Penalty Duties

Didn't I hear Cocu say something like, "Penalty taking is a striker's job, so I gave Waghorn the option of taking them."

Surely, penalty taking is a specialised skill, and the player(s) with the optimum skill-set do not need to be strikers?

Maybe I misunderstood what Cocu said, but I think penalty taking is too important to be allocated on the basis of a player's position.

I don't doubt that Waghorn will improve, he's not been the designated taker since he arrived so it'll probably just take a little bit of time to get used to things.

I'd fully expect Rooney to take over in January.

If we want to take Waghorn off in the interim - should he miss more or whatever - I wouldn't mind Dowell being given the responsibility. I recall him being Forest's taker when on loan there and apparently has a decent technique.

What do I know, though?

With penalties I always wonder how such skilful players miss them.

Just choose a side and aim for the side netting, doesn’t need to be hit too hard if it’s hitting that side netting.

Practice it to the point where every penalty in training is hitting the side netting. Get that muscle memory in place.

I always remember this pen Waggy took for us against southampton in the FA Cup shootout last season, smashed it in the top corner, clearly got good technique and i'm not sure there's anyone else in the squad who'd be ahead of him taking them for me.

Waggy has always looked to me like. A smash it rather than place it type of striker, so it puzzles me why he’s trying to place it on penalties. Today was a good example. Smash it down the middle and it’s 2-0. His side foot placement looks very shaky

The 2nd penalty was a good peno. The keeper guessed right went early and was also off his line slightly and made a good save. Id have him off the penalties though after today just because it will be in his head now. Put lawrence on them imo

Sorry, I can’t agree. The second penalty was very poor. Low, not near the corner and with no power. Perfect place for a keeper to save all he has to do is go the right way, his first technically was worse but credit to him for going to his left as the keeper would know to his right is his preferred way.

It wasn't a great penalty.

Never saw charlie george, alan hinton or dean saunders scuff it down the middle.

But it was slightly better than nathan ellington.

Nathan Ellington took brilliant penalties.

Wazzer wonna miss many.

Wish i could agree with that. I think he'll miss plenty.

The fact that there isn't an obvious penalty taker just highlights a lack of technical quality.

Duh - just realised you mean rooney. I was referring to wagger.

It wasn't awful but a good penalty is unstoppable and that clearly wasn't.

Having said that the goalie was a good fit and a half off his line - so there is that.

Personally I don't have much confidence in Waghorn.

In reference to @TommyPowel and hitting it straight down the middle.

The freakonomics guys did research on it and the success rate is easily the highest.

They concluded more penalty takers didn't adopt the route because:

a) if keepers know that's your m.o. they're ready.

b) you look like an idiot if the keeper never moves and still saves it.

They concluded reason b was the bigger reason.
