    Pinched from the Exeter forum.
I'm normally annoyed when we lose or get hammered but not today. Derby are a level above. They'll do really well next year in the championship. We just cannot compete. I assume players like Hourihane will be on more £ a week than our entire squad put together.

Exeter form team in the league recently beaten Barnsley and Posh. Not only beaten, but swept aside. This is a statement performance. How can you not get behind Warne and the team after this. Yes we need to follow up with a win against Stevenage but most of the people I was debating with on Sunday didn’t think we had that performance in us. We are right in this!!
Some excellent performances, adams is an excellent signing, max was outstanding tonight, Mendez ruthless and Collo a war horse who got kicked from pillar to post but led the line brilliantly. CBT clearly not right yet and struggling with niggles but if the affect of having him means Barkhuizen performs like that then that’s a win also. That 45 from Barks was the best I’ve seen him play. Brilliant!!
The doubters even need to give Warne the credit he deserves tonight.

    Saturday 10th February 2024. 3pm kick off.
Fingers crossed NML’s foot injury isn’t too serious and he’s able to play a part at the weekend. No midweek game is a big plus so he is able to fit in some more recovery time.
Do we stick with the 3-5-2? Probably the best we looked in the system so far this season. Can’t help but feel Adams inclusive made a huge difference to the way it worked.
Let’s go make it 3 wins out of 3 shall we?

A player who did well for Forest Green in their League Two winning side, who has moved to the Championship but not really got a look in?
The last one like that is alright, so why not.

I really hope this happens. This is what I called for in the midfield thread a few days ago.
We have good attacking options but they aren't free to get forward and do their thing because no one is doing the nasty stuff to allow them to stop looking over their shoulders.
    Love the idea of:
    Adams (DM)
    Thompson/Fornah (box to box engine)
Bird/Hourihane/Sibley (number 10 or attacking mid)
I've just got a feeling someone like Adams, in the mold of Eustace, will help knit it all together and we'll start seeing the benefits of our talented squad.

I think Adams & Fornah/Thompson in the 2, then Bird/Hourihane in the 10 would be a decent combo

The facts are we signed an aging striker on a free from a struggling Championship club. Unless a miracle happened, ala McGoldrick, which you can never rely on, he was always going to be a squad filler as we look to sign a young high potential player.
So far this season, he's had 14 league appearances of which 6 starts, averaging 35 minutes per appearance. He's got 3 goals and 2 assists. We have 20 games left, let's say he's fit enough for half of them, scores another couple of goals, maybe another couple assists. He could achieve 9-10 goal contributions in 25ish games. For a squad filler, on a free transfer, that's decent enough business for me.
Is it the future? No. Does it do a adequate enough job for us now as a squad/bench player? Yes for me.

You're probably right, however I like to remember footballers are human beings and don't like to insult them unnecessarily.
This isn't 1972 where we're the best club in the country, this is 2023 where we're in the 3rd tier after exiting admin and aren't financially loaded. Any player that comes here and genuinely grafts has my respect, gone are the days of giving out huge contracts with players like Anya simply here to pick up a wage.
Washington, from what i've seen, tries hard and does his best. I'm not going to sit here and write flippant comments that completely dismiss him when he's had a respectable career in the game and is currently contributing to a squad trying to get us promoted. Just don't think he's done anything here to warrant being called 'nothing' or 'mediocre'...

I have literally signed back into my account for the first time in 5 years or so to tell you this is wrong, thus emphasizing how ridiculous the rest of this post is.

St Ives town are based in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, which you might have realised had you not been so desperate to slag him off.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Ives_Town_F.C.

His last season in League 1 was 2021/22 season, so a couple of seasons ago where he scored 11 in 35 which is respectable enough (Collins scored 11 in 42 last season) for someone we signed on a free.

If he was a goal machine he would either be playing at a higher level or command a fee that we are currently unable to afford. Besides goals, he has a good work rate and has contributed to the teams success (when fit) in other ways that Opta and x.G don't/can't quantify.

A decent chunk of our fan base (and I guess football fans in general) have such a reductive view on attacking players' attributes which rarely extends past their ability to score or create goals. This is rightly the best metric when comparing the best players in the world, which I will concede Washington is not, but he brings other qualities to the team which are of value and contribute to our success - along with chipping in with the odd goal here and there.
So far this season he has registered 3 goals and 2 assists in 13 league games (497 mins) which equates roughly to a goal contribution every 100 minutes, which I will gladly accept for someone we signed for nothing.

Maybe just don't resort to referring to him using insulting terms such as 'nothing player'... Nobody is asking you to be happy with who we sign, and you're entitled to criticism, but flippant, reductionist phrases like that are always going to wind people up. He's had a decent career, primarily playing in the second tier of English football. However you dress it up, he isn't a ''nothing player''; use your words better.

Any player who is a top player at League 1 level will be frustrating. You could even say the same for many quality players in the Championship.
Some of our best attacking players over recent years - Wilson, Mount, Russell, Ward, Ince, Martin, Vydra, Lawrence - fall into that bracket for various reasons.
Mendez-Laing and Wilson have days when they are incredibly frustrating too and nothing comes off, let’s not forget, but you do notice when they are in the team and when they are not.
Many looked back at January last season and said why didn’t we make more of an effort to strengthen the squad and avoid burnout. Many looked at the summer and said why weren’t we more proactive in nailing down our targets.
It seems to me the club are trying to learn lessons. CBT is clearly a long term target and someone we have been tracking for 6 months at the very least, so it’s not a snap judgement either.
A good League 1 player that is in demand would ordinarily cost anywhere from £1 million to as much as £5 million. In exceptional cases, like a really prolific forward, even more.
£500,000 may seem a lot based on the restrictions we have become accustomed to, but in real terms, it’s small fry if you want to get a player who is performing well at this level and has the potential to scale up into the Championship.

Taking his name out of it I’d be interested to hear we were looking at signing a 20 year old midfielder, who’s a youth international that came through United’s academy and has been playing league one football this season with 4 goals and 1 assist across 28 appearances in all competitions.
It fits the profile of who I’d want us to be signing, younger players with potential for their ability on the pitch as well as their re-sale value to the club.

Spot on mate. You won't find a consistent winger in league one and if you find one in the championship they are likely to get snapped up.
We are a league one side. Who honestly do people honestly expect us to sign? I can't fathom it.
These are the same people who didn't want us to sign Jordan "currently the top scorer in league one" Rhodes.
We're a league one side, with a league one budget. Some of our fans need to realise that.
