Yeah why wasn’t that a straight red card? He was in one on one and would have scored

Referee considered it a genuine attempt to play the ball.

Double jeopardy rule yo. It's been around for years.

Considered to overly punish teams to go a goal down following the penalty and having a player sent off.

It unnecessarily punishes the victim team if the penalty is missed of course.

It's not a straight red if you're going for the ball anymore, regardless of if it's the last man, or 6 yards out in an open goal. The defender clearly made a desperate attempt for the ball, he got pretty close to it.

In my eyes, it should be a red because of the 99.9999999% certainty that they'd have scored and gone through, and the foul has ultimately put a stop to that, temporarily or permanently. But double jeopardy and that you know...

Well that’s a silly rule change. So if a player genuinely cheats like suarez did against Ghana in 2010, he wouldn’t be sent off then?

That's a different story. Purposely stopping the ball going in the goal or full on cleaning a player out would still be a red. Sanchez for Colombia was sent off for handball and stopping it going in vs Japan. The Danish defender did make an attempt for the ball, hence no red.

Nah I think the ref decides on the foul whether it looked like a tackle or a cynical swipe. Kind of like excessive force it's up to the ref what he is happy with.

It did look like an attempt to play the ball tbf. A desperate one but still...

So if a player cheats like suarez did against Ghana in 2010, he wouldn’t be sent off? Or is it only if the referee thinks that the player is genuinely going for the ball because it didn’t look to me that he was going for the ball. The player who made the challenge didn’t complain, he knew what he was doing

edit: got my answer

No, he would be sent off. That's deliberate handball. Bizarre example.

If a player makes a genuine attempt to play the ball with a tackle, but fouls the player as the last man - it is a penalty and a yellow card (inside the area) or a freekick and a red card (outside of the area).

It's been around for a good 2-3 years.

The vast majority of "last man" red cards were given to GKs and the rule change was put in place cos that usually destroyed a teams chances.

It's a little unfit for purpose if the penalty is missed, but its improved things immeasurably when the penalty gets scored.

Sith Happens

Next year someone will announce another stupid rule change announcing the ball has to be at least a meter over the line to be a goal.

And let's be honest he misses the next game anyway through cumulative bookings and it made no difference he was on the pitch the last two minutes. Same net result.

You know he'll score the winning penalty and then suddenly it's all about the ref. ?

It astounds me that so many of you were unaware of that change tbh - we've seen lots of last man fouls not result in red cards over the past two seasons.
