Wildsmith 7.5 Saved a pen, some good kicks, could have commanded the area a bit better but generally did all that was asked of him, and blameless for the goal.

Chester 6.5 A dip in form.

Davies 6 The goal was mainly his fault, but he's a warrior to battle on and did other good stuff.

Cashin 7.5 Love how very involved in the game he is, doing a mixture of good and bad but more good than bad.

Mendez-Laing 7 Will have done him good to play the full 90. Decent.

Smith 6 Wrong challenge sending the ball to Davies for their goal. OK but need more from him.

Sibley 6.5 Impact waned when put out onto the left wing, and we needed more final ball quality and composure from him. But involved in our good moments.

Bird 6.5 Decent first half but faded and less influence in the second when we needed him to step up

Barkhuizen 5.5 He can't do the defensive side and his attacking moments were generally poor. Needs to be further up the pitch and better on the right.

Forsyth 6 OK but no real impact. I would start him at left wingback though.

Dobbin 6 A couple of bright moments but rarely involved.

McGoldrick 5 Gave away the penalty and didn't do much else.

Osula 6 Not enough involvement or impact.

Hourihane 6 No involvement or impact.

  2. I'm pleased for the Ipswich game there was no mention that Knight wouldn't start until the teamsheets were in with an hour to go. Finally a bit of professionalism at the club in terms of keeping our opponents guessing.

I've just watched the full Ipswich game. It's confirmed to me that Barks can't play left wingback, and shouldn't be asked to. instead we should have NML/Barks vying for the position on the right and Fozzy/Rpberts on the left. Mendez-Laing can't really run after 60 minutes so the obvious thing would be to swap them over with NML getting 60 to try to prove he should start and then Barks getting 35 to try to show he should replace him. Though people on this thread are suggesting Barks is injured and won't start anyway.

It's also clear Davies continues to struggle with injury. He's a warrior, but are we hoping he will somehow play his way back to fitness? Obviously he took quite a knock so this might be too soon for him anyway.

We shouldn't be starting with 2 such inexperienced forwards. We need to ask more of McGoldrick rather than simply bringing him on towards the end.

Presuming Knight, Barkhuizen and Davies miss out...

    Wildsmith

    Stearman     Chester     Cashin

    Mendez-Laing     Sibley     Smith     Bird     Forsyth

    McGoldrick

    Osula

Subs: Loach Oduroh Roberts Thompson Hourihane Dobbin Wheeldon

Lol. If they never play there again it is still where they look best. Roseniorwas trying to make Birdy into a cdm and Knight into a rwb. ?

    and Sibley into a striker.

These three will prove the most balanced and effective midfield we have as the season continues. Look forward to seeing them play together again against Ipswich.

So long as Knight is OK after last night, this looks to be the starting 11. Is Lennie Wheeldon ahead of the likes of Nunn for a place on the bench? Probably academic as I think we'd have either Forsyth or Hourihane there (if Conor is fit). And I think Forsyth is better going forward than Roberts. If Hourihane is fit I reckon the bench will be: Loach, Stearman, Roberts, Forsyth, Smith, Hourihane, McGoldrick

  5. Ten changes from Saturday shows it was our reserves, except we don't have an actual reserve team so one of our problems was that these players aren't used to playing together as a team. In contrast, the Man Citeh U21s train and play together every day. We're being experimental and trying to do different things. They're well drilled and all know their specific way of playing. Pride Park is a Premier League stadium and suited to their way of playing.

The only thing that matters this season is promotion and we're currently cast adrift from three teams at the top. We have the opportunity to get a little closer to one of them on Friday, and that's the only game that matters this week. In the long run, playing no further matches in this silly cup (with three sides of Pride Park closed and a tiny crowd) may prove to be what helps us make it over the line and return to the Championship.

  6. Sibley for his ability to carry the ball forward at pace, his shooting, his inventiveness around the box, his strength, tackling and refusal to be bullied. And his set pieces.

