Don't care, not watching, Germany are better than England, we'll never win anything, go USA....no let's not, thousands of other threads for you to enjoy so you don't have to be here.

*Sad that I have to do this before every England thread so we don't have the 653473874 discussion on how long people haven't cared about England for. We know you don't, we get it.

Anyway, match thread.

Striker Daniel Sturridge says he is heartbroken after being ruled out of England's opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland on Monday.

The 25-year-old injured his thigh during Friday's training session at St George's Park.

The Football Association confirmed that the Liverpool player will miss next week's game in Basel.

"Heartbroken soul right now," he tweeted. "Nothing worse than being injured."

Sturridge added: "Hopefully be back soon fighting fit for LFC."

An FA spokesman said: "Daniel Sturridge has had a scan and will now return to Liverpool FC for treatment. He will play no part in the forthcoming Switzerland match."

Sturridge, who has scored five goals in 16 international appearances, left Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States early after injuring a hamstring.

He played in the Reds' first three Premier League matches, scoring the winner in the 2-1 opening-day victory over Southampton.

England manager Roy Hodgson will have captain Wayne Rooney, Liverpool's Rickie Lambert and new Arsenal signing Danny Welbeck as his remaining attacking options.

Chelsea central defender Gary Cahill believes the game will be one of England's toughest tests in a qualifying group also featuring Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania and San Marino.

The 28-year-old asked for supporters to show patience as England seek to rebuild following their early World Cup exit and the international retirements of experienced midfielders Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

"Switzerland will be confident, but it is a great opportunity to bounce back from a disappointing summer," he said.

"Turning around our fortunes is not going to happen overnight - everyone knows and expects that."

Real shame but the Rooney/Welbeck partnership works better than the Rooney/Sturridge partnership. Personally, I'd drop Rooney as he looks out of place in a quick, young team. I'd also love to see Lambert given longer. He has no pace but he does have guile and knows how to craft a goal.

I also worry about our defence. Stones is better at centre half than full back and Baines' strength is in attack. As for the two in the middle? Goals waiting to happen. Both too nice - frustrated midfield players who want to play not tackle and battle.

With Rooney being our only real option as striker I'd want to play 4-3-3, but our centre mids are average and there is no depth there best you can do is Wilshere-Henderson-Delph which is just poor.

-----------------Hart

--Stones-Cahill-Jagielka-Baines

------Henderson-Wilshere

----Sterling-Welbeck-Ox

---------------Rooney

Would rather we played 4-4-2 diamond but we dont have anybody that can play as a midfield anchor

Let's just hope that folks don't expect that England should win.

We are playing superior opposition away from home. A draw would be an achievement.

this result isn't that important, such is the ease of qualifying in the new expanded euro 2016. We are in a group where the Swiss are the best team, the 2nd place team go through and the third get a playoff, probably against a pretty weak team. That's if you don't get through automattically as best third place team.

In a time when the appeal of internationals is suffering vs club football, reducing the stakes of each match is not a good idea. Maybe they should have gone the other way and reverted back to 8 teams in the euros. The qualifiers would have been much more fun and all the games in the finals would be top quality.

Surely it gives Roy a chance to experiment with more English players. Guaranteed qualification, play some of the reserves and unknowns.
