I gave him a lift back to Leeds (where he used to live) from Derby after a match  just after he started reporting on Derby. Wasn’t arrogant at all. He’s a nice bloke, enthusiastic and has immersed himself in the club. Doesn’t take himself too seriously and strikes a good balance between analysis of tactics, players and the different personalities he comes across at our football club

Although I'm still processing my grief concerning the loss of the 'Abu Derby County' thread, I'm encouraged by the 'El DerbyCo' thread thus far.
We've had far right Spanish politics, unsubstantiated Twitter rumours, smiling Indonesian businessmen, a debate on Ryan Conway's reliability and mention of Jeremy Corbyn.
The old thread was often completely random and off-topic, and this one is keeping on the tradition. Love it!

I'm not sure Ryan Conway has particularly deep contacts (at the moment), but, he's also young in his career. He obviously is good at talking to the people in and around the club. If he keeps doing a good job, contacts, favours, people willing to share a titbit with him will all grow. It's just the nature of the profession. He clearly is perceptive, understands his field, good with people etc, so he has all the makings of a good sports journalist.
The Athletic as a whole I imagine has to have some decent contacts around the game.

Why would the Vox party want to use his name and likeness? Who does he think he is, Connor McGregor? And if so, why would he follow multiple prominent members of that party on Twitter if you’re concerned about being associated with them?

May I ask why you are not a fan of Conway? He seems to have great sources around the club, and some of his articles about Derby have been to a very high standard and provided great insight on a variety of topics. The only thing I don’t like at times are his ‘tactical’ pieces. It’s a shame local journalists don’t go into the same depth that he does.
Just to bring it back on topic, the article also mentions looking at the way the club look at recruitment!

I am not entitled enough to think that it's my club and it should reflect exactly what I believe. I am also realistic enough to know that most football club owners are unlikely to share my views on a range of matters. But I would like to know more about this fellow's association / support of the far right in Spain. How real is it? How vocal is he likely to be? What actions has he been involved in? Or might become involved in. Vox is not part of the mainstream in the same way as a businessman who votes Tory is.
Having a poo team is bad enough but is this deal going to damage the club's name and reputation locally and nationally? I'd like to know more about it rather than just accept it unquestioningly.

It matters a hell of a lot - I don't expect everyone I meet to share my views on the structure of the Social Contract arising from the Miners Strike but I also don't think you just write off views because they don't directly impact you. If the owner of my football club has extreme right wing - or other - views then I'm not of the mind to just say 'no worries, as long as he buys us a new striker'. Football is not that important.

But if you were muslim yourself, imagine how you'd feel if someone heavily involved in the hierarchy of your football club supported a political group openly calling for a 'reconquest' of Spain and the deportation of tens of thousands of Muslims. yeah that's a problem to me.

Considering Vox run on outright anti-Islam platforms and we have players and fans who are Muslim or have families that are Muslim, It becomes a bit of a problem imo.

"..Vox has a plan to deport migrants legally entitled to be in Spain if they have committed an offence, and wants to prevent any migrant who comes in illegally from staying.
The party, which proposes to "make Spain great again", opposes abortion and same-sex marriage.
.. It has also sought to roll back legislation aimed at protecting women from gender violence, claiming it discriminates against men."
It's not keen on Catalan autonomy or the reburying of Franco's body to a 'low-key' cemetery.
Wonder which bits of the Vox party manifesto our boy Alonso is keen on?

Great - I wasn't overly keen on an owner with links to a fairly dubious UAE regime, but at least it was indirect and some allowances could be made for cultural differences. Now it seems Mel is selling the club to someone who is so far right that he has stood for election as a representative of an actual neo-Fascist party.
Getting harder to justify that season ticket.

He literally stood as a Senate candidate for the far-right VOX party in Spain who run on an anti-immigrant, anti-feminist, anti-gay, authoritarian platform.

I guess we wait and see, but I can't stress how much I REALLY didn't want to see this come to fruition.
I really don't like the idea of a guy who is openly far right, with limited cash of his own, coming in to become the figure head of a unknown consortium. A 29-year-old at that.
This very much looks like a nail in the coffin to me, rather than anything I can be optimistic about. If you're anything but concerned then I would really like to know what you know, because this is a bigger red flag than the fake Shiekh in my opinion.

I think Mel's choices can be characterised as "Hobson's Choice" - but I agree, I do not have huge faith that the land of milk and honey is now on the horizon. Best we can hope for is "we'll give them a budget for 2 seasons to go up, they make, or if they don't we get back what we can then get out".
BUt in the meantime, lets all fire up the dualingo and habla espaniol and see if we can get some puns on the run.

I just think that people’s concerns were dismissed too quickly.
But the same happened with Cocu and people eventually saw where the supposedly negative posters like myself were coming from.
You’re right - it is in our hands and we do have games that are there to be won and that would ease any nerves.
I am sure if we beat Luton and draw at Reading, I’ll be getting stick again.
But on current form, I am struggling to see where the points are coming from with the exception of 2-3 games.
I just worry whether we have got anything left in the tank, because we have lost our way hugely in recent weeks.
If performances and results are anything to go by in March, the players and the staff seem to have thought the job was done in February and we could coast.
I guess we have two weeks to rediscover that fire.
