2nd WC final lost on pens but as much as i hated losing to Italy in 2006, I am OK with is one. It's gone to Messi and that's good enough for me.
Mind you, my blood pressure might need a bit longer to recover, what a game that was.

Thanks for the advice david is much appreciated ? You are right the PhD doesn't grant me some of those things. I'm hoping my experience of teaching not just for the uni but outside organisations can help with convincing ppl i am reliable, punctual, and can get along well with others in a work environment. But yes, if i had not done any work and merely focused on the thesis this would obviously be a barrier especially given the solitary nature of PhD study.

I do remember Joe. I believe he now works in an enrollment office at the Uni of Derby as we sometimes chat on twitter, if that is the same joe i am thinking of at least.

I'll definitely look at career advice ? I do think university can be helpful, whether it was a wise choice made doing a PhD i guess time will tell. I made the decision to do my PhD right after my dad and grandad passed away, I basically finished my MA dissertation quickly post funeral and whacked in proposals within 2 months of that so it was perhaps a rushed decision to say the least.  It's been a tough 4 years (even if some aspects I have loved) and there is a large part of me that thinks i should have gotten onto the employment ladder as soon as i left my MA. My gf studies architecture at Edinburgh so she's very well placed for a good career at least so perhaps where a course specifically directs you into a field of work it is perhaps at its strongest for direction. Subjects such as politics or history leave you twisting in the wind somewhat post graduation.

An amazing final to end what was actually a very good tournament in a footballing sense.  Obviously, the finals should never have been awarded to Qatar, but on the pitch this tournament well worth watching.
Messi now joins Maradona as the greatest player I've ever seen.  6 crucial games in a row where he has been decisive and pure quality all round. I'm delighted for him, he fully deserves this World Cup triumph and the Player of the Tournament award (his second).  Honourable mentions too for Alvarez, Fernandez, Romero and the whole Argentinian team spirit in general.  Scaloni has done a remarkable job, back to back Copa and World Cups is some achievement.
Argentina were the best team in the  tournament, but their capacity to collapse towards the end really helped make their games a memorable watch.

The Final has two of the best if not the best players of the tournament , Messi v Griezmann contesting it , both players are crucial to their teams chances , either one deserves to be on the winning side

Football my friend, I' ll be the 1st to admit we (France) did not deserve it. England at the very least deserve to go to extra time and  i was dreading this as our bench was nowhere near as good as yours. Our play off final vs QPR, the WC final lost  vs Italy I could go on with the games I can look back on  and think we did not deserve this, but the bottom line line is at the top level you got to take the very few chances you get. Especially a pen in the last minutes of a game. I agree with you with  the players coming through England will be rightly considered contenders for future tournaments as opposed to a nation that matters but isn't expected to be in contention for titles.
Onto the semis France A vs France B, what could possibly go wrong?

I can confirm that in a tiny remote corner of rural SW France, one Englishman was so enraged last night, he threw his baguette at the telly, and our (French) soon-to-be-daughter-in-law is refusing to wipe the mayonnaise of the screen, so he'll have to do it himself!  She's a hard one, that girl!  ??
