Gregory has scored 37 goals in 180 championships games and Rooney said we need more goals to stay up , do you think he's a solid solution to get us more goals and stay up? Not saying he can't do a job but he's not a solid goalscorer that's going to get us goals

He has Championship experience, and he’s a good option off the bench or in case Kazim-Richards gets injured. I think it’s a better option than playing the kids up top who would just get bullied.

I actually think Roberts is the signing to hopefully get us goals/create chances. The striker is purely back-up.

Was just an example mate , qpr signed johansen from Fulham,  Brentford has signed Winson Reid on loan , we signed lee Green toad Gregory ?‍♂️

Fair enough, but we hadn’t even paid our players a couple of weeks ago, we’re not in a position to be making big name signings and unlikely to be able to attract them either. We need solid, short term solutions to get us through the rest of this season.
The club can’t afford to be paying big loan fees, or large percentages of big salaries if there’s still a chance we’ll be relegated.
Lee Gregory’s a solid back up in this league,  we need some grafters to get us through the next 4/5 months.

I was just expecting England's all time top goalscorer and Manchester United's to have some better players in mind than bloody Lee Gregory and George edmundson,  players that can't get in the Stoke and rangers squad,  feel like he could of been more cheeky and used his contacts niasse is a free agent , he'll even sturridge might be up for it we got rooney to join didn't we? Plenty of players on the fringes of prem teams that we could of gone for on loans just like Gregory ?‍♂️ what do you think of the transfer deals so far mate?

He might be Wayne Rooney, England and United’s record scorer, but we’re still Derby County, skint and 18th in the Championship.

Sturridge would be great, but when did he last play, and is he actually what we need right now?

Personally, I'd take the first team exposure and have a choice of offers incoming and a very hefty signing on fee in twelve months if I thought I was good enough.  That will get you further quicker and more than make up for loss of earnings on a first pro contract at the moment.   Sure he would get his wages as well.  I was working on the understanding all the youngsters were still getting paid on time.

That's me now.  At 16 might have been different when someone offered me a nice signing on fee.

His story reminds me a lot of the Newcastle and Coventry forward Mick Quinn.  In his book he actually turned down Liverpool to come here as Derby were league champions twice in 4 years and Liverpool were 1 title in ten years.  Didn't work out as he was homesick and got lead astray regarding the booze being away from home as a young kid .

As I noted the other day, much of this is to do with the football food chain that's always there, however a million quid for a player who's supposedly this promising who's had such a thorough and expensive team of academy coaches, nutritionist's, club doctors etc over a  number of years not to mention future value is ridiculous.

No one likes to feel they've rear ended and that's happened with this lad and Delap in just over twelve months.  If they fulfil there potential that's a huge amount of cash down the swanny.  If there was a minimum fee of 1 million but a guaranteed 25% sell on and 50% of any loan fee up to the age of 23 that would be fairer and people wouldn't be so irate.

I think it's hard to compare what I'd do now as opposed to what a 16 year old would do, because I'd certainly be lot less cautious at 16, and most kids believe they're indestructible and aren't as aware of life's potential pitfalls. I don't doubt those advising him are maybe seeing pound signs either, but even then it's exciting - life's short and if he doesn't take this chance he may be left questioning 'what if' later down the line. Of course that also applies if it doesn't work out at Liverpool, but it's all a gamble and I hope for him it works out.

I was being a bit facetious regarding him being paid here, he wouldn't be a high earner even after signing a pro contract and I doubt (hope) Derby's struggles won't last for too much longer.

I do understand the frustration when/if you see players like Delap and Gordon succeed elsewhere, especially if they're sold for tens of millions of pounds later down the line - it's always galling when young talent is poached by these huge clubs, but as you say it's part of the football food chain and their scouting network is designed to recruit them when they're at an age where they don't have to pay huge sums.

I try to take to comfort from the fact that our academy players are attracting such interest though, because there's not been many times in the club's recent history where our young players (or any former players) have gone on to bigger and better things. And it's all part of the business model, sell the best talent to the big clubs, and build a good team with the rest whose value will increase later on. It certainly beats splooshing £4/5m on average 28 year olds then letting them go on a free.

Fingers crossed for the sell on fees though!

