I love waggy as a person and was great to see his little purple patch at the start of this season but.. have we ever had a striker that balloons so many chances over the bar? It's at least one a game, it drops to him and you know it's not going wide, or forcing a save you're ducking in row z.

That wasn’t quite my point earlier on. The players can in some respects be excused, unless they stupidly head-but the opposition, they are mostly old or nowadays journeyman, they are third division players. Therefore at times poor football is to be expected.
What I was alluding to is that the most inconsistent team member(s) is the coach and his team. They get picked over tactically by lesser teams too frequently and this goes back to last season. We are not learning lessons. The games that we do well at is when the opposition allows us to play.
When PW and his team use midfield correctly and use the footballing common sense they must have (to have got this far in their careers) then the result is usually acceptable. Dumb sticking to the original plan when it isn’t working, until too late, is what cheeses me off. And that is my point, learn by mistakes, coaching team, please.

I don’t think it’s consistency that fans crave it’s basics like getting the ball down and try and play football even if it doesn’t work. Games like Sat make us look a poor side and we have had far to many off days even if we are 2nd.

I'm neither. I don't expect success. But I don't want turgid football either. I'd rather play well and achieve nothing (as we have for the last 20 years or so, give or take) than play awful and achieve nothing.
The best we can hope for as Derby fans is the odd blip of success, the odd sniff of the premier league every few years, maybe even a few seasons there every now and then. Hope is that key word. It's like only fools and horses, "this time next year lads, we'll be in the prem"....
I'm not sure if it's the manager, the players, league one, administration, some combination of all of the above, but that little flicker of hope in me has gone. I don't see us as a temporarily embarrassed premier league team any more. Games like Saturday have absolutely ground that kind of thinking out of me.
I don't honestly care if we go up or not this season, or if we win lose or draw etc. I just want something to look forward to next time I watch the match, and that's pretty much gone for me at the moment.
    Sorry for the essay.

As I see it, the main issue is that PW has far too many off days, particularly against opposition that we should be beating. It is obvious tactically. Analyse the match, the pitch was narrow but we set with 5 at the back and a midfielder that should’ve been in the middle playing totally out of position. We have a ball playing midfielder on the bench, when it is obvious to see that CH was playing badly and has no strength in defence longer, the two legged jump, the standard procedure to frighten the opposition, being totally ineffective and not scary in the least.
Then we have the so called most able attacking player in this division, sat on the bench.  Instead of subbing early, we bring 5 on after 65.
as I have stated in my other posts it’s the inconsistency, one match good, another like a rabbit in headlights. I don’t expect every ball to go in the net at this level but I do expect us to limit the opposition by understanding their setup and doing things in mitigation and this should be done quite early in the game, thus our chances should go further. However, I simply cannot see it game after game and it is this that really concerns me.
on a weekly basis we see managers of lesser teams making these changes more consistently and effectively and that has been my charge all the time. Lack of obviously learning from mistakes, making a good decision one week and repeating an old one the following week.
I hope that for the last few weeks, we do not have to continue this Groundhog Day. I just want success.

It may be that Warne does try something that works but sadly he then reverts back to type when he forgets why he was getting the players to play that way. We've gone through this cycle of events several times this season.

What if Wildsmith didn't make a worldie save against Bolton, or if their corner that hit the bar was a few inches lower?
If we played better we wouldn't need to rely on one Waghorn chance going in or not.

My original point was in response to someone who mentioned the foundations seeming to disappear at any given moment. I don't disagree with you that we've been very good in numerous games, but to me they just seem to be one-off games. Our good performance wasn't through a longstanding progression of play style being implemented throughout the season. Everything seems incredibly short term, which is why we lose games like yesterday - because there's no foundational play style to fall back on once the one-off game plan fails. Yes we were unlucky yesterday and could've drawn or won on another day, but the performance wasn't good either.

I’m not saying we’ve been bad. His approach is clearly working to a large extent. My point was there’s not distinct style or continuity to how we play which creates unpredictability to our performances. I think the teams we’ve battered have mostly been teams who try and play a distinct way or passing way every game, who don’t try and counter us e.g. Bristol Rovers. Warnes style is reactionary to the opposition.

i really don’t think it’s right to put the reason we lost yesterday all down to luck. Even Warne acknowledged we didn’t play well.
i also think you’re undervaluing the quality of our players. I don’t think any Northampton player would get in our squad except maybe Hoskins.
our difficulty signing players doesn’t affect how the manager sets the team up or his playing philosophy.

Its because there are no foundations. Warne just takes every game as it comes and tries to ground out a result by any means. It is working most of the time, but I'm never truly that shocked whenever we lose a game to anyone. It feels like Warne picks one-off tactics for each opponent and hopes they work, but occasionally they don't or the opponent works them out in-game and we lose. There's no longevity or continuity to anything he's implementing.

