Avengers Endgame

Genuine question, from someone who hasn't seen any of these films. The idea of catching up now by watching 21 or 22 films, seems daunting.

If you were to recommend say, 6 or 7, to see, excluding the current one at the cinema, which would they be? And in which order please.

Tough question as Infinity Wars/Endgame bring all the characters together from the previous movies.

As a bare minimum you need to watch Avengers, Avengers Age of Ultron, Captain America Civil War, Infinity Wars and Endgame but you would benefit from Guardians of the Galaxy 1&2, Ant Man, Doctor Strange, Winter Soldier and the Iron Man Movies and probably others.

TBH I'd just watch them all, even the poorer ones are worth a watch and the more you put in before Endgame the better the pay off.

Okay, for what its worth here is my ranking;

Top Tier

Endgame, Infinity Wars, Ragnorok, Guardian 1, Civil War

Upper Middle Tier

Age of Ultron, Avengers Assemble, Iron Man, Iron Man 3, Winter Soldier, Spiderman

Lower Middle Tier

Doc Strange, Ant Man 1&2, Guardians 2, Iron Man 2

Bottom Tier

Cap America First Avenger, Thor 1&2, Hulk, Black Panther, Captain Marvel

I tried to keep 5 or 6 movies per tier.  I personally found the middle tiers were the hardest to decide with the top and bottom tiers being far easier.  Feel free to disagree!

That's great. Thanks for taking the time.

I'll make a start this weekend. But given how things are at the moment, it's going to take a long time to catch up.

Captain America 1, Iron Man 1, Thor 1, Avengers Assemble, Winter Soldier, Guardians 1 and 2, Age of Ultron, Civil War, Doctor Strange, Thor Ragnarok, Infinity War is the bare minimum you would need in that order. You could probably take Winter Soldier, guardians 2 and Thor Ragnarok out as well (I just like these movies) and get it down to 9. If you really want to cut it further than that lose Captain America and Thor 1  to get it to 7, but it really isn't enough of the movies.

That introduces you to the main  characters of Captain America, Thor, Guardians, Doctor Strange and Iron Man and takes you through the Avengers story line. Really you need to watch all of them, but that is the minimum I could get it down to and even then it doesn't include all the infinity stone stories.

And whichever you decide to watch, I would suggest watching them in the order they came out, not in chronological order.

That way you get bits of the story revealed just like anyone who watched them in real time.

Pisses me off when people say you should watch captain America first, cos it’s chronologically first.

Anyway, for what it’s worth, this would be my list, in order.

1) Iron Man

2) Thor

3) Captain America: The First Avenger

4) Avengers Assemble

5) Thor: The Dark World - important cos it introduces an infinity stone, but they handily give you a recap in Endgame, so not vital

6) Guardians of the Galaxy

7) Avengers: Age of Ultron

8) Ant-man

9) Captain America: Civil War

10) Doctor Strange - I’m going for a theme of at least seeing the first of each characters movies so you’re properly introduced to that character. But you could sacrifice this one, as you’re kind of introduced to him through the eyes of other characters in other films.

11) Spider-Man: Homecoming - Could also sacrifice this one, as he’s first introduced in an earlier film. But definitely worth a watch.

12) Thor: Ragnarok

13) Black Panther - again, just to get a better idea of the character, but he is introduced earlier, so you could skip this.

14) Avengers: Infinity War

15) Captain Marvel

16) Avengers: Endgame

Okay, I’ve only sacrificed 6 in their  but you could possibly sacrifice another 4 if you’re really pushed for time.

We managed to show our daughter roughly one a week for the past 6 months to catch her up in time to take her to the cinema to see Captain Marvel.

3) Captain America: The First Avenger

Actually the first stone is introduced in this movie, you could say it's the one that gets the most 'press' (it also appears in, post credits, Thor, briefly in Cap Marvel, focus point in Avengers 1, also Ragnarok, Infinity War and End Game (Ovs).

This link is A MASSIVE SPOILER, only click if you have seen End Game, or don't care, if you don't care you won't click anyway.

Although let it be known that the only movie out of the entire list that I didn't like was Thor 2 - and even that movie had decent periods. But splitting them up into groups of 5 or 6 this is how I'd do it.

