Best ever atmosphere at an away game you attended

Done a few already mentioned on here, forgot just what the first 10 minutes at Blackburn were like. Then it went downhill somewhat didn't it?

For me we were away at Palace in Billys promotion season, think it may have been a bank holiday?, and we realised that we would not get automatic as Brum were winning by a few so we all just started singing "We are Derby, SUper Derby, Super Rams" for about the last 30 minutes of the 2nd half was chuffing brilliant to be part of if I'm honest.

Came very close to the awesome Burnley fans in the Fa Cup Replay for the fogged off game where they did "Jimmy Mullens claret and Blue army" for what seemed like the entire game and beyond.

Away at Filbert Street in the mid-eighties in the Milk Cup (League Cup). We had a 2-1 win in the home leg and ended up securing a 1-1 draw away to go through to the next round - quite an achievement for a third division club against a top flight team. I was only a teenager and it was one of my first away games so my memory might be hazy but I am pretty sure we outnumbered the home fans. The singing of "We are Derby, Super Derby, Super Rams" started after about twenty minutes and lasted right through half time and through the second half up to the final whistle. It was loud and absolutely destroyed Fester, clearly lifting the Derby Team. That night after the match was the worst rioting in Leicester's history - nothing to do with Derby fans.

Truly great night

Bloody hell  I remember that (1985) what  a night it was only 10,373 there and we took loads I went on a coach Bobby Davison scored 1-1. First leg at BBG was 2-0 Mclaren and Jeff Chandler

Remember reading about the riots next day !

For Derby games, it has to be Forest 2-3 Derby in the FA Cup and by some distance. Nothing comes close. It had everything you would want in a game of football. It was an absolute white-knuckle ride and the fans (on both sides) gave absolutely everything. To this day, I still remember the sound when Forest scored in the opening minute. It was earth shattering. Only topped by the off-the-charts madness that ensued when Kris Commons cracked one in to seal the sweetest of comebacks.

But to be honest, ever since I moved to Italy, watching Napoli at the San Paolo tops everything I've witnessed at English football grounds.

Roma at home under the lights was absolutely electric and the stadium was only two thirds full and without any away fans. Chievo at home and this crazy turnaround on my birthday, no less.

It's something you just have to experience because words and Youtube videos won't do it justice. But here's a taste:

Notts County away in the third division. I was in the away end behind one of the goals and there was a group of about 10 Forest fans giving us some because they were recently European Champions (so I’m told) and doing more than ok in the first division. Notts County were averaging around 3000 in home games that season but there were more than 13000 in the ground that day. When Bobby scored the first in the 3-0 win literally the whole of the ground jumped up in the air. The Forest fans were nowhere to be seen when the second one went in ?

Yeah the 3-2 was unreal. Luckily missed Forest's first goal as got held up in the police escort.

Was this the game where all the Rams supporters were kept in and taunred a very portly Police Officer with the song "Have you ever seen your dick..." All the other cops were splitting their sides.

Yes amongst other things with his fellow officers retreating awY whilst laughing thier heads off - great memory’s

Too many to mention but.....Southampton away when Steve Howard scored to win 1-0 in our promotion season....Saints battered us in the first half and we gradually turned the screw....SH scored in front of the massive Travelling army with about 10-12 to go we took   7800  I beleive from the original 6500 which was extended ....that is fantastic away support!!!!! COYR

I'm sure we got allocated 3,000 and didn't even sell out

We didn't sell out. I presumed I wouldn't get a ticket then found out 2 days before there were 300 left so ended up going.

Man U away - don't remember the year, but it was during the Bobby Davison era, and we won either 2 - 0 or 2 - 1.

Tickets were hard to come by, but a friend of mine obtained some tickets from his cousin who lived in Manchester, and which placed us firmly in amongst the Manure fans. So it was "sit on yer hands and zip yer lips" time - United fans still had a fearsome reputation in those days. When we scored our first, I half-jumped up but just about managed to remember where we were, bu was sure that we had been "clocked". But hen the second goal went in it turns out there were loads of Rams fans in there, and we all leaped to our feet and gave it some for the rest of the match - safety in numbers, and all that! The swing from fear and trepidation to pure elation was awesome!

Sheffield United away, 0-1 Mid eighties Phil Gee ( I think) thousands of Derby behind the goal.

I also remember a white pool ball being throw onto the pitch from the home supporters

Great days

Great game. I remember jogging back to the train station with my brother with seething Blades flanking the road looking for a victim like a pride of lions looking for an injured wilderbeest.

Wasn’t the pool ball the FA Cup match that Hindmarch scored in? I was sat up top for that match and remember it on my right, I was right at the back of the terrace for the Gee match, might be wrong, I sometimes am

Jeez it was scary; there was scrapping and bottles flying the whole way back to the train station. I was only 12 and bricking it the whole way. Great game and result though. The only game at a proper ground where the away fans outnumbered the home fans.

Special mention to the year before at their place too - FA Cup 1-0 win, Rob Hindmarch (RIP) in front of the away end. 1000s of us there that day and we were in the 3rd division.

If there was a story of Derby in the 1980s, then both of those games would be there as significant milestones.

In fact the 80s was full of great away days probably more than any other era, for such different reasons. Collapse, Survival, Revival and back to the top. Epic!

Other great 80s away games for away attendance and atmosphere:

Lincoln 84 and 85

Notts County 85

Wolves 85 (4-0)

Sunderland 87 (2-1)

Notts 88 (Hebbard volley equaliser in the 89th min in front of the away end)

Villa 88 (Goddard / Saunders - one of the best headers I’ve seen)

More recently, the away games since Mac1 have been pretty good.

But great credit to Nige. The one manager who wanted us to win at the CG more than anyone. And he made it happen. I missed those great games but love watching the highlights. Nige gave us our pride back. And that’s what great away games are all about. Pride and winning in dramatic circumstances.

Up the chuffin SuperRams!
