Martin still runs The Exeter , The Crossing in Burton and The Duke of Devonshire in Belper. Gave up the Silk Mill 12 months or so ago as the brewery put the rent up loads. Anti Pasti still play now and again. Martin doesn’t usually sing now just the occasional guest slot i believe

Ahhh the "Duke". Reminds me of when I was growing up as a lad in the early 1980s, the Duke started offering a "topless barmaid night" on a wednesday of all evenings.

My mother sent me down to check it out on the 3rd week. As a randy 18 year old imagine my disappointment to be confronted by a muscle mary with his top off and a fine luxuriant Freddie Mercury 'tache.

Not that i am one to stereotype of course..........?

Sorry I'm late to this party but it's been a really enjoyable read. I've been in the home end a few times, mostly with friends, most recently at Hull this season where my "friend" made it clear who I supported. No problem though only friendly banter; I suppose it helps when the home side win though.

Two past games stand out though.

One was a 3-0 loss at at Anfield in 1980. I don't remember it so much for the game but the walk back past Stanley Park, no police escort, and the level of violence. We learnt later one lad from those we traveled up with had his jaw broken.

Another game didn't actually involve Derby. My wife was working in Middlesbrough so we went to see them in a cup match against non-League Hednesford. This was the Boro side with Ravenelli and Juninho but Hednesford scored first, so my wife and I jumped up and grinned. Those around us thought we were supporters. After Boro scraped home 3-2, the Boro fans came up, shook our hands and congratulated us on a good performance.

I remember one game (vs Swindon) at BBG when about half a dozen Swindon supporters got into the Popside (about 8 feet from where I was standing).  They were being idiots and were intent on winding up us Derby fans.. I seem to recall that it took the stewards till early 2nd half to move them out of the Popside , despite several Rams fans telling the stewards right through the first half that they were there and intent on causing trouble...

This must have happened after the seats were put in I guess?

I remember Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and Cardiff coming into the popside. Cardiff got the police to open the gate in the fence before making themselves known by throwing calling cards through the fence. Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea were removed, but not by the stewards.

Yep was right next to the arsenal fans when they kicked off in the pop side , was just a youngster then?

I've done a few of these, mate a fan of the opponent sort of thing. Port Vale away when I was a kid (dad's mate) was uneventful. Leeds in their stand behind the goal, think we lost, it was before we had the run of beating them. I kept quiet that match, it felt like if they outed me I would be in trouble.

SheffWeds in the kop, we won and when we scored one of my mates shouted Derby fan and pointed at me. Anyway he's no mate anymore. No one punched me, I count that as lucky moment as a travelling fan.

Wednesday again in their boxes. With their fans. We won 5-0 and were embarrassingly good, Marco got at least one, it was that era. All the Wednesdayites were very polite. I enjoyed that one, and it was ? on them

Went to the "Only had 10 men" match at the Tree House. I was in the away end, so pretty tame, and it was a bosting match to be at. After the match I went with my son into the Macdonalds which is near the ground. Needless to say it was full of Gumps, and boy did they look miserable. I asked the kid behind the counter if they were doing any 1 for 2 deals, got a dirty look and the meals absolutely slammed down on the counter! We sat inside eating the meal grinning like Cheshire cats at all the sad faces! Brilliant!

Probably a bit older than you so I will mention West Ham and Man City coming into the Popside in the mid 70's.

A group of West Ham made it to the floodlights at the entrance to the Vulcan Street Popside near the corner by the Normanton End floodlight.....they were meeting up ready for an attempted "take" when they got sussed and we saw them off before kick off, lads just entering the ground were punching them as we were chasing them out.

Man City lads appeared like ghosts right at the back of the Popside one game just after kick off. Took a few seconds before the lads piled in and  the City lads were sent packing with the old bill a bit surprised by it all. Can you remember how those gaps opened up even though the ground was full....

After 10 minutes or so a large group of police made their way to the back of the Popside with this Man City fan because someone had nicked his hat (a cap with City colours on it).....he was demanding his hat back and all was fairly good natured at first with the lads laughing until the old bill hit a Derby lad who was taking the mick. It all kicked off and the police and City fan were very lucky to get out in one piece.

I think I left the lads cap on Midland station somewhere...would have been a collectors item now, could have sold it to @loweman2 ?

That's my main memory from when Arsenal came in from the back. We got caught in a surge from the back and the next thing I remember was being against a barrier and turning around and being face to face with the Arsenal mob, that's when my oldest brother and his mates steamed past me and went into them and the rest of us followed.

My only memory of West Ham was when they ran at us down Shaftesbury st and we we just ran straight back and them and they turned tail and some were cowering in the chippy begging us not to hit them.
