Have you asked Harry where he was aiming for? Might he not have been looking at the wall and where the goalie was and planning his shot accordingly?

Could be worth asking professional footballers if they practice free kicks or if they hope the wind takes it into the top corner.

Any footballer who strikes a knuckleball and later says he was aiming for the ball to end up in exactly the spot he was hoping for is an outright liar.

If you could dictate where the ball ends up using the knuckleball technique, then far more players would use it when spraying 50 yard passes from one side of the pitch to the other as it’s clearly the fastest way to do it.

I wonder why Beckham, for instance, never did. Might it be because the end product is totally unreliable?

What the hell has anything you’ve written go to do with the direction of the ball on a knuckleball freekick?

Hey man don't start on me! I've just been to my brothers house for his stupid birthday crap curry and I'm 6 beers and a bottle of red wine in. I can't even remember what I wrote bit what I do know, and this is a fact, is that I don't even know what knuckleball means. So back off douchebag.

But he did aim for the goal, surely that’s the point. He specifically isn’t aiming for a postage stamp size spot in the corner, just an area of the goal where the knuckleball’s unpredictable swerve will make sure it stays on target. The swerve means it doesn’t have to be in the top corner, as it will bamboozle the keeper. But in order to score relatively consistently, he needs to be sure of his technique that the swerve won’t take it off target.

Im not misunderstanding you, I get where you’re coming from. But you’re saying it’s luck that it went in, and it could have just as easily gone into row z, that’s the nature of the knuckleball shot. But if he gets it I’m statistically more than you’d expect from just taking por shots, then there’s more than just luck at play.

Take your lottery ticket example. Harry could improve his chances over me by buying more tickets, but it would still be luck. But say there’s a million possibilities, and Harry buys one ticket. Once every million spins he should win, statistically. No more, no less. But if the machine is spun 5 million times, and he consistently wins more than 1 in a million, so by the end of the spinning he’s won 10 or 15 times, then there is more at play than just luck. Those sort of returns would invite a good kicking outside the casino.

I would suggest his all round play needs to be more consistent before I give him too many plaudits.  He had a great 30 minutes against Brentford that we need to see more off.  Regarding knuckleball freekicks which I'd never heard of till a couple of weeks ago, Le Tissier was doing it better than anyone I've seen 30 years ago, it just didn't have a fancy name then -so there  .

Here's what Harry was thinking!

Of course it’s luck if it generates a random result. That is the very definition of luck.

That’s like saying it’s not lucky to win the lottery because you bought the ticket.

So is skill needed by the player to produce this result?    Keep digging.

I know I p you off from time to time (always??? ? )  but I can see from your posts/reactions you've got a tiny bit of understanding why I get so riled?

Oh how i wish I had or your laid back personality. Or at least owned the forum so I could set the rules ?

Don’t think we’ve even seen the best of him yet.

He’s a frightening talent already but I think he’ll keep improving as the season goes on. Just getting more canny and consistent with the experience of a full season.

Young player of the year’s going to end up being a bit of a scrap, there’s about 4/5 in the squad who’d have won in previous years already

Boggle has a great shot well saved too. If that had gone in...
