But if Warne wants to play with wing backs why would we want another winger when we have NML, CBT and Barkhuizen?

Not a comment on Murphy, but if we're playing with WBs, we need at least 4 options. WB is by far the most most physically demanding position in modern football and expecting 3 players only to cover the two slots over a 50 game season is a recipe for disaster IMO.

NML, CBT & Barks are not wing backs….. it completely negates their attacking attributes.  Warne got the best from NML when he stopped playing him at wing back and gave him more attacking licence to play across the front line.  They suit a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3.  NML & Barks can play as the 2nd striker in a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2.  If Murphy came he would be similar…….. but not a wing back IMHO.

Post is a bit muddled, but it does open with, 'not a comment on Murphy' which ought to have been the clue to my meaning.

Also, I'm not suggesting NML, Barks and CBT are wing backs, nor would I want them to be. To my eye at least, Wilson, Ward and Sibs are the only current genuine WB's (not sure about Elder yet,  but I think he plooks more of an LB) and that's not enough.

Maybe (hopefully) he will come away from that formation as a preferred formation. It's still good as another option. We've complained about a manager not having a plan B in the past. Hopefully a flat back 4 with wingers is the preferred formation.

I took your original meaning, but I'm not even sure they are classic wingbacks themselves, other than Ward.

Wilson feels like a frustrated winger who likes to take on his man but who will work hard defensively if told to. Sibley is obviously a converted attacking midfielder who may yet find his lack of real pace and trickery mean wing back suits him better.

Forsyth on his day could play that more defensive wing back role but isn't getting up and down the pitch enough.

Elder's been in/out and hot/cold but 'could' play that traditional role if he keeps fit.

Definitely light if we aim to play wingbacks consistently.  Feels like eg Smith were shoe-horned into positions they played well in, but I'd expect Warne to buy more specialist players this window.

Haven't really got a sense which is his preferred formation now. Niambe could play centre back and so if we see wingbacks being bought then that could be the answer.

Fair point but we need to upgrade also. Think we’d need one more option so we have some options. He has played 4 a lot over the season which would leave us 1 light IMO.

NML I think will do well, CBT is the unknown but will be given the chance, Barkhuizen is the one where you think if Warne had any influence over it he wouldn’t be here, maybe he’ll end up moving on.

Wouldn’t actually mind Josh Murphy. Des Buckingham almost completely changed the way Oxford played during the end of last season. They were a lot more compact and hit teams on the break more. This coincided with Murphys upturn in form.

I think it would be a sensible signing that would work for both parties.

Interestingly this fella on Twitter (claims to be a freelance journalist covering the EFL) posted this earlier and also linked us to Rodak the other day;

He doesn’t have a massive following on there but he did recently get the Chey Dunkley to Chesterfield and George Lloyd to Shrewsbury transfers correct so maybe he has some credibility 🤷🏻‍♂️

EDIT - a quick scroll back to January on his account shows he got a few right then as well.