Actually I've calmed down a bit, and the players did let themselves down, and the let the club down, and more than that they let the fans down. So apologies, your point accepted.
But it was underpinned by the tactics used today, which were woeful. When it has taken this far into the season to find that we need a third man in midfield, especially if Hourihane has to be in there (I don't remember Richi Sunack passing a law that he must always play unless injured, but it would seem to be the case), only to go with a two today. It crippled us,  especially when he took Adams off, not Hourrihane. And I don't know if you noticed or not, but we were back to the "whack it ide and lob it into the box" methodology that has never worked, and that didn't work today. When as players you know there is a much better way to play, and that you are capable of winning if only we would do it, but are forced into this sort of crapology, is it any wonder they were a bit half-arsed? Yes the players were poor, but they'd had their hamstrings snipped as they walked onto the pitch today.

At this stage of the season Warne should know how to get the best of the team. That doesn't rule out an off-day, but it should rule out off-days of this magnitude, and of this frequency. The biggest issue is that he got us reverting to hoofball, which hasn't worked whenever we've tried it, and strangely enough it didn't work this time, either. So we got him pre-match blathering on about the threat Northampton offered, and that we would have to defend with our lives, and clearly set up in fear of them, when with our comparative league positions and current form they should have been scares witless of us. Hourihane has told us that if they don't play the way Warne tells them then they get dropped. So today's tactics have to be on him. And when, as a bunch of players you know you can do better, and are being forced against what you know will work, is it any wonder that they looked, to be frank, hacked off at times?
And I brought the ref into it because he really was poor. If he had given the free kick for the blatant foul on Wilson, and the card that should have followed, Northampton wouldn't have broken away and scored, then our terrible defending would have mattered, or actually even taken place. So effectively he did cost us the game, but I would never make that claim, because it was our shocking defending that cost us the game. But the ref did nothing about the timewasting even before the goal, or Northampton stealing 5 - 10 yards and more for every throw and free kick, but was actually quite hot on Derby players for their throw-ins. And although Sibley deserved his yellow, maybe if the ref had given the free kick and yellow for the foul on Sibley immediately before he got his revenge, then that yellow card for Sibley wouldn't have happened. Or an offside on CBT after he had run through from the middle of a group of players before the ball was played.
But my main reason for pointing out the ref's abject performance, and why I didn't include the detail i have just given, was to highlight the fact that Derby County' performance was even worse.

I struggle to remember a time I’ve been so incensed by a performance or a result. I feel absolutely conned for finally allowing myself to believe in Derby County in their current form. I felt physically sick at the performance from the first 30 minutes that I just wanted to remove myself from watching the game. It was a disgusting display. A horrible game. I watched the Mansfield and Colchester game before hand and both of them were MILES ahead of what I had to endure in that first half.
Warne fell upon a system with Gayle upfront and it all started to click, when you see the performance today it’s apparent that he knows what he wants to achieve but doesn’t have a plan on how to achieve it. Gayle was an easy solution at the time, I’m sure all things being well that he wouldn’t have signed him. Today really played out all my worst fears - I’m just glad that I was able to monetise us not winning promotion whilst we sat in our best situation. I have absolutely no faith in this team and less so in the manager to find a solution.
I like him as a person, I even find his management and coaching not without merit, but why waste the best part of £10m on keeping an category one academy when you have such a short-sighted approach in the first team. It makes no sense to me. If we fail this season, there is absolutely not way he can remain as the Derby County manager for the next rebuild. Get him gone.

To be in pole position means that YOU HAVE TO BE IN FIRST PLACE. We could be, and should be, given what our players are capable of, but we aren't because of how they are being forced to play. And after nearly looking like we were playing football, and getting the resultant good run, we revert to HOOF IT, And it still doesn't work.

Why are you acting like you had some divine right to win because you passed the ball around more than we did?
If you look at the match stats, the figures don't show such a battering as some Wanderers fans would have us believe...
    Shots: 10-6
    On target 3-3
Total attempts from open play: 4-5
    Total attempts from set-pieces: 6-1
    Possession: 44-56
And this is the really key stat here...
    Goals: 1-0.
Long story short, we have been the side that passes around patiently for many years, don't always have the ruthless edge, and feel aggrieved because another side has out-thought and out-fought us. We haven't finished in the automatic places playing that way, more efficient sides have beaten us to it. You may not have "deserved" to lose it, but you conceded a goal and we didn't, so you lost.
You have already criticised our playing style, fair enough. We'd all like to watch Barcelona in black and white with a Ram on their chest, but that doesn't always get you out of the league.
I'm also not sure how a free header (really well taken by Kane Wilson, by the way) from a corner is "scabby" by the way? Perhaps if you could score more "scabby" goals then you might not have to spend your free-time crying on forums of League One clubs next season.

I tend to see it somewhat differently to the way you do. You say Bolton were the better team - I argue that our defence and goalkeeper were better than your attack and our attack was better than your defence. It matters not how much possession or dominance you had it meant diddly squit. Other than the two shots that were brilliantly saved (I concede that the header seemed harder to miss than score, but it was brilliantly saved) you troubled our goalkeeper very little cans the shots fir both sides were the same. Derby converted one of their 6 goal attempts and Bolton didn’t score any from their 6 attempts
Bolton very rarely got in Derby’s Penalty box and as I’ve said before Derby’s defence is pretty damn good and delt with everything well.
