Rams boss lining up a double swoop

DERBY County boss Nigel Clough could be on the brink of completing two defensive signings.

http://www.burtonmail.co.uk/imagelibrary/Client%20Images/Client00004/ResizeCache/00052000/00052075%20-%20200x230Coventry City are believed to have accepted an £800,000 offer from the Rams for highly rated centre-half Richard Keogh.

And Clough has been strongly linked with a move for Leeds United’s promising left-back Aidy White.

Keogh seemed poised for a move to Cardiff City, but the Sky Blues have given the 25-year-old permission to speak to Clough, who needs to bring in a new central defender after the £1.1million sale of Jason Shackell to Burnley.

The player is also believed to be a target for Bristol City and Leeds, and says he wants to speak to all interested parties before he makes a decision.

Coventry are resigned to losing Keogh after he refused to sign a new contract.

They have declined to reveal which club has had a bid accepted, but it looks certain to be Derby.

Keogh stayed at home when Coventry set off on their pre-season trip to Scotland this week.

Clough will not talk about his potential targets, but said: “We are interested in bringing a couple of players in before the start of the season. All we can do is put our best offer on the table.

“We can also show them what we have to offer here in other ways apart from just money, and hopefully that will convince them.”

Sky Blues boss Andy Thorn accepts that Keogh will return to the Championship and says: “There is an air of inevitability about Richard (leaving). Everybody is resigned to it.” Full-back White is also thought to be a possible target for the Rams.

The 20-year-old has rejected a new deal with Leeds, but would command a fee of around £500,000 because of his age.

Clough, meanwhile, has reacted angrily after missing out on Crewe Alexandra defender Kelvin Mellor, who has signed a new two-year deal at Gresty Road.

The Rams had hoped to sign the 21-year-old by offering him a three-year deal.

However, Crewe responded by making an improved contract offer for the third time, which the former Nantwich Town player has now accepted.

Mellor is currently recovering from an ankle operation, but will be available for training within the month.

Clough said: “We had a good meeting with Kelvin, his dad and a couple of representatives,.

“I think they spent quite a bit of the meeting telling us how utterly dismayed and dejected they were about his treatment at Crewe.

“Crewe put a year on the table, which they felt was disrespectable in terms of the terms.

This has agent written all over it.

Clearly angling for a better deal from Leeds. What better way to push things forward than to claim interest from another club (moreover, a club that has publicly failed to sign a left back).

This will end with White signing a new improved contract with Leeds.

Ooh, you can't possibly suggest that any Leeds player could be so underhand!

I'm shocked...and stunned......and shocked. 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

If Nige does sign Keogh and White there will be a useful symmetry to the Rams line-up.

Let's get behind Nige and give him our full support. He knows what he's doing and the lumps that get in the way to stop him achieving his aims.

Steady on Brummie. You'll have a few on here breaking out in a rash!!

I wholeheartedly agree, but 30 people asking for their season ticket money back and a couple of angry threads on this forum hardly provided much of an obstacle to Clough's plans anyway 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Was it 30? I heard it was 3 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> .

Sky Sports understands Derby County are leading the race to sign Leeds defender Aidy White, although the Whites are refusing to give up on keeping him.

The Rams have held talks with White, who is out of contract at Elland Road, about a switch to Pride Park.

Derby boss Nigel Clough is a big admirer of the youngster and he is keen to bring him on board.

Leeds would be due a compensation fee should he leave, but Neil Warnock is set to hold further talks with the player about signing a new deal.

White has so far been unable to agree a new deal with Leeds and a host of clubs have been keeping tabs on his situation.

The 20-year-old is weighing up the offer from Derby with Leeds expected to make a last-ditch bid to try and keep him at Elland Road.
