Agree with this. I was frustrated by our inability to slow the tempo of the match down & way we were surrendering possession when they had the ascendancy. Couple of times late on Collins got the ball from a break & tried to flick it on rather than holding it, looking for an easy sideways ball & enabling the team to move up the field. Earlier on in the match, there were a fair amount of 'aerial hooks' to no-one in particular (Hourihane particularly guilty of this) which enabled them to receive possession easily & come back at us.
The team obviously deserve credit for defending with real purpose (especially late on) but the point is it maybe didnt have to be so dramatic if we'd controlled the ball better.

I felt there was definitely a sense of desperation on clearing the ball at times or flicking it on etc when the player had time to bring the ball down and look up.

To improve as a team we need to keep cooler under pressure and stop just clearing up field. It only gives away possession and the next wave starts. That's my view of how to stop the 20min onslaught.

No expectation of teams giving us promotion at all. I’m asking if they just put more effort in or did they change tactically that gave us problems. That’s all. No agenda, just curious why we really struggled to keep any sort of possession for 20 mins. If it was “just their spell”, that’s fine

Every time I try to raise some positivity, I have flashbacks to Tue.
Really was an incredibly flaccid, limp and unenjoyable performance...( Mrs Chester was non-too impressed either 🤣 ).
3 points and a decent performance or I'm seriously getting s**t-faced tonight and sulking for a week.

The encouraging thing was Elder was loads better than he has been.
And it’s inevitable wing backs will every so often be out of position. In a well organised team, others cover

Don't worry, I can take it. It's just an online forum after all - you've not insulted my mother or anything like that.
You will note I haven't suggest 'Warne out' or that we need to go and buy Chris Martin. I'm saying that we have obvious failings in our team and they are the same issues we had last year. Our midfield lacks bite, the ability to out think other teams is not there.
And as for comments on the squad - of course Nyambe, Elder, Nelson and Wilson are good, you would expect them to be. We are one of the big draws in the lower leagues and we should have the ability to attract better players. But they are not better than Knight, Roberts, Davies, McGoldrick, Ebosele or Kazim-Richards. They just aren't.
And that is the point - our manager is here to turn us around, to improve us as a club and he isn't doing that at the moment. And the signings he has been allowed to bring in haven't done that. And he still doesn't see that our midfield is powder puff. And he still doesn't see that Hourihane is a scandal to be an automatic name on that team sheet.
Should he go? No, not now. But if we don't go up this season he should.

    Exactly this!
This thread feels like we’re placing blame on the midfield (admittedly I don’t think bird or Hourihane have been good enough this year) when in reality most of the problem is tactical. We flat out don’t use the midfield effectively.
Warne outright said last night that they’d tried to bypass the midfield. Why after that clearly hadn’t worked all game we decided to throw on 2 more wide players and try it again baffles me.
If it’s not getting the ball up the field outwide quickly, Warne doesn’t have any other ideas.
I don’t recall a single attack going through the centre of the pitch last night.

Being asked to play a system that doesn't suit him? I don't suppose we'll have to worry about Bird for too much longer though.
Remember how good Warne made Knighty look?

We've had good wins and scored good goals, but I'm not sure we've ever looked a 'good side'? It's not like we've stormed up the league. I think the players are dispirited because (like it or not) when Hourihane came over to the fans and said 'we are trying' he was being truthful. The problem is it's not working.

All Hourihane can do is pick out the odd pass every half a dozen games (his set pieces have gone downhill), said this for over a year that considering the level he's played he's not dictating many games. Legs went at Villa. He needs move further forward IMO.
Bird, like Sibley hasn't pushed on and needs a fresh challenge - don't think he's been the same player since his injury. Although sometimes he does show quality. Sell for a million if offered it.
Thompson,  runs around like a headless chicken and gets praised for doing so, genuinely don't get the love fest for him (?) Was fine when he was out injured, which shown he wasn't a major absence.
    Fornah? Wtf happened with him?
We need a box to box midfielder a'la Bryson, someone like Brannagan would've been perfect.

It will help when Nyambe comes back and Wilson can move to RM.
It hasn’t helped that Collins and NML have lost form at the same time.

However the midfield is set up does not excuse walking around the pitch for 60 minutes like last night.
The fastest I saw Hourihane run was when we got a free kick that he wanted to take.

I’ve defender Bird in the past, but my patience has gone. He should be dominating at this level. Instead he’s chasing shadows. Doesn’t contribute enough offensively or defensively. Powder puff. Can’t tackle. Poor. He’ll go in the summer. A lower champ team will take him. He needs to play in a 3 though. Him and Hourihane are getting done every time as a 2.

Other than the lead up to the goal he made a number of key defensive tackles, blocks, clearances in both halves. So while he could have done better for the shot that led to the goal he contributed in keeping the score lower than arguably the team performance deserved and played a part in the rare moments we had going forward.

Wad this something to do with Warne not wanting more than two touches in midfield? I didn't hear this but I've seen it quoted.
@HorsforthRam"A bottom 6 type of performance tonight. I, along with others call for more play through our midfield. At the same time our midfield is slated. As Warne said in his interview tonight, he didn’t want players to take more than two touches in midfield. So the ball either goes back or fired down the channel. I blame Warne and his coaching staff for not training patterns of play that utilise the midfield (I think he said it was complicated in one of his earlier interviews). He’s made the likes of Bird, a talented player look v ordinary at times "

Did anyone notice Bird receive a pass in the last 5 minutes, only to give it straight back to the same player like it was a live hand-grenade?

Hourihane is an ageing midfielder who scores a few and nearly scored tonight
Bird is younger but just as slow and although can be be neat  and tidy he doesn’t score or seem to want to get involved …you can only have one of them in mid for me and it wouldn’t be young max I’m afraid felt for Thommo tonight because I thought he did quite well and has more energy

Bird has been part of a midfield who control games at a higher level than this. Hourihane too but I grant his legs may not move as his brain wants them to anymore.
We’re into our third Warne window. There has been ample time to address it. We are not scratching squads together anymore. We are buying (loaning) players for fees that plenty of clubs we play against week by week couldn’t dream of.
