Its fine to have this discussion now despite the blind-faithers. Another question that affects our confidence for next year ( whatever division we are in ) is how to explain the regular large variation in the quality of our performances within a few games. The Stevenage performance itself, our FA cup exit and the recent performance at Northampton and a few others show how inconsistent our performances can be. Naive at best. There are many examples in our clubs history and of other clubs where a managerial change ( without change in players) leads to an upturn or drop in performance and matches won. The quality of the players may place a ceiling on performance but there examples where a new managers have drastically raised the performance level of what was previously viewed as an average squad of players.

No stats you are likely to come up with can offer a descriptor of a 'proper good football match' , and in any case why do we need such stats given we are supporters not coaches and the stats don't add anything useful. Perhaps we need a separate "stats" section of the forum where folk can swap statistics and talk the same language without polluting the match threads. This is not down to "sampling variability" . It is the system not conforming to the model, not due to chance, but due to imperfections in the model being used.

We have retreated to the failings of the Exeter and Charlton games. Down to the manager and his obsession with Bradley and an over-defensive back 3 formation ( which can be attacking as in our recent wins). In hindsight the loss of Gayle seems so significant. Warne says in his interview that we didn't get the wing backs forward enough -- whose fault is that?

We'd have been better dispensing with a back 3 and not just cos Bradley has been awful

You have to be watching to see this - maybe not often enough for you but he has goals and assists this season. The argument is not whether he can do it but other aspects of his game - like ability to effectively tackle and speed. Your post is just ignorant when presented unqualified as it is.

There's a fatal fallacy with making this comparison. In your example the two students performances are independent of each other. In a football match one side's play directly affects the performance of the other team. The reason Bolton didn't score yesterday has much to do with our defending - when Wildsmith makes a superb save its part of OUR good performance. You state in another post that Wildsmith made "two worldies" as though that is just luck rather than good performance. Those saves were not just "rub of the green". But much more importantly, your pedantic posts have nothing to do with the joy of watching football.
