    There's one clear winner

Wildsmith was dropped because of his form in his last couple of games.  You'd have very different results if you compared the two keepers stats from their last two league games.

Thought Vickers would probably just come in for one game to give Wildsmith a kick up the backside.  Remind him his standards can't drop. Haven't seen anything from Vickers to suggest he is a better bet than Joe so think it would be harsh if Vickers keeps his place.

  2. A lot of posters on here seem to expect us to have a squad filled with excellent League One players.  The likes of Bradley, Ward and Elder whose careers indicate they are clearly decent L1 standard aren't good enough for them.

Warne did alude to having to let players go before getting the players he wants in. Warne said

“to get these (his top targets) in, you might have to let two of them (current players) go”

Also talked about having to know the players going out are definitely going before getting trying to finalise deals. So could be all deals done in the last week of the window.

Please don't bring balance and common sense into the debate.  It's all about knee-jerk reactions, ignoring the whole picture and just focussing on the things that can allow us to be miserable and wallow in self-pity.

10 + players of which literally 2 of them Nelson and Nyambe are regular starters so not sure the summer was exactly a massive improvement as you suggest

we have needed players at the top end as PW puts it yet sign up Waggy and Washington who although arent bad players still come across as make do signings rather than must have signings I’m not being negative iM just pointing out that the window gets a lot of fans excited but in reality we can’t get the real game changing type of players that hopefully are on our list of targets over the line which is worrying if we can’t compete with the likes of Charlton

I'll admit that few of the incomings have made a huge impact on the starting 11.  Less than hoped for sure.  A few have had injury issues though so it's a bit early to be writing them off in my opinion.  The squad is definitely improved, more options, more depth and our league position reflects that. If we tail off like we did last year and miss out on top 6 I will be agreeing with you that we're no better but I honestly can't see that happening.

I think the reason some get a bit disappointed when the window is open is the same reason I do

We don’t want to spend silly money and go against financial restraints blahdy blah but it’s the fact that PW explains how difficult it is to get anyone and all the stars have to line up and the wind has to be blowing in the right direction etc etc when others seem to just get on with it and get players in eg Charlton signing Coventry

it seems to follow a similar path each time saying we are near players have been shown round blah blah and we all think this is Derby and we should be able to sign a couple of half decent first team players for league 1 and then in the last few days PW says we tried but everything can just change and it’s so difficult to get the right players in yet also say it’s not difficult to get players to play for a club like ours ??

Then hey presto …last knockings of the window  cue the Springett and White signings ….lol ….we’ve had all season to identify the players that would make a difference yet something stops it from happening and I don’t think it’s all about finances

You say "similar path each time" but then only reference last January (which everyone would admit was disappointing) conveniently overlooking the summer window just gone where we brought in 10+ players who have clearly improved us.  It's easy to be disappointed when you twist everything into the most negative outlook possible.

He’s clearly a clever guy and I get the being honest shtick that he does, but when it backfires like it has done about 6 times since he came in it gets a bit tiring.

He could just say that conversations have been held but there’s plenty of talks to be had before anything gets signed.

If we end up replicating last January, do you think we’ll get promotion this season?

He pretty much says this every time he is asked about transfers.  Goes out of his way to say there are no guarantees etc.

The bold bit is the root of it really.  He's been coached for years to play Guardiola-style football, which I think is exactly why Rosenior signed him.  But Warne-style football is about as far away from that as it's possible to be.  There may well be a player in there, but I suspect we won't ever see it here.

Warne has made it pretty clear that he doesn't rate the lad.  Doesn't appear that Rochdale do either so not sure why people think it would be a good idea to throw him into our 1st team.

Got our Reading tickets.  We’re in the corner, in block GU1.  Haven’t been before so hope it’s a decent view.

I'm in there too.  Bit annoyed as see they have just started to sell more tickets for behind the goal where I would have much rather been.

  9. So many people happy to write off players after no more than a handful of games and in some cases a half season that has been disrupted by injury and no significant run in the team.  Sort of mentality that saw Salah and DeBruyne moved on from Chelsea cos they weren't fantastic from day one.

Same people that saw JJ or Fornah do one good thing in their first 20 minutes of football for us and said they were going to rip it up in this league for us.  🙄

Hate to say it but chaos seems to reign defensively whenever Bradley plays. We were told heading etc was his strength and with his height it should be…. But he’s useless in the air.

Yes…. Cue the ‘it’s early yet- he may come good’ comments- but to me he looks like a disastrous acquisition and a massive waste of money (wages-wise)..

We need to find a league one defender that never makes any mistakes.  It's as simple as that.  🙄

Warne mentioned post match on sky that Fleetwood are one of the top sides for attacking stats from set pieces, which partly drove the decision to go “big”, which I’m assuming is code for playing Bradley as part of a back 3. Ultimately it’s not cost us, wonder if it’ll be back to a 4 for the Burton game 🤔

Would imagine it will because we just don't look as comfortable as a 3.

Very strong call to drop Wildsmith.

That back three absolutely TERRIFIES me - it’s the same one that was absolutely calamitous at the start of the season. Glad to see John-Jules start (hopefully this means we’re more convinced by his fitness now), but I have a very bad feeling about this game.

Should've stuck with the back 4 that let in 5 on the last two games.  Not in the slightest bit calamitous for the Boro winner either.  🙄

Always a laugh when this thread gets resurrected after a bad result. I think the funniest thing is that it usually gets resurrected by a pro-Warne poster getting angry at what they imagine someone else might be thinking

"Grrr... I bet this thread will be swarming with non-believers any moment"

*hits submit reply to bump to the top of the forum*

Indeed.  By people who think they are better fans for not being critical of the manager or who seem to take personal offence over said criticism.  Strange behaviour for adults either way.

On the goal keeping distribution front…. I don’t know if it’s my position in the East Stand (Upper, next to the away fans) but Wildsmith seems always to kick long when there is a pass on to one of the defenders. Are the attackers closer to the defender than it looks or do people think Wildsmith doesn’t trust himself and would rather hoof it safe even though, more often than not, it leads to a turnover of possession

I think it's just the desire to boot the ball as far away from his goal as possible.  Never understand why we do this.  Just play it to the defenders, play it round the back, keep possession and if we have to go back to Wildsmith to launch it at least we have run the clock down a little.  It's the same result but has taken a few more seconds off the clock.

Thought without the ability to bring Bradley on yesterday we might not sit back so much and invite Boro onto us but it made no difference and cost us points yet again.

Perhaps I’ll have to rewatch the whole game as, after one live viewing, your comments feel a bit harsh to me. I don’t recall feeling any nervousness or concern about his game tonight. It could be any dodgy moments were perhaps down to a change in formation (more exposed at the back?) as time was running out and we had to commit even more to attack?

I get a bit bored with all the Bradley comments.  My missus says "watch out" every time he comes on FFS.  We're in League One.  He made a mistake in his first game for us and made a nervous start after that.  Did people expect us to sign players that never make mistakes?  We're incredibly lucky to have the back four that we do, at least two of them are too good for this level. But even they make mistakes.  We conceded two goals in the first 15 minutes yesterday.  Were none of our defenders at fault at all for either goal?  It's always Bradley that's on the receiving end of the negativity though.  I don't see it.  He hasn't done anything wrong for some time now.

Yeah that's how I see him and I just don't think we have the forwards that can take advantage of his crosses anyway.   Collins is probably our best bet but he's hardly dominant in the air or one to get across the face of defenders.   Then people will say he doesn't get enough service but a striker can make average balls into the box look like good ones or vice versa.

We scored from one of Wards crosses on Thursday.
