What formation did we play ? was it warnes prefered 3 at the back with wing backs ?

It was essentially the 3-4-3 we finished the season using, with two wings-backs, and two attacking midfielders narrow either side of the striker.

In the first-half, the midfield four were a “box” two CMs and two AMs. After the break it was more of a diamond, DM, CMs x 2, and AMC but it went back to a box when Robinson came back on for Thompson.

There are others far more informed on the academy than myself, I seem to recall one of you saying part of the reason the team struggled last year was a lack of central defenders, or did I imagine that?

The main CB for the U21s last season was Harrison Solomon, with converted full-backs Max Bardell (RB) and Will Grewal-Pollard (LB), as well as Leigh Kavanagh (on loan in the first part of the season) partnering him.

Bardell and Solomon both had problems with injuries last season and midfielders Darren Robinson and Adebayo Fapetu were used in central defence once Kavanagh had returned to his parent club.

Towards the end of the season, first-year scholar Dan Cox stepped up from the U18s to play CB in the U21s, and did well in the Derbyshire Senior Cup Final against Buxton.

I would question it as a 2+1 is a scholarship + pro deal and is the standard one given out to most lads joining as a first year scholar. Can only think he’s been released by Spurs.

Agreed. It’s rare for Derby County to give out three year scholarship deals. The last one I can remember was Henry Wise but, even then, he was given a third year after an injury plagued second year (so we must’ve seen something in him) rather than a three year deal up front.

  4. An observation: on the Official Club Directory, Ian Dickinson is no longer listed under "Board of Directors". Originally there were three names, including Mr. Dickinson, but now it's just the two: David Clowes (Owner) and Richard Tavernor (Secretary).

Kwaku Oduroh was in pre-season training today with the first team squad as well.

  6. I do like Jason Knight, a lot, but for an attacking midfielder anybody looking at his numbers from the outside would surely say he didn’t score enough goals last season, nor did he have enough assists. And that’s playing in League One.

Also, it doesn’t matter how much we think he’s worth, he’s only worth what someone is willing to pay.

On the other hand, there’s a gamble to be had here in that if we don’t sell Knight, and we get promotion, he may be willing to stay and sign a new contract in the Championship with Derby but, if we don’t go up, or he’s unwilling to extend his stay, he can leave for nothing next summer.

Sounds like a good change for the youth football, there’s lots of lads who just get held back extra years to play for the u21s, think Ethan Wassel for us. Knew he’d never make it but just kept him on when he could’ve left and rebuilt himself earlier

Connor Dixon would fall into that category as well. Last season, Connor was an overage U21 player.

Yes he’s signed a deal. 2nd years moving to u21s on new deals are Richards, Moore, Moloney, Fapetu along with Robinson and Evans who have been pros for a season now.

The only U21 in contract talks was Jack Bates, the rest were all released apart from Kido Taylor-Hart and Billy Vigar, who were both on loan from Arsenal.

Be interesting to see if any or all of that trio are part of our U21 squad next season.

  10. U21s - appearances and goals 2022/23 Season

Based on soccerway, cross-referenced with the Official Derby County website (where there was an U21 match report), these are the U21 appearances and goals stats for the 2022/23 Season as far as I can tell:

    Notes:

[1] In the penalty shootout against Alfreton Town, penalties were scored (5 out of 5) by:

    1. Lo-Everton
    2. Cybulski
    3. Oseni
    4. Taylor-Hart
    5. Brown

[2] The unnamed trialist came on as an 82nd minute substitute for Ibrahim in the 1-2 defeat away at W.B.A. U21s on Friday 16th September 2022.

[3] Players still contracted to the club are in bold.

  11. I know I posted this in the 22/23 thread but I thought I'd post it again in the Academy Thread 23/24 for reference. I'm working on the U21 appearances and goals and will post that as well when I've finished it.

    U18s - appearances and goals 2022/23 Season

Based on soccerway, cross-referenced with the Official Derby County website (where there was an U18 match report), these are the U18 appearances and goals stats for the 2022/23 Season as far as I can tell:

  12. Now that the player profiles have been updated on the official DCFC website with players released at all levels removed, a quick glance at the U21 Player Profiles shows how thin on the ground the U21 squad is currently.

Although that is without Callum Moore, Riley Moloney, Keilen Robinson and Carlos Richards who are still listed on the U18 Player Profiles but will step up to the U21s next season.

I’m not sure there will be that much budget to bring in U21 players this summer as, I suspect, budget will be prioritised for the first-team squad.

Great work, Stu. I don't get to many under 18s games but always interested to see who might be doing well and pushing to progress to the next level.

Do you get to watch them regularly? If so, who are your picks?

    Thank you, @angieram.

No, I don’t get to watch the U18s unless they are playing at Pride Park or somewhere other than Moor Farm. To be honest, I hadn’t realised the games at Moor Farm were open to the public but, as they are usually early Saturday afternoons and would be tight to make first team games, I haven’t really looked into it.

So I’ve only really seen the U18s who step up to the U21s. The standouts to me are Darren Robinson, Harry Evans and Harry Hawkins, Jaydan Davidson, Dajaune Brown and Carlos Richards. But then I rated Sam Sebagabo (who has been released) so take what I say with a large pinch of salt.

I’m excited to see how England youth international Jack Thompson adapts to full-time football next season, as well as two other youth internationals (assuming they sign on as scholars) in Niall McAndrew (Ireland) and Cruz Allen (Wales).

If my record keeping is correct, an incredible 44 players were named in U18 matchday squads last season - quite a few of them being U16s so, hopefully, that will give them a head-start experience wise for next season’s U18 campaign.
