So, a question.
Does Bird get a start in our best eleven?
We have a range of skills and other ‘neat and tidy’ players.
Thoughts?
110% imo, think this calendar year he has come on alot, especially over the summer. I think he's our best player closely followed by Sibley and Knight.
His ball playing ability and composure and close control are prem level, and he has good defensive positioning. I'd drop Hourihane to the bench even though he has alot of quality and play Sibley, Knight and Bird as a midfield 3.
-
I do think he's a decent keeper though tbh, possibly a 6 was more fair on reflection but some of his mistakes stuck in my mind especially the one from the cross first half.

Sorry but how do you give Wildsmith a 5? That’s ridiculous - one error in first half and one poor kick second half yet six shots on target, nothing conceded and pretty commanding. Come on.
Didn't think he was terrible but thought he was below average today. Made a major thumble which I was behind in the South Stand so had a good view of, and thought his distribution was also poor as well.
Made a few good saves but more mistakes than plus points imo, maybe I'm being abit harsh but for me he wasn't great today.

1. Man City
2. Liverpool
3. Arsenal
4. Spurs
5. Man U
6. Chelsea
7. Brighton
8. Newcastle
9. Palace
10. West Ham
11. Brentford
12. Fulham
13. Wolves
14. Villa
15. Leicester
16. Leeds
17. Everton
18. Southampton
19. Forest
20. Bournemouth
Extremely tough to predict this season below 4th, lots of good sides and it will be very competitive.
Fulham as high as 11th is abit of a rogue prediction but I feel if Mitrovic stays fit he could hit 20 goals this season and they have alot of attacking quality.
Chelsea 6th is also a controversial one but I feel Tuchel will go, things will get sour and Man U will improve alot with Casimero, Anthony and time to get used to Ten Hags style.

Feels like a loss tbh, we have to be winning these games.
Questions have to be asked really about the quality of the attacking players we've bought in, especially Collins.
Still early days but not convinced our attacking set up is good enough for promotion, Collins needs dropping to the bench next few games imo.
-
We need to be careful after the break as I reckon they'll have abit of a spell of pressure and and get some set peices ect. that they could score from and if they do that will be that, a 1-0 loss.
If we can keep the pressure on we should win, especially with Sibley and Mcgoldrick on the bench.

I'd go for this team
Wildsmith
Oduro Stearman Cashin Roberts
Bird
Knight Sibley
NML Mcgoldrick Dobbin
Changes in attack and midfield are definitely needed and I will be disappointed to see Smith play in midfield again. Think we need alot more legs and attacking impetus there and that's why I've gone for the academy midfield 3, I think we'll have alot more goal threat and movement through the middle to support Mcgoldrick with that lineup. Tbh I dont rate Collins as a lone striker in the way we are utilising him and that's not just down to fact he hasnt scored.
Mcgoldrick has a better touch and link up play and in this set up that is key, similar to when we had Martin playing passes to Ward and Russell and Bryson running on.

I don't get why people are suggesting Mcgoldrick to play CM in a 433, he is a striker /CF and clearly not a midfielder.
I think it's a myth he is a midfielder. At Sheffield United he played like a number 11 so a 2nd striker next to Billy Sharp, at other teams as far as I'm aware he has played striker, so at a push he could play as a 10 but definitely not a CM with defensive responsibilities like Smith has in our set up.
If Mcgoldrick is going to play either Collins drops to the bench or we play with 2 up top which is unlikely so I think he'll rotate with Collins.

Maybe we could sign him on loan with a view to a permanent pretty much guaranteed for January with a 2mill fee or something to get round the fact we can't pay fees at the moment.
Other than that we wont be signing him.

I quite like the look of that team ?

Smith Stearman Cashin Forsyth
Bird
Knight Hourihanne
Mendez Laing Collins Dobbin
Theory
Smith for Knight, get him into midfield
Forsyth for Roberts, more attacking threat
Don't need 2 holding mids, trust the defence
McGoldrick and Sibley next in line
I think I would go for the same line up as well as I think we need Knight in midfield and would like to see Dobbin given a start.
Would be tempted to start Mcgoldrick over Collins but I'm not sure if he is physically ready yet and also Collins may be badly effected confidence wise being benched now. I think Mcgoldrick offers something different though and what we have seen so far hasn't worked well in attack so changes are needed.

Win on Saturday & it's 10 points from 5 games - automatic promotion form - & we haven't even worked out the best way to play together yet.
Win on Saturday.
That's a big if though isn't it. That's like saying if my business comes good this time next year Rodney we'll be millionaires, with our away record ?
If we score first I think we'll be alright but on what we have seen so far this season we are really lacking in the scoring department.
I think we need another striker of quality +a RB so we can play Knight in midfield as other people have said.
-
The fact that they make Wycombe look like a footballing side to me suggests they arent exactly a Guardiola team ?
I am fully expecting them to be even more direct than a Allardyce team with Kevin Davies up top, I would bring Forsyth in for this one.
-
I'd give Dobbin a start on the left if he is ready and keep Sibley in again.
We will need to rotate some of the front 3 to keep them fresh, we cant drop Shoulders because he's been one of our key players so far and Collins will start again.
Mcgoldrick may get some time of the bench though tomorrow and then maybe start Saturday if he does well.
-
Cashins height is not really a problem anyway imo.
-
Tbf I'm 23 and grew abit at 22 last autumn to around when I turned 23 earlier this year in January.
It is possible if you're a late developer, you can check to see if growth is still possible by having an X ray to see if your growth plates are open. Most people are done at 19 or 20 though.
-
Personally l would I bring on Mcgoldrick for some fresh legs upfront and Thompson on for Hourihane for that extra bit of energy in midfield.

Hourihane put in as good a cross you will see all season. Collins misses from 3 yards out.
Now we concede and maybe regretting that.

Get Inn! 2-0 already

Can’t see McGoldrick as a lone striker…
I think he could do a good job there tbf, he's got the strength and the hold up play and he's a championship player so should handle league 1 no problem.
Think Collins is more of a goal scorer though and I have him down as scoring today.
-
That's a fair enough team selection tbh, could have had Sibley in but as long as he's utilised properly off the bench I'm fine with Smith starting.
Other than that it wasn't really much up for debate, think when Mcgoldrick and Chester are fit it will be interesting to see the team then. I think Chester starts and Mcgoldrick will rotate with Collins and maybe take his place if Collins doesn't play well next few.

I personally didn't really rate Smith in midfield last Saturday and I thought the midfield balance wasn't right until Sibley came one, I don't know how good a right back Smith is but I would either Swap Knight and Smith or bring Sibley in for Smith and go more attacking.
I think we will see Dobbin come on for Barkhausen with 20 minutes to go or so.
-
I thought Roberts was good defensively on Saturday and made 2 key interceptions where his speed and balance where quite key and he has a good reading of the game for a young defender and looks a better out and out defender than Forsyth who doesn't get tight enough imo.
Forsyth is better going forward and can put in some good crosses and has the ability in the air but to me I'd go for Roberts again who looks like a player who as the games go on this season, will get better and better just like Tomori when he was on loan here.
