Beckham’s red card deserved snidy kick at an opponent.

To me, this a sad indictment of what has happened to our game.

How any football fan could see that incident and say it was worthy of a red card is beyond me.

40 years ago it would probably not have even got you a talking to from the ref.

Think it was nerves! If we had got a second it would have been better, its always nervy af with the one goal imo!

Not really a criticism. I sit in an area where there is very little atmosphere but just a passing observation that I thought it seemed quite flat yesterday.

We should try and emulate Belgium and Croatia and beat a good team. We may stand a chance of winning something then.

Both Belgium and Croatia have proven they are contenders by knocking out other contenders. They both just ran into the eventual winners of the past two world cups - France and Argentina.

The only reason Southgate is still in a job is because we avoided France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal etc. until the semi-finals in 18 and 20.

Had we drawn any of them in the last 16 or 1/4 final he’d not be in the job today.

But we aren't a contender despite reaching the semi final of the World Cup and final of the Euros 😂 You don't half come out with some crap

That’s the thing, we shouldn’t clap along to it! A goal celebration should be completely natural, and not a forced attempt at singing/clapping to a crap tune.

It’s the tune we sing for Conour Hourihane. If it only played when he scored, I wouldn’t mind as much.

You don't have to join in with it.

Celebrate a goal however you like.

Me personally, didn't even realise music was played when we scored.

Also, though the atmosphere was quite flat today.

Belgium and Croatia both lost to the eventual champions.

    England didn’t.

Croatia and Belgium are clearly the teams to try and emulate then.

Although I thought we lost to the eventual champions in the Euros final, my mistake.

Hardly. I only say that about Germany at 2020 because they failed to get out of their world cup 2018 and 2022 group. The past six years Germany have been about as good as England were between 2010-16. Crap.

England would have won Euro 2004 had Rooney not been injured and we beat Portugal on penalties. I’m sure of that.

It’s not even a hate thing. I thought we were the better side against France in 2022. I just want us to beat a big name and prove we are good enough to win a tournament.

Beating the likes of Ukraine, Sweden, Denmark, Senegal and Colombia is all good but it won’t win us tournaments.

Nor did beating Portugal and Brazil, for Croatia and Belgium.

My original post states knockout games. But if you want to go that way, sure we can Argentina and Holland to the wins, and we can also add Portugal (00), France (04), Italy, Uruguay (2014) and Belgium (18) to the list - more defeats than wins.

Belgium and Croatia have beaten Portugal, Brazil and England in the past few years.

The crazy part is that they have more wins against top teams in the past 3 tournaments than England do in the past 15.

When you factor in Iceland, Romania and the Euro 2008 debacle, we’re probably equally likely to lose to a team outside the top 20 as we are beating a fellow top 10 side.

I imagine if England had beaten Portugal and Brazil you would be pointing out that they were the worst Portuguese and Brazilian teams in decades...

  8. 1 hour ago, Bris Vegas said:

    They were group games.

What teams have we beaten in knockout football where you can genuinely call them a genuine contender?

Ecuador, Paraguay, Colombia and Senegal? Come on. England should be beating them if we consider ourselves a contender for the tournament.

On the contrary every time we come up against an Argentina, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Italy, France or Brazil on foreign soil in a knockout game we have lost.

Croatia and Belgium have beaten more ‘contenders’ in the past two tournaments than we have in the past 15. Crazy.

Are group games not competitive games then?

It doesn't matter who we beat, it will never be good enough for the people sat there waiting to say how rubbish we are the moment we lose a game.

Who are the 'contenders' that Croatia and Belgium have beaten? And why is it crazy? They are 2 decent footballing nations.

The Impact of Long-Term Injuries on Football Players

Increased Risk of Re-Injury: Players with a history of injury are significantly more likely to suffer a re-injury of the same type in subsequent seasons. This highlights the need for tailored rehabilitation and prevention programs.

Lengthy Recovery Periods: Re-injuries often require longer recovery periods than initial injuries, particularly for muscle strains (e.g., hamstring, groin, quadriceps).

Injury Burden: The combined impact of injury frequency and severity is crucial for understanding the full effect on teams and player performance.

Age as a Factor: Older players (over 30) are more prone to severe injuries, which can lead to extended absences.

Need for Ongoing Surveillance: While overall injury rates may remain consistent across seasons, specific injury patterns can change, emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring for targeted interventions.

In conclusion, long-term injuries significantly impact football players' performance, increasing their risk of future setbacks and prolonging their return to play. Coaches and medical professionals must work together to optimize rehabilitation, implement prevention strategies, and carefully manage the return-to-play process, taking into account individual player factors like age and injury history.

