Portimonense Sporting Clube is a Portuguese football team based in Portimão. Founded on 14 August 1914, the club is one of the few professional clubs in the Algarveregion, and currently plays in the LigaPro. Situated in Algarve's second largest city, its stadium, the Estádio Municipal de Portimão, has a capacity of 9,544 spectators after undergoing renovation in early 2011. The club never won any major honours, but participated in the Primeira Liga for several seasons.

Portimonense's zenith was in the 1980s, a decade in which the club only played its football in the top division, also competing in the UEFA Cup in 1985–86. They reached the semifinals of the Taça de Portugal three times, in 1983, 1987, and 1988. Portimonense was a regular presence in the Portuguese first division, even finishing fifth in 1984–85 – highlights included 0–0 home draws against Benfica and Sporting Lisbon – which led to participation in the UEFA Cup in the 1985–86 season.

Anyone got any idea on the formation they played?

Some variation on 3-5-2 / 5-3-2 used in the U21 and main squad games... And Mel talks a lot about having the same 'way of playing' throughout the club as a whole... So young players know how they're expected to play as they step up...

I don't buy that 'a formation = a way of playing' but would be interesting to see if it's being implemented at every level...

Pearson may be finding away of closing the back door and expecting us to win 1-0 whilst looking for better players to get us goals if we are not making many chances.

It would be sad if he did... Since this squad has proven to be at it's strongest when let loose for rampage forward... And at it's most fragile when asked to sit deep, defend and feed off scraps...

News Flash - DCFC about to sign Rampage as a forward on advice from cheron85.

News Flash update - Concensus of opinion among the DCFC fans is that Rampage should stick to what he is best at, being a legend in his own living room, (setee section).

News Flash breaking news - Rampage turns down lucrative offer at DCFC amidst jubilation from said fans and half fans.

All is well that ends well.

That pass from the number 15 for the third goal... thing of beauty

Think he's one of the new scholars but I'm unsure. Will keep my eye on press releases and let you know when we get a name to go with the face.

Do we need a new title to this thread? Apparently the under 21s will now be under 23s playing in a newly formed 'Pemier League 2' according to our website.

That probably explains why we have given some players we might consider being a bit old for the 21s a new deal, such as Santos.

Derby To Open Newly-Launched Premier League 2 Campaign Against Manchester City

Wed 20 Jul 2016 18:00

Derby County will kick start their maiden Division 1 campaign by hosting Manchester City at St George’s Park in the newly reformatted Premier League 2.

An Under 21 outfit last season, the age gap has been upped to Under 23 from the start of the 2016/17 term.

Premier League 2 is a new competition with a greater focus on the level of play in terms of technicality, physicality and intensity to bring players as close to first-team experience as possible.

The rules regarding over-age players, however, will remain the same, where each team can field a goalkeeper over the age limit and up to three “over-age” outfield players in every match.

The 2016/17 season will see the Rams, crowned Division 2 Champions last term, take on City, who finished fourth last season on Monday 15 August, kick-off: 7pm.

Two away fixtures follow after that with trips to Everton (Monday 22 August) and Tottenham Hotspur (Tuesday 30 August) with the latter being played at White Hart Lane.

Derby’s first meeting with last season’s Division 1 Champions Manchester United comes early on too with the Rams set for a trip to Old Trafford to face the Red Devils on Monday 19 September (kick-off, 7pm).

Last campaign’s runners-up, Sunderland, follow a month later on Sunday 16 October, kick-off: 12pm, with a trip to Chelsea following eight days later on Monday 24 October.

Derby’s final fixture of 2016 will see them face Tottenham Hotspur at the iPro Stadium on Monday 12 December, before they return in 2017 to face their North-London rivals Arsenal on Friday 6 January.

The Rams will finish their season, as they did last year, at the iPro Stadium by hosting Chelsea on Friday 5 May.

Darren Wassall’s side are also due to face Southampton, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton at the club’s main stadium.

* Please note that these initial fixtures are subject to change.

In Division 1, the team who finish first are crowned Champions.

The bottom two teams in Division 1 get relegated to Division 2.

In Division 2, the league winners get automatic promotion to Division 1. There is no relegation from Division 2.

Teams ranked second, third, fourth and fifth in Division 2 go into a promotion play-off.

The side finishing second play the fifth-placed team at home and third host fourth in the semi-finals, both at the clubs’ main stadiums. The final takes place at the home ground of the team who finished higher in the league.

All play-off matches are one-off ties, decided by extra-time, then penalties if the match is level after extra time.

Didn't see the thing about Premier League 2. For me with the existence of the league and the euro cup I don't think I'd want to be in the Football League Trophy

As has been pointed out, Santos' contract extension suddenly makes sense. And the release of Calero is now all the more damning of his ability.

I think the whole thing makes sense in respect of clubs who want to keep their young players longer so they become more of the finished article before stepping up to the first team. We have acknowledged on here that all players develop at different paces.

European competition gives them an added incentive to stick around rather than moving on to lower leagues just to get that coveted first team place.
