George Thorne

Classy of the Ipswich player to apologise, bit of a wreckless tackle but you can see in the picture of Thorne his eyes are fixed on the ball. Was good to see a few of the Ipswich players urging the lazy medics to hurry up too.

It's a blow for us and particularly for George.

But it'll only be a terminal blow if we allow it to be.

We're more than capable of winning the play offs with the squad we have at our disposal.

Hughes CDM for me, with Butters bought in.

A reliable source.

Not saying that you're lying but talking from past experience George won't have been told himself the duration of the injury yet especially with a leg break. Bones recover at a different rate for different people. He will have a more accurate indication in the next few weeks once he has seen specialists so they can assess the rate of recovery from the time of the brake to the date of that specific appointment but he won't be given an accurate date on the day it happened

I won't quote the whole post @Jourdan, whilst I agree he was rushed back last season,to his possible detriment, I think we're in a much better position now than we were then in regards to the backroom medical staff, and indeed the facilities to enable recovery from such injuries.

For instance, Mel offered to employ a top sports doc as part of the backroom staff, but Mac didn't see the need!

That level of expertise is now in place, hopefully we've reaped the benefit already with Will and Bryson's return, and we'll get Thorne back better than ever.

That was the main point of my post, Revel.

I haven't seen the incident and the specifics haven't been confirmed yet. Like Sage, eddie and philmycock pointed out, it could be a broken leg and an impact injury, one which could have been suffered by anyone - a player with 500 career games and no serious injuries, an academy player making his debut or the kitman playing in a testimonial game - and one which no-one at the club could have anticipated.

But I'm looking at the bigger picture - his injury record over his entire career, not just this one injury. Had he not got injured today, I would still hold the same belief. We need to learn some lessons. We need to manage his recovery better and the recoveries of other players and put their needs before our own. Give them all of the time they need to recover in every case, but especially if they are proven to be susceptible to injuries.

Now this injury may have nothing to do with susceptibility or injury-proneness but the general point I'm making is that we need to show more responsibility and think of the player's future, not just our short-term gain. We have to be firm and put the judgement of medical professionals ahead of the eagerness of both player and club to see the player on the pitch as soon as possible.

We saw it with Barker during the Clough days. He played all of the time for 'the good of the team' but to his own detriment as he was never fully fit, played through pain and suffered some serious injuries in the process of playing. Were the serious ones a result of this mismanagement? It's impossible to say. But could we say the club could have done more to protect Barker and many other players from further injuries, minor or otherwise? I think so.

I really hope we don't go down that route with Thorne and we think about the long-term.

I haven't seen the challenge on video and a lot of us are jumping to conclusions very quickly. 99% of challenges could be made to look bad with a single image. Try challenging without studs showing etc

Remember in the first half at one point ref blew a foul against Derby with the ball coming out of the Ipswich area, GT was about to smash it and kicked their player in the leg. If this had broken their guys leg would we be calling GT a dirty McCarthy type player? No we won't.

So I'll reserve final judgement to see if we ever see the clip. During the game I thought I saw GT try to control the ball and then shoot. I don't know if the defender was the one who blocked it, if the defenders studs went into GT's legs or GT followed through with his shin onto the defender.

From where I was in the North Stand, it just looked like a normal block tackle - the sort of thing that defenders do every match they play - and George was just desperately unlucky that his shin made contact with the Ipswich player's foot in the act of shooting.

My worry is vs Wednesday we were so open down the middle of the pitch due to not having Thorne. I pray to god Hughes isn't played CDM, completely wasted... Rather go 442 or play Johnno there

Excellent point N_S_S. Effect on Will Hughes and where to play him is a big deal.

Accident looking for an occasion today. We know that Thorne is fragile. The players are either confident or they are not confident. Hull will be expecting to beat us and

Eh?

Where on earth have you pulled that figure from? 40%

It is not 0%, it is not 100% .It is not a minor factor, it is a big factor but it is not insurmountable. I rated the chances of getting an important player from the first team injured against ipswich at about 40-60. I therefore, using apparent foresight, counselled against taking that obvious but pointless risk. I was right but I am very disappointed by what has happened, particularly for the team but also for George who could have been watching from the stands.I have been watching football for 60 years and this is my considered opinion.

Gutted for George but don't agree with the doom merchants.

Next week is a new day and a new game. It will be won by the team that wants it the most and who works the hardest.

We have a £4m player waiting in the wings - one who is due a goal.

We can't simultaneously hope to get into the Premier League and yet doubt our ability to beat Hull.

Believe!

Just one of those things.

If Martin hadn't got himself booked, it might have been Thorne who was replaced - but that's just as much hindsight as your statement.

I suggested it for two weeks on here, before the game. An unnecessary injury to a key player in the Ipswich game was in my opinion something that could easily have been avoided by resting some key players for that game. It presumably would not have happened against Ipswich if he had not played against them. If he had got injured against Hull, then that is the way that it is.