Knight for his duracell engine, determination, tackling and forward drive. Another player who isn't bullied.

The final position is harder to call. It will be Bielik if he returns. These stats don't appear to show it, but if playing one more defensive midfielder (which is how I'd do it) I'd say Smith > Bird/Hourihane if all are fit.

Disappointed this surely mean Louie starts when he played all 104 minutes on Saturday and we surely need him fresh and uninjured in the heart of midfield for Friday.  But pleased he's happy and expect he just wants to play.

Pleased to be proved wrong. With Collins available needing games for fitness, that's a no brainer. Warne must think Smith and McGoldrick also need more minutes for fitness, so we already have a strong spine emerging. Interesting to see Knight starting, but I feel he needs to find his mojo in midfield, and maybe this is the game to do it. He should be dominating League One midfields for the whole game, not just in flashes, but hasn't so far. Great to see all the others get minutes.

Anyway, Louie is "obviously hopeful" of progressing this evening!

  9. Full 90 on Rams TV with pen and paper in hard, annotating the game:

Wildsmith 8 His best performance. Great pen save and put him off for the second. Made himself big when they hit the bar. Claiming more high balls. Kicking better and quicker distribution. And good game management, dropping to the ground when needed.

Chester 8 Absolute standout of the defensive 3. Reminded me of Jagielka.

Davies 6.5 Came into his own towards the end when he was resolute despite not looking fit.

Cashin 7 So involved in the game, all over the pitch. Had chances to score.

Mendez-Laing 7 Great until he runs out of steam. Good contribution but had stopped running and Warne timed taking him off very well.

Knight 6 Didn't especially impact the game

    Smith 6 A good cameo

Dobbin 7 Best game for us. The new management seem to be demanding more of him.

Osula 7.5 Two fantastic goals. Didn't do a lot else, but scored two fantastic goals.

McGoldrick 6.5 Made an impact off the bench, looking cultured and dangerous

Roberts 6 Slow getting into the game after coming on.

Stearman  6 Solid when we needed him to be.

Bird 6 Want him to do more with the ball. Great strike onto the post.

Sibley 9 My first MotM for Louie but in his best position he was utter quality, running with the ball like Gareth Bale time and again, dropping his shoulder and ghosting through the opposition. On the receiving end of two very bad fouls, but has become a man over the summer. And more disciplined. Must start in the heart of midfield.

Barkhuizen 7 Really struggled at wing back, where he is powder puff and doesn't concentrate. But came into the game once further forward and didn't stop running.

Would you also have dropped Collins for stupidly slapping the ground near an opponents head forcing the team to play a man short, or Jason Knight for stupidly trying to run the ball out of defence and losing the ball for the winning goal?

Collins has the punishment of a three-game ban and the fear that he might end up losing his place for longer.

Hourihane simply stuck his arm up to punch the ball away for no reason. Knight was given the ball and had limited options, none of which were good, and tried to get out of a difficult situation. He probably made an understandable but wrong choice. Two situations a million miles away from each other.

It would be truly stupid to have dropped Hourihane just because of the handball. Don't know how many of the games you have watched in full but Sibley has been inconsistent like Hourihane has.

Someone handles the ball for no reason in our own area, not under pressure, to give away the penalty that leads to us losing the game, and you don't think that should lead to being dropped? I can't think of a better reason to be dropped. I would not allow such utter stupidity if I were manager and players would need to see there must be sanctions for losing your head.

Agree about Roberts given a chance in the back 3 and the likes of Fozzy, Thompson and Oduroh need minutes. Would like to see Robinson/Aghatise in ahead of Ibrahim & Lo-Everton being as they were involved at Mansfield and wouldn't be surprised to see McGoldrick to get 45 along with Smith. Expect to see Collins up top given he can play in this game - think I read that in the DET though so ?

I think both Robinson and Aghatise are injured, which is why I went for those other two, but I've not been following the youth very closely so might be wrong. But didn't Robinson come off after 20 minutes against the Gumps, after a tough season injury-wise so far?

