Tbf we haven’t this year, for exactly the ffp reasons stated, since Paul clement decided it was a great idea to buy every central midfielder and winger in the championship...

This!

In fact we’ve spent very well for saying the class of players we’ve brought in. Especially in preseason.

I posted this December 10, gives a different view of their situation now:

I'll always remember one chat with the player who used to play under Bruce.

"Steve is definitely one of the best motivators when things are going well."

What about if everything is not that rosy? I asked.

Long silence + uncontrollable laughter didn't leave much to the imagination.

Shame to say, things are going well for them at the moment.

GR's done amazingly well actually. Villa spent £85m last year assembling this squad. This year they've brought in John Terry on God knows how much a week. Wolves have spent £15m on each of their 4 forward players... there aren't many English lads in the Wolves XI.

So basically GR's been asked to come in and compete with two £80m teams with a budget of zero. And he's getting lambasted for bringing in older experienced (cheaper) players.

In third place, you could say we're top of 'our' league.

The Championship is getting far less "unpredictable and exciting" - the winners will be the ones who spend the most. Except Birmingham. Poor old Birmingham.

How much have we spent assembling our squad over the past 3 years though?

Plenty of people crying about how much other teams are spending but like Red_Dawn pointed out earlier in this thread it seems we're soon forgetting how we've tried to bankroll the division. We'd be top out "our" league if we hadn't spent 50+ million too.

We could've spent £500m over the last 3 years but if the result of that is still Jacob Butterfield & Nick Blackman then you can't really consider Gary Rowett to have inherited a £500m squad.

That’s fine but if we’re gonna keep blanketing Villa and Wolves with they’ve spent this much and that much it surely has to work for us too?

It’s just for balance really, we can whip up plent it of excuses but we can’t for others?

If we’re gonna talk specifics then Villa have been without 28 million of their 80 for the most part through injury (Kodjia/Hogan), Wolves have spent big on Neves this season but other than that there’s not much different to most clubs apart from their contacts.

Mr Tibbs easy to say we've spent 50+million but how much have we recouped in sales in those three years at least half of that

Steve Bruce gets teams promoted from the championship - it is his specialty. Not surprised they are doing so well - they still have a lot of money coming in from the parachute payments after all.

Think we will still get playoffs, but who wants to go up as third place runner up. Champions or nothing - wait until next season.

What is our net spend though?

When we've sold Hendrick, Hughes, Christie, Ince, Albentosa etc.

It's a fair comment to say Rowett is lucky with our budget.

But so are the managers of Bristol City, Fulham, Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesborough, Norwich etc with Villa and Wolves far outspending us. Even Cardiff have had big budgets over the last 3 or 4 years and are spending again.

I'd love to know the net spend of the relegated teams over the last three seasons who are still on this league.

Wolves’ net spend this year is around £15,000,000

Ours since 15/16 is similar

Boro have spent a colossal £50,000,000 although their net spend is around £3,000,000.

Arguing over money spent is tedious. As ourselves in 15/16, Boro and Birmingham show - it still has to be spent well.

I'm not arguing over money.

Just interested. What is Boros net sepnd over 3 seasons?

Can anyone be arsed to get our net spend over the last 3 as well? I'm curious.

If someome asked me, i'd say 25 million. But I don't really know.

Just looked. Apparently it's roughly 22 million over 3 seasons. And **** all before that for years and years.

7 million a season over the last 3.
