Every Derby manager since Cocu first gave him a run in the first team had Bird down as one of the first names on the team sheet. One of those former managers is now trying to sign him in the division above us.

I hope he is successful in buying him from us. Bird flatters to deceive, he should have controlled games with his ability at this level but went missing in alot of games. Im not saying Bird doesnt have ability, he does, he just doesnt do enough with it. My opinion is that Smith is a much better player and know hows to play the role better too, unfortunately he was needed at right back instead.

Where was Smith when Knight was played at RWB?

Realistically it seems we now have a squad of about 16. Which means we will still need around 7 signings.

I have discounted Knight as he is likely leaving. Thompson and Oduroh likely to be out on loan.

We seem to fit a 3-4-3 Formation as it stands;

Wildsmith (Vickers)

Cashin
Nelson
Forsyth (Rooney)

Ward
Hourihane
Bird (Smith)
Elder

Barkhuizen (Sibley)
Collins
Mendez-Laing

Loach not in the matchday squad.

Most signings will likely be squad players. The big positions for me for nailed on starters would likely be a couple of strikers/ attacking players now.

My starting 11 would be the same (presuming Knight is off). If he stays then obviously he comes into the team.

Without Knight and Bielik...

Wildsmith

Smith Nelson Cashin Elder

Ward Bird Hourihane

NML Sibley

Collins

Fancy that slightly more than 3 at the back with what we have.

Highlights that we are currently pretty lopsided. I'd say we need an orthodox right back, another centre half, cover left back, left winger, CAM, and 2 x strikers. A lot of wheeling and dealing left to do in the next month or so, especially as we are needing 3-4 of pretty much best in our league attackers to look like a real automatic promotion contender.

Why put a RWB at CM and a CM at RB?

The CAM or number 10 role is going to be very important and Didzy would’ve been great as needs someone with guile vision and ability to score goals

I know we need a striker or two but the cam/10 role is probably the role where we need to spend a bit of money

I do not see Sibley as the answer in that role against the better sides

Because Smith did a really solid job at right back and still seems our best option there IMO.

Ward seems more of a right midfielder/winger and I wanted a back 4. Also a trio of Smith, Bird & H lack a bit of forward support for me.

All a work in progress anyway, this time next month maybe neither will be in.

Ward started 27 at RB/RWB (half of those in a back 4) and 12 at RW. Your formation put him at CM. Smith did a steady job at RB but has zero end product. He's fine cover in a back 4, but should never be used instead of a player whose primary position is RB 😅

                 Collins     Barkz

I'd have Barkz, Collins, Knight and NML rotating as well to throw their centre backs into disarray. If we go 1 down we go to rush goalie

Tactical genius over here

So what do we need to get to where we were last season (as a minimum)?

I’m feeling forgetful in my old age, so what have we lost (or didn’t have) that we haven’t replaced yet?

A right back - we didn’t have one

A midfielder (replacing White and/or Knight)

Wingers?

is that it? And everything else is gravy?

Given the fact we still have a full loan allowance, and that window doesn’t get busy until later on, we’re in a good place.

One more right wingback/full back. One, preferably two strikers. A big aggressive midfield destroyer in the DPFG mould. Squad complete?

Wildsmith (Vickers)

Ward (Smith)

Nelson, Bradley, Cashin (Rooney, Foz)

Elder (Barks, Sibley)

Bird, Hourihane (Smith)

NML, Barks (Sibley)

Washington (Collins)

Assuming 3421, with Thompson out on loan and Knight leaving.

We're not ready yet, but we're getting there.
