I think he's the "link" player we've been missing for a little while as a squad. Somebody who drifts between the lines knitting things together, playing quick interchanges to get things going alongside carrying the ball on occasion. One thing that I really like about him that often drives me mad about other players is he actively looks to move into space to give the passer an option.
A note on Shinnie; I think a 433 actually suits him better, it gives him greater license to make runs forwards and also press higher up. That tactical switch alongside bringing in Thompson I think has given us a lot more effective pressing game.

I think the thing that gives us an inkling of hope there are 4 teams who are averaging less than a point per game this season. Meaning the points total required to escape could be very low, it's likely the team who finishes 21st only needs a number in the low 40s.

On point 2 the major difference for me is one of intent; we are trying to play football this season, take the game to people and make things happen. Yeah sometimes we make a bit of a fluff of trying to play our way out of trouble but I can respect that we keep trying to make it work and we are overall getting better at it. It's the same going forwards we don't score enough on paper that's for sure but it doesn't seem like it's from a lack of intent and even then I don't think we are far from finding the right balance to create enough meaningful chances. We are a mismatch of players who are past it, mediocre or at the very start of their career it would be easy to revert to percentage football or meekly accept our doom and yet we haven't and are still trying to do the right things.
For me that's what's entertaining about this season; I can see a team shaping and evolving in spite of the external goings on. It's fun to see Bird really starting to hit his stride this season, Ebosele breaking through to terrorise players, Thompson coming out of nowhere as if he'd been playing in the championship for for 5 years or the likes of Jagielka and Davies pulling out every last trick they can to stop us conceding. The overall spirit of the team is one that is giving it's all and pulling in the same direction. Will it be good enough to get safety this season? Probably not but at least we go down giving our best effort.

There are a lot of fans who are not turning up who might wish to be ‘busting a gut’ too. However, COVID has not been fair to the old - and we do have I would suggest a quite old fan demographic - nor has it been kind to many in terms of income. I think it’s a bit crass to call out fans who in the past have done their bit, but for now have good reason for not being able to attend.

I don't know about you, but this kinda paints a different picture to being stuck in our own half for 90% of the game ?

Touches on the ball also indicates we were outside of our own half a lot more than you're suggesting with our 40% possession

I agree with this, midfield looks a lot more balanced and fluid in how they go about their business. While only a couple of games, we do look better in midfield.

Thompson was brilliant last night his touch, awareness and apparent ease to take the ball in tight areas is incredible for someone so young. Really looking forward to him getting a solid run in the team.
Too early to be dubbed the Derby Xavi/Veratti/Kante you take your pick!

Fantastic point, can't believe we've got 4 points from these last 2 games.
Had to dig in at times second half (esp the passage that ended with Davies' clearance off the line) but thought we deserved a point overall. Played some nice stuff at times first half & Lawrence was a real threat to them. Thought the balance of midfield was really good too...we did expect Fulham to dominate the ball but Bird & Thompson were able to relieve pressure by holding onto the ball or one touch passing out of danger. Knight & Shinnie obviously grafted & Ebosele was there to keep Fulham wary of a burst of pace...hope his injury isn't serious.
Unbelievable backing from our fans tonight by the way...it was non-stop. Absolute class ?

As an aside can I just say where has Thompson come from ? The way he's slotted into the midfield like he has been there all season in 2 of the hardest games of the season is seriously impressive. One of the things that I really really like about him is he's consistently moving to provide the passer an option.
