Ambitious got a reaction from Anag Ram in Josh Murphy
He’s been good since Manning left Oxford, but I just don’t see how this one fits. He doesn’t, or at least didn’t, fit the system that we played last season and he’s an older, depreciating winger.
He ticks no boxes for what Warne has publicly stated that he wanted in recruitment this summer. In fact, it flies in the face to how we said we would approach it.

Not sure what the contract looks like, but he’s been offered the biggest deal ever in Preston’s history - larger than what both Sheff Utd and Coventry have offered.
I’ve got to guess it’s going to be in excess of £35-40k a week. All the will in the world, well beyond what we’re going to be offering.

Nathan Trott has an extraordinary record in Denmark, it took me a while to find the numbers but I can see why he’s so highly regarded, especially on the back of this season.
XGOT - expected goal on target.
He had a XGOT of 51.2 goals and he conceded 35. 75% save percentage.
The numbers may even be the close to being the best in Europe, I’ve never seen a disparity like that personally.

It’s relative, obviously, so better strikers tend to put their chances away. No doubt. You can directly compare him to a well-known goalkeeper who has played most of his career at Championship level in Bailey Peacock-Farrell who is also out there on loan from Burnley who has a goal prevention of -1.3. The median for the goalkeepers within the same league is 3, which is high probably due to the poor quality of striker, but is still nowhere near comparable with the 16.2 Trott posted last season.

That’s a brilliant line!

Reminds me of the Everton fan who once phoned 606 on 5 live and said:
"we're a one man team, we just haven't signed him yet"
🤣

Depends on our approach, I’ve just seen Bolton’s chairwomen openly announce that they would need an additional £20m from their investors to compete in the Championship. The gap is huge and we’re essentially starting from square one.
As nice as it would be to aspire to be a boring midtable Championship side, part of me just wants us to go into the season in better condition than Plymouth, Bolton/Oxford, Portsmouth, Wednesday, Blackburn & QPR.

Shandon Baptiste fits the bill for our system too, but he’s played that little football over the past few years that I think it’s hard to actually gauge where he’s at and being ex-prem means high interest. 2000 minutes in the last three seasons in all competitions, not ideal.
Brentford fans rate him as a player, but question his ability to stay fit and play games. It’s a risk vs reward signing but he’s going to get good money from a Championship club - there’s a good chance whoever pays it comes to regret it if he spends the time clogging up the physio’s room.

The bookies’ odds seem to reflect that we will finish midtable - along with Portsmouth.
Bristol City, Derby, Millwall, Portsmouth, QPR & Swansea all priced at 33/1 on B365.
Blackburn, Preston, Cardiff & Wednesday all priced at 40/1.
Plymouth (66/1) and Oxford (100/1) cut away from the rest.

Ambitious got a reaction from Caerphilly Ram in 2024/25 First Team Squad
We need one or two goalkeepers, if Vickers leaves, maybe even three.
Formation depending: a centre back and a left back/left wing back.
There’s five.
replace: Smith, Hourihane, Ebou, Bird in centre mid. That’s four more.
that’s nine.
a winger, potentially. Albeit that would be in addition to what we have now.
then replace: Waghorn, Gayle and TJJ. Potentially Collins. Three or four strikers.
12-14 players.

Ambitious got a reaction from Jackal in Viktor Johansson - gone to Stoke
My proposition is only between English clubs. Transactions between English and Foreign clubs would be applied to different rules.
The transfer window has stagnated due to financial restrictions, but I feel people are missing the point that restrictions on transfer fees actually impact the selling clubs arguably more than the buying clubs as it means there are less clubs buying players and many have to sell to buy. It also means that buying clubs actually have leverage to say ‘we can’t pay x amount because of P&S’ so there is a barrier in place to not get optimal market value.

Ambitious got a reaction from Andrew3000 in Wildsmith
Vickers sounds like he’s off too. The same ITKers who leaked the retained list also mentioned that was the case and having looked on the Rotherham forum, someone on their mentioned a keeper coming in ‘who was well known to the fans’.

Ambitious got a reaction from Ramarena in Retained List
Wildsmith has been a great servant for Derby and I wish him well if we move on. I always felt that Warne was never completely sold and thought at this point where he wants to be paid as a Championship number one goalkeeper that it may play out in this fashion.
The rest I’m really happy about as it means that we are going to strengthen across the board. There is merit in keeping Smith, Collins, etc but they aren’t impactful players at the next level and it takes up a squad place. Collins is on good money too, as I assume Smith may as well be too. It does allow us to shape the squad more so in Warne’s vision.

Ambitious got a reaction from cstand in How much do you think we have to spend on actual transfer fees?
We will learn a lot from the retained list and the scale of work that needs to be done this summer. We know that we are potentially losing 15 of last year’s squad, we know that we would need to increase the squad size for the Championship and only really have one player: Brown who is expected to take a place in the squad.
If we are looking at potentially bringing 13, 14 players to the club this summer then there is undoubtedly going to have to be a healthy budget to accommodate it. I’m sure the Clowes will not be concerned with outlay for players if he truly believes he has the recruitment personnel and coaching personnel because you can sell players at a profit. I don’t doubt for a minute that the days of us spending good money on older, experienced players for the job of getting promotion rather than creating a resale market for ourselves has gone.
Find talented players, develop them and sell them on for higher fees. We have done very well at academy level in achieving just that, but appalling when it comes to recruiting/selling at first team level.

Stoke will happily chuck £20-30k wages at players and can subsidise it through B365 sponsorship.
As a rule, any time they’re at the table for a player just walk away.
