Surviving on £1 a day for food and drink

sage
Message added by Day,

Many families across the county may be forced to rely on food banks for the first time this year, with businesses either closing down or laying off staff.

If you can, even if it's just the cost of a pie and a pint or even a match ticket, please donate and help us put a meal on a family's table tonight.

I will probably buy £10-11 in one shop then fill gaps with 'end of day shopping'.

I haven't sorted it all out yet, but i should put a limit on shopping and cooking/preparing time.

Sensible. Keep a quid back for milk. It's perhaps unlikely to stay fresh for a week. Could consider getting your milk at the start and then freezing half of it. Sue says Pasteurised lasts longer, but it's more expensive.

Baking potato’s are ok but it’s the cost to bake em that’s the killer for people on low income.

Food banks have stopped taking root vegetables at the moment I hear.

I agree @Boycie. So people on low incomes are forced to buy food that is easier to heat, possibly less nutritious and less expensive.

Let's all get behind @sage and see if we can't raise just a bit to help out.

This is a quite a challenge but we’re going to give it a try

here’s what we’ll buy (food only tea and coffee etc we’ll use from stock)

bread x 2 = 72p

sausages 16 = 1.59

chicken thighs 1kg = 1.85

rice 1kg = 45p

penne pasta 50g = 29p

potatoes 2.5kg = 89p

cornflakes 500g  = 55p

crumpets 9 = 37p (Asda)

bananas 5 = 70p

onions 3 = 39p

tinned tomatoes plum 400g = 28p

tinned tomatoes chopped 400g = 28p

frozen mixed veg 1kg = 69p

baked beans x2 = 44p

grated cheddar 250g = 1.49

eggs 15 = 1.18

milk 2 litres = 1.00

spread 500g = 69p

total 13.85

prices are online might shave a few pence off the total at local markets for the bananas/onions/potatoes

@sage good luck

Yep good idea sure you’ll find something

In theory with the menu plan we’ve worked out it looks just about doable but will need some firm commitment!
