It's a fight that they can't win, though.
“There isn’t a train that moves in this country, not a bin gets emptied or a shelf that gets stacked stacked without the kind, generous permission of the working class.”
They need us. We don't need the financial speculators and the billionaires.

I really don't have a problem with what Elon's done. Plenty more rich people have done less, in fact caused more problems than they solved. He's perhaps overstated his contributions but he's obviously part of the whole EV and space thing. I'll gloss over his contribution to Twitter, but to be fair I hated it before him and he's not improved it in my eyes, so that's just a waste of billions to me.
He's a complex person. I understand he's come from money - emerald mines, not diamond, I thought - so it's difficult to think that he's not had a start that most people haven't. It's like Jarvis Cocker told us, even if he's playing at being a pauper, working long hours in difficult jobs, there's always the option to go back to Mum and Dad and say he got it wrong, forgive me. So he's not had the same drab existence that most of us had. He could risk it all, knowing he's got options most of us would never understand. But it's hard to hold him at fault for that, he didn't choose his family and he hasn't taken the easy route that perhaps he could have.
I also don't mind that he's using space as a vehicle for his ego, as some of his critics may level at him. It's going to produce things that will be positive for humanity. And as others have said, all that Bezos has contributed is a massive carbon footprint for his big f'off yacht. There's no expectancy that Musk will do anything positive with his wealth, that's the beauty of capitalism. It's yours, you can waste it killing the planet if you want (I'd argue it's a massive flaw in capitalism that there's no protection from killing everyone, if it makes people rich enough). It isn't a zero-sum game, we don't have to save the bees OR go to Mars. We are perfectly capable of doing both. And more. World governments should be doing far more than Elon is doing, that's the main problem. Because there's more money to be made in doing things the old, dirty, planet-destroying way than innovating and doing something creative that fixes the world's problems.

The missus asked me if I'd got any plans for Easter.
I told her yes, the same as Jesus.
I'm gonna disappear Friday lunchtime and turn up sometime Monday........

I'd fill it and try drilling pilot holes once it's properly set. If it fails, you're no worse off.

Do you think HMRC should be able to overrule a court of law?
Frankly tax laws are a joke, and are used against the poor. "Taxes are for little people".
Odd that the rich ruling class allowed that to happen.

We should be more French.
We've lived through the greatest transferral of wealth in human history, from the early 80's onwards, and barely raised a peep.
Poll tax was probably the only flashpoint in the intervening years.
No longer can one household wage support a family, no more free higher education, no more easily accessible health care system, no more cheap and readily available public transport system, no more housing that the average young person can even dream of renting, never mind owning!
On pretty much every metric, society has gone backwards, yet we pay more and more for the privilege of even existing.
We've never needed a Guy Fawkes more than now.

Totally agree. So the government should once and for all close the tax loopholes. I pay my tax without seeing it, straight out of my wages like I have for the last 46 years.
The first 12k is tax free then the rest is taxed, every penny I earn over that amount is taxed.
Do the same on all money earnt. Dividends, interest, bonuses,, no upper limit. All income over the threshold taxed without fear or favour.
If that happened the tax rate would be so low that everyone would be happy.
Except the very rich billionaires of course so it'll never happen as they happen to be the greedy barstewards who own and control the government.