Anything about it taking a while for strikers to start scoring goals though?

I think some people think that if England beat them, they are not good teams.

On no account should we give England any credit.

At least we are used to that sort of thing on this forum!

When players have been out injured for a long time, they often take a while to start scoring a lot of goals if their going to get to that point at all.

We don't have a lot of time, so will Washington and waghorn just make up the numbers on the pitch without scoring.

Do we have the luxury of waiting for them to start regularly scoring

Just out of interest, is there anything to back this up or is it just a guess?

    Doesn’t really matter. It’s only a friendly.

England need a notch on their belt in a competitive game against a top rival.

A win over Portugal or Spain in the 1/4 final would give everyone the confidence that we can actually win it.

But what we will probably get is an easy run to the semi-final where we play a big boy and we unluckily lose, again, just like we did in 2002, 2004, 2006 with the last golden generation and 2018, 2020 and 2022 with this one.

I’m 35 and the only big scalps we’ve had in my time is Spain 96 (at Wembley) and Germany 2022 (at Wembley and they were at their worst for two decades).

28 years (and 13 major tournaments) of properly watching England football and only 2 wins against big names in knockout football.

Belgium have more than that over the past 4 years.

    Holland 1996

    Argentina 2002

We've also beaten plenty of good South American and African teams in that time but because they aren't Brazil, Germany or Italy, people just assume they can't be good teams.

everybody talks about this england side like its a golden generation but the defence is terrible and thats the most important bit of international football.

kyle walker is englands only defensive player that is top class.

this england side will not be able to get the most out of its attacking players until we have a defence you can leave 1 v 1 at the back like top class players can be left.

arsenal for example are so good going forward at the minute because their defence doesnt need protection. Same with City and Liverpool. No team outside the top 3 have top class defenders

Regardless of the social media inspired pile on, Harry Maguire has hardly ever put a foot wrong in tournament football for England.

Stop using facts to win arguments. None of the threads will be longer than 2 pages.

I asked someone beating the Tomori drum how many times he has actually seen him play.

They said in his last 6 games since he returned from injury and he had been brilliant in all of the matches.

Went away to look how he had done, to find out he has only played in 5 matches since his return.

9 minutes in the first match, 45 in the next 2, 63 in the 4th and 82 in the last game 😂

Mainoo is actually a really good piece to balance the midfield of Rice and Bellingham. He offers the qualities of Southgate stalwarts Henderson and Phillips, but at this stage, he's better and can do more going forward.

Depth behind Kane is a little bit of an issue, as is defence. Watching Lewis Dunk whilst Fikayo Tomori is sat at home is kinda laughable.

Tomori has played 156 minutes in the last 3 months.

Gayle is going to cost us about £40k per game due to injury . Will David Clowes continue to accept losing money year on year ? Our  “Crown Jewels” , or Fab 4 have been dismantled (Knight , Bird, Sibley, Cashin). Apart from Cash who has shown incredible loyalty, and lost his Ireland place. Sibley looks like walking just leaving Cashin. Not much left to sell.

Sibley looks like walking based on?

Let's pretend we don't have the highest first team wage bill in the league then? Our first team players are collectively on more than the entire wage bill for at least 18 clubs in this division.

Last season, we had a turnover of £20.443m and a SCMP of 42.0%, equating to £8.56m. This figure excludes first teamers such as Knight, Cashin, Sibley, Thompson and Rooney, so the true first team wage bill was higher than this (approx £9.5m?). We're expected to pay out similar (if not more) this season.

Based on the latest released accounts, only Charlton (£10.6m in 21/22), Bolton (10.2m in 21/22) and Barnsley (£9.3m in 22/23) had a total wage bill higher than our SCMP figure, and only 2 of them higher than the approximate first team wage bill. This season, Wigan's and Reading's will be lower than these figures, whilst Reading's is anyone's guess. Either way, there won't be more than 5 team with a total wage bill higher than our first team wage bill.

Hardly bargain basement in terms of wages.

Players can usually tend to command a higher wage when there is no transfer fee involved.

As stated, most of our freebies are in the twilight of their careers and, as such, come with added risks attached.

Off the top of my head there is only Nelson who has not had any period on the sideline with injury.

Id suggest that post covid the market is completely different. Most transfers in league 1 happen with no money changing hands at all. The odd transfer fee paid by traditional championship clubs but we’d have our hands snapped off for NML, TB, CN, CE, KW, EA, JC at this level.

The fact that all of them are ageing and have dropped down a level would seem to indicate to me that there was no big queue for their services.

All decent at this level, but all still bargain basement signings by definition.