I had no idea what rules you were referring to… so I asked Google:

    7 PLAYERS

7.1  In all rounds of the Competition a Player must be a “Registered Player” of his Club. 7.2 For the EFL Clubs, a Registered Player is one who:

7.2.1  would be registered and eligible to participate in a match in the League Competition for that EFL Club commencing at the same time and on the same date as the Match in accordance with the provisions of the Regulations or would have been but for the operation of Regulation 44.9 (Squad Lists) (as amended from time to time); or

7.2.2  would be so eligible but for the fact that they are registered on a Long Term Loan at a club playing in the National League (National Division, North Division or South Division) but by the agreement of the Club, the National League club and the Player he has permission to return to play in this Competition.

7.3  Each EFL Club shall play its Full Available Strength in and during all Matches.

    Guidance

‘Full Available Strength’ means the EFL Club must include at least four Qualifying Players in the ten outfield Players named in the starting eleven on the Team Sheet.

7.4  Qualifying Player means any Player who:

     7.4.1  had started the immediately preceding First Team Fixture (as defined below);

     7.4.2  subsequently starts the immediately following First Team Fixture;

     7.4.3  is in the list of ten Players at the Club with the highest number of starting appearances in First Team Fixtures in the same Season;

7.4.4  has made forty or more starting appearances in First Team Fixtures or international equivalents (and not limited to the same Club or Season); or

7.4.5  is on standard loan from a Premier League Club or any EFL Club operating a Category One Academy.

7.5  First Team Fixture means the League Competition, Premier League, EFL Cup or FA Challenge Cup (but shall, in the context of Rules 7.4.3 and 7.4.4 only, also include this Competition).

7.6  Any EFL Club failing to meet the requirement to play Full Available Strength will be required to pay a fine of up to £5,000.

A reminder of the rules for folk, given we have the vital game at Ipswich three days later. If we can afford it I'd likely take the fine, but if we're not taking the fine and are looking for four qualifying outfield players, I would pick: Stearman, Forsyth, Smith (for fitness) and Roberts giving a team of:

    Loach

    Stearman     Rooney     Roberts

    Oduroh     Thompson   Smith     Ibrahim     Forsyth

    Lo-Everton

    Cybulski

  14. I would have dropped Hourihane for his handball last week, but it didn't matter as finally we got to see Louie Sibley in his best position anyway. I'm so pleased everyone saw it. Play him in midfield every week (a good combo with Bird and Knight as they do complement each other) and we will be promoted. Football's a simple game really.

Very happy for Wildsmith and Osulu too.

Interesting that three U21s who are left-backs, or have played left-back, have gone out on loan in the last 7-10 days. The other two being Demico Burton and Will Grewal-Pollard.

Does "initially" suggest this move is going to be made permanent? Or do you think it might turn into a longer-term loan if everything goes well?

I suppose we already have Fozzy and Roberts at first team level, neither starting as we're playing wingers not full backs. Might that have something to do with these moves?

  16. If playing Warne's system and if Curtis is fit, I would have:

    Wildsmith

    Chester   Davies   Cashin

    Mendez-Laing    Knight   Bird   Hourihane     Barkhuizen

    Sibley

    McGoldrick

Subs: Loach (when's that other keeper fit?), Stearman, Roberts, Forsyth, Smith, Dobbin, Osula

For a better first 11, I'd rather drop Hourihane and play Sibs in midfield, with Osula up top, but then we don't have enough attacking options on the bench.

I was there and saw that. I`ve often thought that the ones we use are far too young and dont really understand whats going on.

For me, we should use the DCFC U14/15/!6s as part of their education in football. It would give them an insight into the pace of the game, the atmosphere to expect and the intensity of the game and crowd.

Again, give them instructions such as "If we are losing, get the ball as quickly as possible", "If we are winning, snails pace"

Agree wholeheartedly. It should be part of the academy function and a prized role where you do everything in your power to assist the first team on the day, while getting used to what it's like down on the pitch in front of a large baying crowd.
