Still can't really understand how come Clowes gets in new 'reputable' Academy staff, but chased after Warne as first team manager.

Whilst I really didn't want to watch two seasons in league 1, we were meant to be rebuilding. And whatever some people think he's not making the most of our older Academy players either.

Be glad when the window is shut.

Tbh, I think it's been hinted at a couple of times. They overestimated how long it would take to 'rebuild' the academy, so didn't expect many players to come through for a couple of years. This would have likely been a factor towards opting for a manager with minimal histroy of bringing through academy players, and no working history with a category 1 academy.

Just looking at Middlesbrough & Blackburn each about to sell an academy player for around £20m then considering how little time our young players have had to show their value.

Imagine actually giving our youngsters some minutes in the first team and getting a £20m bid... 😕

Boro's Rogers was actually a £1.5m signing in the summer. Similar situation as Whittaker signing for Plymouth and now being linked with £10m+ moves. There's a common theme with the clubs selling young players for a lot of money - they have 'modern coaches' who have faith in playing youngsters.
The market for Championship players used to be only PL clubs, but that market initially slowed down around Covid. However, clubs from Europe (Germany and Italy in particular) are now starting to take greater interest, in the hope of churning a massive profit to PL clubs in the future.

Young players prefer signing for clubs with modern coaches, and the club trust them more with their players. Carrick is a great example. This season alone he's signed Rogers, van den Berg, Azaz, Greenwood and Thomas. Rosenior has signed Philogene, Connolly, Carvalho, Delap, Twine and Morton

What bit of "We are under an EFL-agreed business plan, which was a condition of us coming out of Administration" do you find so difficult to comprehend?

Just because we're currently operating under a business plan doesn't mean we couldn't have signed players who would have played a greater role than the ones we did sign. A few free agents signed by L1 clubs which could have been alternatives to who we signed (and who they signed for):

Bradley: Pennington (Blackpool), Lopata (Barnsley), Jones (Charlton), Shaughnessy (Portsmouth), Poole (Portsmouth)
    Elder: Sparkes (Portsmouth)
Ward: Dacres-Cogley (Bolton), Clark (Port Vale)
Fornah / Embleton: Morgan (Blackpool), Chislett (Port  Vale), Knibbs (Reading), Wing (Reading), Matt Smith (Wigan)
John-Jules / Washington / Waghorn: Martin (Bristol Rovers), Harris (Oxford), Rodrigues (Oxford), Smith (Reading)

Of the players listed, all are rated higher according to Whoscored than the players we signed, with the exception of Waghorn who is higher than Harris.

  4. Gregory's use to us should be similar to the use Lampard had for Nugent. Handy backup as a 3rd choice CF when playing with just 1 up top. If we were signing him for that role, I would be happy with it. However, we need someone who will play a more important role at this moment in time.

  5. Not stricly about January signings, but I thought an profile comparison with our 3 main promotion rivals would highlight where we were need to focus our attention on.

    A few points of note:

    1. I would say Warne's intended age profile is close to what Bolton currently have - the majority between 22 and 29, with more regular starters being in the upper end of that range. However, Bolton are known for having a more patient passing style. More game time over the rest of the season to the likes of Blackett-Taylor, Nyambe, Fornah and Ward would go some way to addressing the imbalance.

    2. Those 3 clubs combined have given players aged 30+ 10538 minutes. We've given almost double the minutes to players over 30, with overr 12000 minutes to those aged 32 and over. Peterborough have almsot no players over the age of 24!

    3. Both Portsmouth and Peterborough have given more minutes to those 21 and under. This is where we should have included Thompson and DRobinson much more than we have done. Occasional game time to the likes of Brown also would have helped. Rooney's injury is a mitigating factor.

Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP) is the Financial Fair Play rules for all League One and League Two Clubs. The SCMP requirement is whereby a Club's Player-Related Expenditure shall not exceed the sum of 60% or 50% of the Club's Relevant Turnover for League One and League Two Clubs respectively.
If DCFC are restricted differently can someone suggest how much more money DC would have invested for transfers?  Maybe we just don’t have the money

It's not exactly 60% as it's 60% of some income and 100% of others. Derby will be around the 60% mark though.

The Reading fire sale is well underway. They're flogging Tom McIntyre to Portsmouth for just £75k, someone who I'd really like at Derby. Good age at 25, experience in the Championship with 100 odd games. https://www.readingchronicle.co.uk/sport/24083056.reading-fc-defender-verge-portsmouth-move-cut-deal/

As already said there's that Knibbs there, obviously Savage junior. Why aren't we looking at shopping there? We had Carson and Byrne off Wigan in their time of need. Plenty had our pants down during the admin year. Time to return all the love.

I mentioned it in another thread, but McIntyre is exactly the type of player we should avoid. Since being in the Reading first team, he's been out for an everage of 4 months every season, including 3 motnhs out already this season.

I think it's more A and B  - if Burton Albion can afford the loan fee for a Prem academy striker then we can.   Look at transfermarkt and the loans other league 1 sides have - we've really failed to use the loan market in tne way other teams have.

That forward Burton signed has only scored 1 goal more than Brown at U21 level this season and that's in a side which scored 10 past Sunderland as well as 5 against both Sunderland and Blackburn. We're looking for a better forward than who Burton target.

Saw that one earlier, clearly a nonsense account with nowt better to do, BUT I wouldn’t be against the signing as someone suggested the other day

Out of contract in the summer but he would still be a risky signing. He was playing in the Welsh leagues up until last season. He only scored 2 L2 goals last season, but has hit form this season, scoring more this year than he ever has done in the Welsh Leagues

Thanks, I knew it would be minimal but that’s more than I thought.

I don’t suppose you know the cut off in terms of definition? With players like Whittaker it’s pretty cut and dry, as would be future sales for players like Gordon and Delap.

Players like Ebosele, Plange & Ebiowei were signed to our academy but weren’t exactly ‘developed’ by us, do you know if the solidarity payments by definition cover players like that?

It's based on how long they were at our club and at what ages.

Ebiowei was only here for 1 season, so that would be 0.5%.
Plange, only 6 months on a permenenat then laon for the next 6 motnhs - I think he'd still be 0.5%.
Festy joined us at 16, so we would get 2% and Bray Wanderers another 2%
Gordon and Delap left at the end of their U16 seasons, so we would only get 2% for each of them, unless we still have sell-on clasues for them (didn't Quantuma cash in on them?)

Peterborough signing  a Brentford winger on loan so they’ve strengthened.

Only added depth. Mason-Clarke and Poku will still be their starters. Olakigbe will be a bench option alongside their only other winger (Ajiboye). We've strengthened our winger options more than them.

True, Nelson was struggling in the last 15 minutes on Saturday & Collo is 2 bookings (in the next 8 games) away from a 2 game ban

Bradley, Nyambe and Forsyth can all cover CB (dependant on formation). It could even be an opportuntity for Bardell/Bartley to step up, or DRobinson to fill in if there was an injury crisis.
Even if Collins picked up 2 yellows in the next 2 games, the third game is Feb 13th, around the time we expect to see Waghorn and Washington return. In the unlikely scenario of us not signing a forward, Mendez-Laing would be the player used at CF for a game or two.

The pot for permanent signings is empty isn't it? Or was I dreaming that bit of information when the Blackett-Taylor deal structure was talked about.

We concluded that was the case but it wasn't official. All we know is there are two pots of money and we used the loan pot to sign Blackett-Taylor. The permanent pot may be empty, or it may have been saved for a different signing.

  14. 8 minutes ago, Kernow said:

The way I read it is that we would still be entitled to some payment as we contributed to his education. I don’t know what the cut off or definition is in terms of that, but as Whittaker came right through our academy we should get a small amount, but given the quoted fees, it’s a sum that could still be useful for us.

