Southgate signs new England contract

Successful whilst not being overly entertaining will always divide fans so not surprised by the reaction.

He was being highly criticised pre San Marino for playing 3 at the back, although I do have some sympathy in that he has minimal time with the squad, probably looking to build familiarity with systems that will be used against stronger countries.

10-0 kinda squashed the pre match negativity, but I think in general some just want to see him let the players off the leash a little more.

How many semis and finals did they reach?

On paper he is successful.

But there is no hiding the fact that we stumbled across an incredibly easy run to both the semi final and the final of the last two tournaments.

There is still a major question mark every time we play a top team. Losing to Belgium twice, Italy and Croatia.

Opinion.

We drew with Italy

Beat Germany

Best Croatia the last time we played them.i anyone seriously saying he is worse than Capello McClaren Keegan Allerdyce Taylor Hodgson

We have some decent forwards but no good defenders or quality in CM and an over emotional T Rex armed keeper.

This is no golden generation we just have some decent dribbles and a decent CF

When we chase the game against better teams it exposes our fragile defence.

Don’t get me wrong, you can only beat what’s put in front of you. But if any one of Brazil, Italy, Belgium or France had lost to the likes of Colombia, Sweden or Denmark in a knockout game you would call it a shock result.

The only decent teams England have played over the past three years in major tournament football are Belgium and Italy and we lost both. Croatia in 2018 were another who had the luck of the draw on their side.

Germany since 2018 were shot. Beating them at Wembley wasn’t all that impressive considering Macedonia beat them away in the same year while they failed to get out of their World Cup group in 2018.

I do agree that our starting XI isn’t as good as say Brazil, France, Belgium and Italy. We have a surplus of quality right-backs and wide forwards but the spine of the team doesn’t match.

I don’t think we could do that much better though regarding a new manager. All the best coaches manage at club level, and I don’t think England will go down the foreign route again after Capello. I also doubt an English PL manager would trade a PL job for England. Only an out of work manager and the most renowned right now is probably Frank Lampard.

I think Southgate has shown that international football management is a specialism. There’s no guarantee that a Klopp or a Guardiola would be a good international manager. You need to be able to bring people together from different teams, with different abilities. You only have a short time to train then and get then to gel, so you have to think of a simple system without tinkering too much. You have to groom people for international football from an early age through the youth teams, and build a close knit group.

I hadn’t really considered any of this before Southgate. You can see a mile away that this teams strength is it’s team spirit. Southgate might not be the best tactician in the world, he could be crap if he tried managing in the premier league again. But he might just be the perfect international manager.

so after each tournament we don't win we should sack the manager?

I always thought we should change manager after every tournament regardless of how far we get. 2 year contracts, one tournament per manager. We'd get some quality Premier league managers wanting their turn between jobs. Everyone could have a go then and it'd be all or nothing for them.
