Well my 5 year old fancied an afternoon with her grandma so my 3 year old went to her first game!! Can’t believe she sat through it and seemed to enjoy it!! She’s been banging on at me to take her but at 3 thought she was way too young (especially as she terrorised the cinema when we went to see sing 2!)  It helped the people in front weren’t there today so she could kick the seat in front to her hearts content.

As for the game. The conditions played a huge part. Don’t think I’ve ever been to a game as hot as that. Early in second half it was clear they had no more to give. Players like Bird Sibley and Barkhuizen who were prominent first half struggled second. Sibley was invisible second half the Smith substitution was to regain control of midfield it didn’t work as the momentum had shifted.  Although Barnsley were on top they scored a lucky goal which is what gave them the extra push to put us under the cosh.
Overall we got away with one but one thing today demonstrated was at this level we have firepower and we’re clinical.

On paper our first three games are pretty tough and we’ve come through them with 6 points out of 9 with a newly patched together squad with less preseason than everyone else. Not bad if you ask me.
Cashin is outstanding (I said he would be in league one team of the year and he’s confirming it) and Collins will score very soon and will bang in several this season.

Sibley barely touched the ball second half. Bringing Smith on made sense, to freshen it up.
The idea was to control the game.
But in the space of five minutes, we missed a glorious chance for 3-0 and then Barnsley scored from nothing.
We lost control after that. But Smith used his experience well to win free kicks and slow the game down.
That’s how it will be in this league.
I’m sure we will batter a few teams by three or four at some stage, but games like today was just getting over the line and Smith helped us get there.

Fans are with the players and staff and that will continue as it’s clear we’ve recruited some good characters who are grafters. If they work hard and are brave they will continue to have full backing.
The feel good factor and optimism is amazing. I don’t think it is putting unnecessary pressure on the team, do not underestimate the team Rosenior is putting together here. I’d argue it’s better than last season and better than league one as it should be, we are not a league one club our history proves that so we should be expecting to fight for promotion as a minimum.
Should we get promoted we will have real momentum with young players further improving, enough IMO to be competitive in the championship next season should we get up. But the fans (providing we don’t get relegated) will view the championship as a shot to nothing and promotion would be an aspiration not an expectation. We’ll have the red dogs and their £100m+ squad to contend with for a start.

My first game of the season last night as been at weddings the past two weekends. Player observations:
Wildsmith - Like him but still getting used to being sweeper keeper taking a few too many risks
    Odouroh - Not ready yet
Cashin - made some daft errors over playing but recovered every time. Building on last season, stand by my prediction he’ll be one of best CBs in the league this season
Stearman - worst player on the pitch, badly needed minutes looked very rusty so hopefully will stand him in good stead.
Foz - Typical foz, know what you’re going to get solid option
Smith - Got better as game went on. Calm head. Excellent option at this level.
Tommo - struggled until Barkhuizen and Mendez Laing came on, moved inside alongside Smith (his rightful position) and finished game well, did play important role in first goal
Sibley - Excellent. Has to start Saturday
Dobbin - first half excellent struggled when they moved Bowery to CB. Like him causes problems and works hard.
    Knight - Everywhere as normal
Rooney - What a debut, a serious serious talent who could be as good as Bielik. Possibly better.

Subs changed the game, Barky and Mendez-Laing class at this level, everyone is behind Collins willing him to score. He will score he’s doing all the right things.
Overall - we didn’t deserve to win last night but we made 7 changes and used it as a test for the kids and they passed with flying colours and ground out a win helped by the big guns. We could barely put an 11 out 4-5 weeks ago. Massive progress.
All the players signed seem to be the right characters. They have talent but they are all grafters. That’s vital.
Its time to get very very excited about the potential of this squad. Once it clicks we will be on fire and have the potential not only to be promoted this season but be competitive in the championship next season.
I honestly don’t know how you fit everyone in the team in midfield and attack. Good players will be left out. We desperately need a right back.

I will be adding more to this over the next few days but today we were very proud to unveil the lasting memory to Reg, it is now situated in the reception at pride park, we rethought the logic, the bronze bust will be placed there and a replica will also be installed at Field Land FC in Alvaston.
we are really proud to have got this over the line, planning permission and Covid 19 delayed matters but it is now in situ and for all to see.

We’ve gone from spending millions and expecting to get promotion to the prem with each year adding more and more pressure/ expectation and this sometimes created a toxic atmosphere. For us to now have a bunch of lads who love the club and being here and who you know will put 110% in every minute which is also reflected in our fans who are known generally as some of the best in England these past couple of seasons. The feel good factor right now is amazing

Yeah, the feel good factor has returned UR. The performances seem to be mirroring that.
It just feels positively different. Everything seems to be screaming  we're in an upward cycle.
Based on not much, but the instinct is strong.
I think after long periods of negativity, you just feel the football gods favouring us at the moment.

After paddling without direction for a fair while, I just get the vibe that we've turned a corner. I didn't get that vibe under any of MM's managerial appointees.
This time it just feels different. Healthier, with purpose...

There's something going on at our club that gives me the Arthur Cox, Jim Smith vibe.
I can't put my finger on it, but something instinctive in me tells me we're entering a new exciting chapter.
The planets seem to be aligning.
Something in my water ( and hopefully it's not cystitis) tells me we're at the beginning of something big, and I've not felt this way for many a year.
I feel something brewing. Don't ask me how, I just feel it....
I think we're at the outset of a huge uplift for our club.

^ Post of the season so far. It's so good, I could have written it. I entirely agree especially with "its time to get very very excited about the potential of this squad. Once it clicks we will be on fire and have the potential not only to be promoted this season but be competitive in the championship next season."
I thought that after the Charlton game. Once we get some oil into the bowels of the machine it will fire like my 2L air-cooled VW engine in the back of my camper van and we will metaphorically pull uphill in 4th gear without a millisecond's hesitation. We just need to be patient, sit back and await the feast. I'll know it's coming when I see Collins thump one in from 18 yards and rip! the net from it's rigging. I thnik it may happen on Saturday v Barnsley although the heat may subdue football that day...but it's coming.
