Southampton on verge of completing £4m Austin deal

Date published: Saturday 16th January 2016 11:49

QPR striker Charlie Austin is set to complete a move to Southampton on Saturday for a fee in the region.

According to The Telegraph, the forward is understood to have passed a medical and agreed personal terms at St Mary’s after the two clubs agreed a fee this week.

Rangers have opted to cash in on Austin with the 26-year-old’s contract due to expire in the summer. The former Burnley centre-forward, who was called into the England squad for the friendly against the Republic of Ireland in June, was the subject of interest from Leicester, Newcastle and Crystal Palace last summer, with the Foxes said to have had a £12million bid rejected by QPR.

Austin has scored 10 goals in 16 Championship appearances this term but a hamstring injury has sidelined the hit-man for the last month.

If we paid £3-4 million for Blackman, what does that say?

What was Blackman supposed to be worth if he had not been out of contract at the end of the season?

But... in short, he is either worth £3-4 million or he is not. If he gets ten goals for us then he is worth £4 million to us this season.

Difficult to compare straight fees while ignoring wages. The top clubs often buy/sell players for £5m or less because the wages are vast. I bet Austin is now on a wage far higher than any of our players.

Derby have reached the threshold of:- we can afford the player but not his wages

This is the thing. At the moment we are overpaying on fees and underpaying on wages, compared with Premier League clubs. Let's hope it's a transitional phase. Twitter fools are saying "why didn't we go for him" but of course we will have tried and been rebuffed. It largely comes down to only being prepared to move in this window for Premier League football (guaranteed beyond the next window) and with that wages that we can only dream of.