You are correct. I believe we will be due 3% - we receive £300k if he's sold for £10m

I could watch him play all day. From the moment he made his debut (was it v Tranmere in the cup?), he immediately became my favourite player since the 70's heroes.

In his debut game he looked anything but a footballer, skinny, young kid that he was, but he calmly took down an awkward 40 yard pass and passed it on accurately without thinking about it. Easy. Very gifted player, intelligent and made others around him look good with the weight of his passes and vision.

You say he's never really hit the heights yet he's had a good career in the top flight of English football. How high do you have to go to be recognised as a top footballer?

If we go up i'd expect David Clowes to sell a few members of his family to finance Hughsey's return to see us back to the Prem.

His debut was against Peterborough. He came on in injury time and we ended up conceding, losing 3-2 (we went 2-0 up in the first half). His first start was also against Peterborough on the last day of the season. He was played at LM in that game.

Out of contract in the summer...

Did Warne say anything about his attitude perception, or was it more what he thought he could still do from a physical/ability standpoint? Genuine question, I don't remember.

The first reason Warne gave was "ego"/attitude. Over time he decided to give different reasons - ranging from age, ability, squad size

If we can loan them first and pay for the loan....

Ince must be on 20k a week at Watford. Would have him back in the ten role easily but don't suspect the Pride Park Pitch would help his game lol.

If Warne's perception of Waghorn's attitude didn't pass his character test, then Ince definitely won't.

I wonder if something changed last minute with our finances, perhaps since the release of our accounts?

The noises leading up to January, similar to last year, were that we would be strengthening across the pitch.  I am sure Leigh Curtis had provided some positive updates leading up to Jan.

Warne was talking again about how he doesn't need to sell the club to players, they want to join.

Clowes was saying Warne had funds to strengthen.

Bids had gone in for players, Warne was watching someone who had been recommended to him, the ones we want would be starters and not squad players, etc.

Brown went out on loan, which surely was done on the understanding someone was about to join, otherwise it is a strange decision.

So what has changed? Were we shopping in Harrods with a quid all along, have our targets decided to go elsewhere, or has the rug been pulled from under us?

Some of the budget would have been used on John-Jules and Nyambe. We also used a significant amount on Blackett-Taylor and we know there's enough left over for at least 1 other signing.

Mubama contract negotiations at West Ham ‘difficult’ due to new agent. Sounds like one we might want to avoid.

Negotiations ahve been going on for months. From what I remember seeing, he essentially wants to see a path into the first team (hence why he started getting minutes at the end of a few league games). It's possible he'll only a new deal if he's now allowed out on loan to play regularly, but West Ham want to keep him around just incase of an injury.

Oh really ? I didn’t know that I would still like us to take a punt now and again on someone lower down the leagues

I remember Bobby Davison being a brilliant signing but hadn’t heard about him much before we signed him  …we don’t seem to go for up and coming talent

Also Simmo …what a great signing he was and scored so many for a wide midfielder better than some strikers

He was on trial, then played and scored in a game just 1 week before we went in to admin which would have stopped us signing any players (even for the U23/21 side). It took him 2 months to then find a new club (Wycombe).

What happened to the FB Gill? Is injured or have I made him up? 😄

How old is the CB pairing they look useful?

Gill is a 1st year scholar and hasn't played for the U21s yet. I expect he'll start to get a bit of U21 action next season, with Moloney 1st choice and Gough being an option at LB and LW. It's why I also expect Jeffcott to go back to Arsenal at the end of his loan.

Bartley is 20, whilst KRobinson is 18 (2nd year scholar). There's also Cox, who has turned 18 today, but he has been out since November.

Apparently we've snuck in a new midfield signing that's gone completely under the radar:

The young midfielder from Wigan must have had a very impressive debut! 🤣🤣

Must have been part of the swap deal which resulted in Cashik being in the TotW for them last week
