The decline of so many cities in the UK is heartbreaking to see.
Derby isn't particularly worse than any city of a similar profile or heritage in the UK.

Inspired by the derbys a poo hole thread,
Town planning is in no small part responsible for the state of many of our towns and cities.
Misguided, easily persuaded by promises of investment, trend following, lack of understanding, poor policy decisions etc etc.
Most of it not intended malevolently but short sighted and missing the point a huge amount of the time.
I'm no libertarian let the market decide guide and I actually think planning is needed, I just lament the quality it has had in the UK over the last 60 years.

The word 'elite' gets bandied about all the time in football, and I find it an annoying piece of marketing manager-speak.
When you describe Pep Guardiola, or whoever, as 'elite', it implies he's some kind of wizardly demi-god with secret football ju-ju. It's normally just who the football writes like at any particular time. It also gets used so often that it has become meaningless. I'm sure Marcus Rashford was an 'elite player' not long ago but now he can't get to ten goals.
The other weird phrase is 'in-and-around', as in, "We need to get the ball in-and-around James Collins." You want to get the ball in James Collins. Really? I don't think he'd like that.

Verstappen actually had to work for that, and a so close yet so far race for Lando.
Behind them Leckerc, Piastri and Sainz then the mercedes, Perez was completely anonymous except for a trip to the gravel and a surprisingly competent baby stroll with Yuki picking up another point and I'm sure for home they're all nail shaped in the F1 coffin of his team mate, close but no cigar for Haas getting a point and a horrible day for both Williams and Fernando.

I agree. Not living in Derby and having undertaken many sports events trips with my children and Uni open day visits to UK cities over the last few years, I agree its no worse than lots of others and much better than many. Most cities have good bits and bad bits and city centres generally are in decline matching the reduced income with increased working from home and people moving out during of post covid. Many cities with large soulless shopping centres have suffered in the areas outside of them. Huge mistake building them. Anyway around Derby is just lovely, its so central and the people are wonderful. If its so bad strange so many ex-players stay in the area.

I'd say Derby is no worse than many other small cities.
The Museum of Making is an internationally award-winning museum.
The Pickford collection is world-renowned for being hosted in the city.
Our engineering past and present is awe-inspiring.
Festivals like Format and Feste attract thousands to the city.
Derbion, not to everyone's tastes, but is an excellent shopping destination.
Darley, Markeaton and Allestree parks all in walking distance, Peaks and Dales a short drive.
Yes, St Peters St had a drug problem, but has improved from 5-10yrs ago. It still needs help, lots of empty shops but no different to any other city.
Huge numbers of homes are being built in the city centre, the Goods Yard is being rebuilt, a new performance venue is imminent, as is a new business school.
It's not perfect, but efforts are being made to improve it and if you are linked to the city, it would be better served by not running it down all the time.
Articles like the Which one are lazy, reductive and usually written by sneering journalists who haven't left London in a decade. So yes, Derby isn't as easy to get around as the capital, and it doesn't have the same level of cultural facilities, perhaps investment in our region that matches what other regions receive would help.
And it's a far better place than Stoke at the very least!

Possibly a valid point about attracting players . But I would say Derbyshire is a lot better county than Derby is a city.

Dal deserved that bit of luck. Match drawn thanks to huge effects from Dal and Chappell. Good to see some bottle, but we've got big problems with that top order.

"Never seriously looked like flirting with relegation" lower mid table solid enough ish mediocrity is fine by me for the season ahead.
Be nice if we can get a few good results along the way, or even a decent cup run.

To add to @RadioactiveWaste's post, xG is the most misunderstood stat in football. It's incredibly valuable for assessing performances over a certain period of time, and discovering it early is partly why Brighton's owner is so rich.
