Top 25 Greatest British Designs

·         In the era of smartphones, its relevance may well be largely consigned to history but the red telephone box has been voted the greatest British design of all time.

The phone box - once seen on streets up and down the land - topped a poll that included famous creations such as the Spitfire, the London Underground map and Concorde.

The classic K2 phone box was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott - although interestingly he wasn't a fan of the red colour. He had initially suggested "the outside of the kiosk should be treated with silver paint and the inside coloured a greenish blue". He later conceded that red worked well in urban areas, but was still "more convinced than ever that bright red kiosks in an old village street or a village green will be an abomination".

Neil Scoresby, Head of BT Payphones, said: “We are delighted that our red telephone boxes have been voted the greatest British design of all time.

"The credit for the design goes to Giles Gilbert Scott who designed the the K2 kiosk in 1926 and the more common K6 kiosk which was introduced in 1936 almost 80 years ago.

"There are almost 10,000 red kiosks across the UK, and a further 2,500 red kiosks that have been adopted by local communities to preserve their heritage and provide a community use such as a heart defibrillator station or a library.”

Close behind in the poll was the Routemaster double-decker bus and the Union flag.

Design expert Professor Catherine McDermott, director of curating contemporary design at Kingston University in London, led a panel of judges to create a longlist of great British designs, which was then put to a poll of 2,000 adults to find the 25 favourites.

People chose designs as diverse as the first-class postage stamp and Wembley stadium, as well as the miniskirt and the Savile Row suit.

The survey found that 69% said such designs made them feel proud to be British, while 73% said that things like the Raleigh Chopper bicycle and Dr Martens boots made them feel nostalgic.
