    So few things from me:
Keeper. I don’t think I can overestimate enough the effect a keeper good or bad has on the defence and then beyond. It’s not just the odd gaffe here or there, you could see today, and with hamer, the lack of communication and confidence. Even having playing centre back at local level I know the competence behind you breeds confidence. I don’t think it’s a coincidence we keep getting caught with runs across our defence either. Comms, comms, comms.
Style. Honestly half a dozen games ago I was loving watching us. Had no qualms with that style at all (or the green shoots of it). We received the ball, already had a ball in mind, passed forward and to feet. The difference a knock of confidence does? Don’t move, don’t turn, look or go forward and then we’re left with the football of the last few games. We’re also trying to make a blueprint with a probably big proportion of players that don’t match the criteria of the idea cocu has, so we’ve had to make do for a season.

Rooney. Certainly had a massive impact. Honestly think he’s run out of steam. Champ is a long season even with a break, he’s generally been great but clearly off the boil last few games. We all know he’s not the long term future, but bird is the case in point for learning from him and progressing. It’s an unfortunate coincidence that we find ourselves a squad that lacks pace as it emphasises it in Rooney. For the most part having the likes of bird et al to do the legwork has got us by though. Just can’t break as quickly as we like. Only sibley, Lawrence and Bogle of the main starters can move forward with any turbo.
Summary. I’m happy with cocu. Gotta give someone time. Haven’t always understood his methods, especially early doors, but I’ve seen enough good performances in the second half to know if we didn’t have a rocky back line and suicidal tendencies, with the right additions of keeper, centre back and pace out on the wings we could do alright next season. Oh and sibley could be better than Will Hughes. Think he’s brilliant.

but I wasn’t bothered about watching football until aged about 9, my best mates dad was team doctor for the day, as the usual one wasn’t available, so took us both along with him. Got to see the behind the scenes, sit in directors box and see us beat Swindon 3-1. Hooked. FYI he only had to stitch up lee mills’ eyebrow.

Not sure it was specifically down to the keeper but I vividly remembering when we drew 0-0 at home to Crewe in 2004 it felt like one of the most one sided games I’d ever seen and couldn’t believe we hadn’t won.

He’s not the long term solution but it was his general calmness last night that helps breed confidence at the back. There was the one flap very late on but felt far more confident with him between the sticks. With Clarke too, the whole defensive unit looked far happier.

Can’t tell if this is trolling or not. Clough’s last season is what finally lost me as a season ticket holder after about 15 years. Just looked up specifics and it was deciding to not bother going to festive fixtures vs Blackpool and the aforementioned scunny games and feeling strangely vindicated as we lost both. I remember even home victories vs leicester being painful as Nigel would shut up shop and invite pressure if we established a lead. The timing of clough going always felt harsh cos he did a good job on a shoe string but he reached his ceiling; he wasn’t tactically astute enough to take this group any further. If not progressing since is seeing the most scintillating football since jim smith under Mac 1, then count me in to not progress again. Credit where credits due, great budget signings and keeping us going, but it’s no coincidence even forest haven’t been desperate enough to take a punt. Rose tinted specs off now please.

Interesting how opinions polarise. I’m a fan of lowe’s but didn’t think he was great tonight. Did some good stuff going forward but looked shaky defensively. Couple of times her tried to burst past the winger but got tackled etc.
Thought Beilik also looked shaky first 10 mins, but once settled was fantastic; we looked a threat once he started pinging passes, and he put in some great challenges even on a yellow.
The composure of him, shinnie and evans second half was a catalyst for being on the front foot. Buchanan was having a very assured game and then scored a lovely finish. Knight really impressed too. Several lost causes he got corners or throws out of through trickery and nous, as well as good general play.
Big fan of sibley too, but echo the sentiments that he just needs to take the edge off a bit and be cleverer about it. Hamer save was astounding, thought it was in, so nice start for him too.
Only slight negatives, aside from the symptoms of changing a full 11, were Bennett and Bird didn’t make much of a mark, aside from one run in the second half. And Marriott looked a bit rusty and stroppy for some reason.
Could have backfired but ended up being a useful exercise. Another small club away in the next round though.

First reaction was “oh!”. Having had time to consider thoughts, I like it. I rarely like or buy shirts as they feel like lazy rehashes/templated with little effort since the great late 90s individual ones. This one feels different and ‘designed’ (until we see everyone else in Umbro in the same anyway lol). Probably in the minority though as most seem happy with the bland each season.

For all the chuntering, I ‘get’ today’s selection. I think had we not conceded before half time it would have gone to plan; keep it level pegging and then utilise a fresh Marriott when they’re flagging and start to turn the screw. Not what we want to watch maybe but there’s some logic. The problem in the main was sitting too deep through fear so when we did get forward, first half especially, there was very little support. Don’t think mason did much wrong, but a thankless task. Weirdly, barring Roos’ mistake I don’t think anyone had a bad game per se, just not enough good performances.
