3 at the back?

Firstly I need to say that I'm willing to give the new formation a chance but for it to be effective we need some specialists. I don't think we have enough wingers to play 4-4-1-1 currently. It is quite clear we aren't going back to 4-3-3 because Pearson appears bullish to me and is known not to like 4-3-3. In pre season a number of us suggested a 3-5-2 formation because this formation doesn't rely on wingers. This formation also allows us to have the control in midfield as well as having 2 strikers. I don't think we gave it enough time in pre season personally as we only used it for 30 minutes against a quality Benfica side. When Leicester were struggling in the prem, Pearson changed the formation to 3-5-2 and it worked brilliantly, ultimately keeping Leicester up. Could this formation be our gem?

Growing up with TBE playing 3-5-2, I love this system and be happy to see it return.

Who's your 3?

Keogh, Shackell, Fozzy?

Imo it's a very underrated formation. I think a lot of managers are put off by this formation because it can quickly turn into the back 5 but I think that could be a positive as it provides more defensive cover

3-5-2 with two wing backs play as part of the 5.

When done well it creates a fast attacking play and when we come under pressure the wing backs revert to 5 at the back [5-3-2].

We need to be able to release the ball much quicker to play 3-5-2?

Yep, Christie and Olsson wing backs

It would seem to offer a solution to getting more of our better players in their natural positions too.

I'd like an upgrade on Christie though, he's more tofu than Cafu!

Need a holding mid to stand in for George, too.

England sort of played 352 in italia 90 I think and it worked with Wright walker and butcher  - but we need mobile centre backs in the 3 with at least 2 ball players among them.

I'd say Keogh and Fozzy are mobile enough to play the wide centre back roles

I agree that 3-5-2 is worth a try. It allows us to get production from out wide from the only actual widemen we have (our full-backs) whilst making us more solid defensively and allowing us to play three in midfield.

Wouldn't mind seeing this team next game:

Carson

Keogh/Shackell/Forsyth

Christie/Bryson/Baird/Hughes/Lowe

Martin/Blackman

3 at the back would make more sense than the current 4-4-2 or 4-4-1.

would still allow our wingbacks to play the way they do naturally, and would allow the use of 2 attacking midfielders in the centre.
Pearson is stubborn and time will tell whether he is also a fool. In a way its a shame he has got money to spend to build a new squad, as the likes of nigel clough would have been lambastered playing this was with nio money to bring in players as suitable replacements.

On balance I agree with you. I think the centre of the 3 needs the most positional sense and that would seem to be shackells forte. That was the butcher role when England tried it with some success.

Yes the Central CB has to be good tactically and positionally. Wales played a back 3 in the euros and worked the system very well. This system would also be something new as teams in the championship aren't used to playing teams with 3 at the back so it will take them time to adjust to our style.

I like 3-5-2 because it could keep our flair players out there.

Carson

keogh shacks Rawson

Christie Hendrick Bryson Hughes Lowe

Ince Zanzala

When Thorne fit out him in nice Hendrick to the bench and shift Bryson to rcm. Butterfield Hanson backing up the mids. Russell could swap in for Christie and Olsson Fozzy for Lowe.

tired of watching the ever underperforming Bent Blackman and Martin and Ince needs a kick up the backside.
