Yes. Lets not forget we have got out of league 1 in double quick time. We could very easily have been doing a Bolton and spending a couple more seasons in it. We are a big club, eventually we will rise but we need to build some foundations for a while. I think we are in for a GSE type period of incremental improvement for a couple of seasons. But there will come a point if we are managed carefully that we become a plum opportunity for an investor

Was he ever a more special talent than Tom Huddlestone, Will Hughes or Giles Barnes? I don't think so personally.

Yes, I think he dislocated his shoulder. Stoke weren't a dirty side in those days, just a normal robust 70's outfit. They were a pretty good team actually, not far short of us. Denis Smith was a tough player. I always fancied Mike Pejic as a player and Alan Hudson would have got into our side no doubt about it, brilliant player

Clough. He spent our money very wisely and very carefully. He was a great manager for us and it was such a shame how he was treated. If he had been allowed to continue and given the backing Mclaren was we would not be in the position we are now

I'd drive him there myself. Well not really but you know what I mean. We can surely do better and need to I think

Be ecstatic if we can get rid of Bradley and replace with better. Imagine he’s earning at the top of whatever we’ve given out the past 2 years and at his best he was ‘ok’ last year. Massively disappointing compared to the expectations. Nowhere near Championship level. If someone is willing to take him for free then I’d happy accept.

Yes of course but my point was that the Brighton's in particular try to get the players before they can be developed and sold on for good fees then loan them out. Anyway, even so its still possible to join the party by building a team that has a mixture of players but in particular some good loans. Having done that though you are faced with the problem of recruiting most of a new team that can then survive in the Premiership. Its harder to stay there than get there.

I agree except for the fact that in recent years we have seen the emergence of recruitment departments at all of the bigger clubs using IT to keep tabs on all emerging talent anywhere and looking to hoover it up. So clubs that develop slowly are always at risk of 1 step forward two steps back

can we have a separate thread for rumours - instead of suggestions (not in media so not worthy of a thread in the transfer section of the forum)?

I don’t want to wade through chatgpt transfer suggestions to see whether any of the usual suspects have heard about anyone being shown around moor farm.

MODs feel free to delete if you think the suggestion thread already does this fine.

I’m heartened that we haven’t dived into transfers so far. A lot of the names linked are not very original or inspiring.
I am hoping for some left field thinking, definitely some youth and pace and a clear direction for the team.

I’ve found it difficult to find good potential loans and frees to recruit for our striking department. Not sure how much we have to spend but can imagine a large % of it will be used on our strike force. I’ve found 4 options which I think would suit our style of play, 2 from Scotland and 2 from Europe. All in a good age bracket and with a range of positives and qualities.

Moussa Sylla (24) at Pau on loan in Ligue 2 from Caen another Ligue 2 side. Plays up front or on the wing and got 16 goals and 7 assists in 37 games. As Caen failed to be promoted from Ligue 2 and Sylla has one year left on his contract I think he could be available on a cheap deal. Fast and creative with good pressing stats. Perfect for a front two or on either wing in a three.

Thelonius (Theo) Bair (24) Suggested him before and still think he suits us perfectly. A 6 foot 4 mobile striker with an eye for goal and good hold up play. 15 goals and 6 assists in his 41 games this season in Scotland. Only a year left on his contract also. Also has 2 Canadian caps with 1 goal. Took him a while to settle in Scotland but once he played to his strengths he’s been unbelievable.

Zan Celar (25) Slovenian international, 6 foot 2 and loves goals. Playing for Lugano he has 51 goals in his 114 games there, with 21 of them coming in 46 games along with 4 assists. He is another with only a year left on his contract. The Swiss league does have some quality and I can’t see how he wouldn’t score goals for us. No idea what fee he would require, he is definitely the most unknown out of the 4 I’ve looked into.

Bojan Miovski (24) Left footed Macedonian who impresses me whenever I see him. Would imagine he’d cost slightly less than Lewis Ferguson who Aberdeen sold to (champions league qualifying) Bologna last season for roughly 1.65 million pounds. He is probably the most expensive option on the list but he would definitely be worth it. He has 26 goals and 4 assists in his 53 Aberdeen games this season with 4 of them being in Europe. That is following last seasons tally of 18 goals and 3 assists in 42 games. He can score with both feet and good in the air standing at 6 foot 3.

I think there are some key differences between now and the GSE era
    1. We had not just come back from near oblivion and having been punished by the EFL with relegation which we then overturned in two seasons. There is a huge level of good will right now
    2. We all know David Clowes is not a billionaire, unlike several of the GSE funders so nobody expects him to lose a big chunk of his family fortune gambling on us
    3. Clowes has made it clear that he is here, and reluctantly because there was no alternative, to stabilise the club and run it sustainably. There is no sense whatsoever of him wanting to get us to the premier league as soon as possible. GSE on the other hand clearly thought that if they chucked some money at it they could get us back into the prem and make a killing. When that didn't work they hauled up the draw bridge and went for a long term option, always with an eye on selling and getting their money back

While it's easy to look at the negative side of things regarding the size of our budget in comparison to other clubs, there are benefits to having a smaller budget.
1 - Focus on developing youth. Clubs with lower budgets tend to have to look to invest heavily in their youth set ups. With our track record of providing first team opportunities to younger players, the club could be an attractive prospect for talented young players in the area. As well as this, young players who develop in-house tend to have stronger loyalties towards the club that developed them. This can help create a stronger sense of togetherness, just look at the impact we've seen in previous years from out younger players.
2 - Effective scouting. As we can't just go out and handpick players, the scouting system is forced to find innovative and smarter ways of identifying talent, perhaps looking to find undervalued markets to exploit. As it will be harder for the scouts they will need to improve their way of doing things, which could help them develop in the long term as well.
3 - Financial stability. As we aren't close to getting promotion from the championship, the club doesn't necessarily need to overspend on trying to get the final piece of the puzzle so to say. We've all heard and seen how DC wants to run the club sustainably, which may have some short term pain on the way to success in the long term. We may not be ready to challenge for promotion from the championship for 5 seasons or more, but when we are back we will be in a better place to succeed.
4 - Player development pathways. This is similar to my first point. A number of teams who have gone up through the leagues have focused on developing players then selling them on for profit. They then invest this profit in more players to develop then sell them on for more profit and continue doing this. We've all seen how many young players have come though our system and now we are in the championship we could demand higher fees. Didn't Bournemouth bid £9 million for Cashin a number of years ago? We have a number of good players to develop in the club, who we could potentially sell on for big money in the future, and then we can invest this in numerous players to develop further.

Joe came to us without a regular first team spot, probably on a modest wage, made the Number One shirt his own and won this season's Golden Glove for League One.
He will be in demand, quite a change for a player who two seasons ago wasn't getting game time.
His stock has never been higher and it's a short career (especially for someone breaking through relatively late). He will be maximising that for the future of his family.
I enjoyed his time here at Derby, he was quite a character, especially when in front of us away fans. I wish him all the best.