I think top 3 (Ragnorok, Infinity Wars, Endgame) and bottom 3 (Thor 1&2 and Hulk) would be on most peoples lists, the rest are interchangeable based on personal taste - I enjoyed the humour in Ant Man for example but thought the villains and plot lines were weak in Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

As you say though, even the weakest of the movies are watchable and have their moments.

Hants Jnr wants me to go with him to local Vue to see this (aka he wants his old man to stump up for a trip for him) but Im being made to do homework by watching a selection of the earlier ones on DVD to help me understand the plot.

So far, we;re through Guardians of the Galaxy, Infinity Wars, Doctor Strange.

I've also seen Black Panther and Spiderman but apparently they're not needed for Endgame.

And its Ant Man this evening.

To think its come to this.............? (having realised what I have just written about)

I think basically every movie is useful. There are movies with separated plots, but there are SO many lines of dialogue and smaller plot points in End Game that call back to all the random movies - it's kinda of crazy.
Like Spiderman's main narrative isn't relevant but the relationship it develops between Peter and Tony is absolutely relevant. The Infinity War scenes would be weird if you didn't know how they became so close ?

If you have to avoid some, I'm struggling to think of anything relevant happening or being said in Thor 2, or.... Hulk. And that's it ?

Isn't the Reality stone introduced in Thor 2? Spiderman, Black Panther and Ant man and the Wasp could be skipped. I can't remember Iron Man 3 having much importance but it's been a while since i watched it.

The Reality Stone merely being introduced isn't all that relevant, in my opinion. Without going into too much detail to not put spoil Endgame in a discussion specifically for someone who hasn't seen it, all of the plot related to the Reality Stone in Dark World is completely re-explained in End Game (probably because they are aware it's the least seen/remembered of the movies).

Black Panther I agree with. Iron Man 3 you have a case for, and if it has to be missed, could be - but it still adds value to End Game if you see it.  But the others I don't agree.

The ending of Ant Man and the Wasp is incredibly important to End Game. Spiderman (he's already seen anyway) develops one of the most important relationships in the MCU.

I don't know what @HantsRam situation is, if he HAS to skip a whole bunch of the movies due to time constraints then you're right - he should skip those you've mentioned - but if it's purely up to choice then I'd only skip Thor 2, Hulk and - at a push (if I really wasn't that into the MCU) - Black Panther (which would be a shame as its a good movie in its own right, unlike Thor 2 and Hulk) and Iron Man 3.

Sounds like I need to increase my homework workload..........

Hants Jnr is just completing his first year college diploma exams - last one next week and so to encourage a final push towards Biology glory I offered up a trip to Endgame (plus a Nandos) for next weekend. Safe in the knowledge that he will be hard at his revision cards whilst I am in the Cleveland Bay with Tigz the Labrador on Sunday watching the game?

Thanks for the helpful input guys......despite my slightly curmudgeonly grumbling, Ive enjoyed the Marvel films I've seen so far. And i forgot that I have seen Thor Ragnarok as well. So I'm getting through them  I do have a bit of an issue in that i am away on business for 2 nights next week tho.........and I only know how to find the porn channels on hotel TVs...??

You're an intelligent human - I'm sure you could find some way of watching more MCU movies at a Hotel ?

Just remember if you end up watching anything on a portable device, don't make it any of the really good visual movies. Make it like... Captain America the first Avenger or something ?

Don't want to put you off but someone has worked out that if you include the upcoming Spiderman movie (due this summer) it works out at 3000 minutes of movie you need to work your way through ?

Ant man ticked off last night and a double header planned for late afternoon/early evening.....takes this weeks total to 5 and about 9 overall.

Probably be ant man vs wasp, plus captain America.

I'll be going down fighting ?

Captain America Civil War sets the background for where some the characters are in Infinity Wars

Ant Man & Wasp leads right into Infinity Wars (watch the post credits scene)

Ragnorok leads right into Infinity Wars (watch the post credits scene)

Infinity Wars leads into Endgame

Endgame

So long as you have an understanding of the other characters in the MCU these are the essential films and imo all excellent films (although Ant Man can be higher or lower on some peoples lists depending on what they find funny!)

Keep fighting!!!

Already have ragnarok and infinity wars under my belt, so hopefully I'm getting the back stories filled in ?

Be there or thereabouts by next weekend I reckon.

Finally dared open this having watched it today. I really enjoyed it. It had everything, the brilliant Marvel humour, some tear jerking moments, brilliant story line, twist and turns. Just brilliant.
