'Panic Buy'

What actually classes as a panic buy? Is it down to the fee involved? If so what kind of fee would be classed as a panic buy? Or is it down to us never being linked until last minute? Or just something else?

If we got Jota for 6m would it be a panic buy or only if we paid 8m?

Is there such a thing as panic selling as well? Selling players under value juat to reduce squad size?

If its a player we desparately need like a quick mobile and strong tackling midfielder a la ngolo kante for example then providing we dont pay well over the odds, then it would be a shrewd piece of business even if we had to shell out a vydra style fee

Blowing 8 or 9 mill on another wide player might be a panic buy..

When you have hours left of the transfer window, miss out on all your main targets and pay over the odds in desperation on a player you hear on the grapevine that has become available without doing little research into will he fit into the side not on and off the pitch.

Bradley Johnson could fall into this category as would many deadline day signings, although I'm not sure at the time many would have raised an eyebrow at the price, only now are questions being asked.

Not sure it's that wrong to panic buy established players as long as you don't pay well over the odds, any signing is a risk, you can scout them all season, do lots of homework on a player that can still flop.

Worth remembering the reasons behind Johnson and Butterfield signing was the long term injuries to Bryson and Hughes, had we not signed them your left with just Hendrick and Thorne.

Panic? Probably but then you don't really prepare to lose 2 CM's for that length of time in the first month of the season, had it not been these 2 they would still fall under the panic buy category.

Matej Vydra - the ultimate panic buy.

8 million on a player who had done sod all in recent seasons  (WBA, Udinese, Reading), clearly struggles for goals without  a Troy Deeney partnership.

Absolute pants down by Watford for him and Anya, atleast Blackman was signed off the back of a decent run of form.

Most players being mentioned are ones we'd have been chuffed about at the time but just haven't worked out.

Johnson and Vydra were exciting signings at the time and don't think many argued too much with the fees paid.

We literally only found out about BJ's availability the night before we signed him and his skillset was abundtly juxtaposed to the style of football we wanted.

Somebody really did deserve the sack for that signing.

Wouldn't class Butterfield as a panic buy like previous posters because we had been working on that deal all summer. We were going to sign him regardless of Hughes' and Bryson's injuries. I'd class players like Johnson, Anya and Vydra as panic buys as we bought them and somewhat overspent as a reaction to the poor starts in the season.
