The most important thing about this match will be the fans. If we turn up simply thinking reading are going to turn up, roll over and have their tummy tickled then it will be a very long match for some.

place your bets on when you will hear groans for us keeping the ball with a few sideways and backwards passing or when you hear someone shout "get it forward"

Usually the other way round when we play reading at home in terms of who rolls over.......

Nugent carrying a knock from Leeds.. so for me:

Carson; Baird, Keogh, Pearce, Olsson; De Sart, Hughes, Bryson; Ince, Russell, Vydra.

Mitchell, Shackell, Camara, Bent, Hanson, Vernam, Elsnik/Nugent if fit.

Did Nugent even get a touch v Leeds?

So you've got Hughes sitting a lot deeper to help shield the back 4, and Ince pushing right on to support the striker.  All that happens then, is we get a massive gap between the forwards and the midfield, the forwards get no service and struggle to score, and we get no ball retention in the final third which puts the back 4 under pressure.

The main problems aren't losing the midfield battle and lack of support for the strikers.  The main problems are lack of tempo when we pass the ball, and lack of ball retention up front.  The lack of tempo is what's causing us to get swamped in midfield - players are holding onto the ball for too long and giving the opposition the chance to press them, instead of passing it quickly and moving into space to give the guy they've passed to an out-ball.  The lack of ball retention is what's causing the lack of support up front - the balls goes forward, and it's lost before support even has chance to get anywhere near.

We need to get our better technical players on the pitch to improve the tempo - i.e. no Shackell at the back, and no Johnson in midfield.  And we need to find some way of keeping the ball in the final third - Vydra and Bent aren't doing it, so Nugent needs to be given a go.  And assuming he can hold the ball up a bit better, we need someone breaking from midfield to actually support the forwards, which will have to be Bryson, given who we have available.

Why can't Vydra help ball retention in the final third and supposrting the striker given his best position is behind a striker?

I have given up trying to second guess formations and how players fit in them. What seems perfect logic on paper rarely seems to work.

I am a bit wary of this game because Reading play football and like possession. We could be out played OR they could be open enough for us to scalp them good and proper. Going to be an interesting day.

Just a bit? They like coming to PP and have had our pants down more often than not in recent years.

Coupled with the fact that we've had 2 pretty poor performances - and I don't associate mac with sudden massive form swings - I see a narrow home defeat, sad to say.

Who says that's his best position? At Watford he mostly played off a target man, making runs onto flick-ons etc.  His only attributes are pace and (supposedly) finishing. He doesn't have the upper body strength, first touch, and awareness to hold the ball up.

Christie? Anyway that line up is probably pretty much spot on.

I'd go with that .

Maybe start Christie and Baird on the bench? Hoping CC get back on same form he was before got injured.

Plus you can add to the mix that Japp Stam might remember all Steve McClaren's ways from when they were both at Man Utd. And if we get a penalty can Carson or anyone take it, instead of Bent!

Yeah like at Watford playing behind a striker? In behind Nugent. His technical ability is underrated he's made some very nice flicks and moves just not finished his chances so far.

You must have a very different definition of 'playing behind a striker' to me.  At Watford he was mostly hanging on the shoulder of the last man, waiting for flick-ons from Deeney.  At Derby, Nugent won't be flicking the ball on to him as he's not that type of player.  And if he's playing on the last man, he's not going to be dropping off, linking play. holding the ball up etc.

I know he's slower than when he used to play LB but surely JS will be better than Hanson? Pearce has to play, Russell will inject some energy into the side.

It'll either be Christie or olsson in, that back four would probably be the slowest we've ever seen.