    This boy and his advisors

Okay, I'll rephrase. Sounds a bit bitter when talking about a 16 year old boy... and his advisors. Hoping he 'enjoys 7-8 years of under 23 football and a move to Shrewsbury' sounds like it's aimed less at his advisors, however.

Besides, I think his advice is sound:

"Do you wanna sign a professional contract here at Derby, or for a team called Liverpool FC in a rather wet corner of England?"

"Hmmm... not sure. How good are the offers?"

"Well, Liverpool will pay you more, but you might have to do a few years in the U18s and U23s. Whereas Derby are far more likely to give you first team experience within the next year. However, getting paid isn't actually guaranteed..."

I’m 100% with you @DanS1992 loyalty is something that cannot be learned. This boy and his advisors clearly have none for DCFC, F.R.O and I hope you enjoy Under 23s football for the next 7-8 years prior to you mr move to Shrewsbury or somewhere else.

Sounds a bit bitter when talking about a 16 year old kid. Loyalty in football only extends to fans being loyal to their club and that's it. We're happy enough to bin players off if they're not playing well, and even happier to shout abuse at them in the stands and on social media.

He's been given a chance to join the champions of England, who do actually try to bring youth through - Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Rhys Williams, Neco Williams etc. I'd think differently if he was joining Chelsea's young perpetual loanees.

The best players don't get to where they are by going for the safer option, he has to believe he's good enough to break into the side in a few years time. If he does, then who knows what he's capable of achieving, maybe he'll be a Sterling or a Sancho. And if he doesn't, he knows there's plenty of clubs willing to sign ex-Liverpool youth players... like us for example! Seems like it's a risk worth taking.

I thought he was class, a joy to watch. Let's not forget he won POTY in a season when we had Mason Mount and Harry Wilson - that's no small achievement.

I think part of that was his passion, not to downplay his footballing ability, but on top of being a very good footballer I've never seen a loan player care so much. That's even considering a player like Leon Osman who pretty much single handedly saved us from relegation. If I hadn't had known otherwise I would've thought Tomori was playing for his boyhood club when he was with us!

  8. I doubt he's ready for the physicality of the Championship at such a young age, it doesn't matter how talented he is, it's a tough league for anyone so young.

It would be great to see him move to Liverpool and become the player he has the potential to be knowing our academy shaped him. It's testament to our academy that we're receiving seven figure sums for teenagers who haven't even started a first team game yet.
As much as I'd love to see him become the best player in the country at Derby, that just isn't ever going to happen unless we were also up there with the likes of Liverpool. Who could begrudge the kid a move like that anyway?

But they did hire Solskjaer whose record wasn't good at all. I could see it happening if they sacked someone mid season and then hired Rooney as Caretaker until the end of the season to see how he'd do, like they did with Solskjaer.

Yeah, probably if they sacked him mid-season and there wasn't any available high-profile managers. If they have more of a choice I couldn't see them hiring anyone who'd require as much time as Solskjaer has, I don't think a club the size of United can afford to go for "young and unproven" more than once a decade.

Probably a mistake in the long run for him to go o Chelsea. He should have built his reputation more before joining them to have a better chance of getting another club after the inevitable Chelsea sacking. He's probably going to have to go back to the Championship.

I can see the exact thing happening with Rooney and Man United.

I don't think the same will happen with Rooney, at least not as soon as it did with Lampard. It'd take a very similar set of circumstances - United being under an embargo, having a season without Champions League - for it to happen. Can't see United's next appointment being anything other than an established manager, so Rooney would at least have to have gotten Derby promoted first, and I'll take that.

I say this knowing that I've been wrong about almost every prediction I've ever made regarding our managers.

His interview was brilliant. I’m so sick of the cliches, it makes watching any player interview (or, frankly, pundit interview but that’s another issue) pointless because they show zero charisma and just spout bullocks. Kazim showed them the way

Absolutely, you can't fault his attitude. Watching the Wycombe and Coventry games he was always talking and encouraging everyone around him and that's exactly what we need. This squad isn't lacking in quality, not to the extent where we should be bottom of the table, but when you're in a rut you need grafters, leaders and players with heart who are up for the fight, and CKR is exactly that kind of player. And, in fairness, he isn't exactly lacking in quality himself.
