Our best and worst months - the facts

There's been a lot of talk about February being the month our season collapses each year so being the statto that I am, have done some research.

Based on points per league game (PPG) for every season since 2013/14, this is how it stands.

Our best month over that period has been December (PL 30 PTS 71 PPG 2.37)

Our worst month over that period has been May (PL 5 PTS 3 PPG 0.60) but as that's such a small sample size, the one next worst month is March (PL 21 PTS 25 PPG 1.19)

This is the complete list ranked best to worst over the past 5 seasons and then the same by individual season.

Would be nice to see these numbers compared over a longer period of the clubs history, not just 13/14 as it would highlight the last 5 seasons to be somewhat of a golden age in racking up the points for a long long time.

When you look at our most successful managers we have had in terms of win percentage, ignoring the caretaker managers that have seen us through a game or two, no surprise to see who the top 2 are.

1. Steve McClaren MKI - 54.26%
2. Gary Rowett 47.73%
3. Brian Clough 46.71%
4. Cecil Potter 45.26%
5. Billy Davies 44.93%
6. Steve McClaren MKII 44.83%
7. Dave Mackay 44.3%
8. George Jobey 43.4%
9. Roy McFarland 43.01%
10. Paul Clement 42.42%

GR's comment 'it's utter b******s' in this morning's interview actually related to his views on football websites telling him he 'must drop this 28 year old', or 'the 5 changes GR must make', rather than the wheels falling off in February.

In the interview GR also commented that prior to it he looked up Derby's form and he rattled these off 'in the last 8 home games we've won 4, drawn 4, lost none' 'in the last 8 away games we've won 4, drawn 3, lost 1'. Of course he's used December and January's results in these stats to improve them. Another way of looking at it is in the last 6 games we've won 1, drawn 4 and lost 1, but that doesn't sound as good!

I'm sure GR and the club aren't stupid and must be analysing these sorts of stats as to why points per game falls off from December. Fatigue, physical and/or psychological factors, January transfer windows v what other clubs do in them, supporters not clapping enough etc etc all come into play as has been debated on this forum and elsewhere. The figures do show an element of 'Groundhog Day' each of the last few seasons. The question is is the club able to define what the issues are and address them.

Interesting post, @admira. Couldn't resist seeing if there is a trend so I transferred the data to a spreadsheet as below, and made a chart of it. The fall off in the 2nd half of the season is evident. Perhaps the club should sell season tickets for just Oct to Dec.

Can you put trend lines on this - Or just the trend lines

Thought Arthur Cox may have been in there ?

Chart with just trend lines is below. 13/14 season looks the best with slight upward trend. Other 3 apart from this season show downward trend as season goes on. I'm not sure what it's done with no data for last 3 months of this season to predict the flattish line to May.

2 simple fixes for next season

  1. i buy a half season ticket
  2. Derby buy a new team each January

sorted.

Bugger,I'll finally be in a position at the end of the year with work/shift commitments changing, to get a half season ticket...but it will be the second half!

I'm on a hiding to nothing there then?
