I like Conway and I'm looking forward to reading his book, like i quite enjoyed reading his articles, but you're right, Ed Dawes got a ton of :poo: for actually trying to get to the bottom of things. I'll never forget his tears on radio derby, they came from a good place.

Agree with some of this, he played a huge part in the building of the completely unjustified hype around Rooney, too.
Not a big fan of the Athletic personally and certainly think Conway got an extraordinary amount of praise for doing…very little. Whereas Ed Dawes got absolute pelters for being one of the first to come out and reveal what was hiding beneath the surface…

I see it now as the right man at the wrong time. How he infiltrated the youth into the squad and our style of play was exactly what Morris and the fans were after and it was taking a very good shape on the pitch before the covid shutdown. I don’t think anyone was expecting play offs that season, but I think the players and the fans were just starting to buy into what Cocu was wanting. Then covid happened and behind the scenes it was falling apart. Reading the post on the Waggy thread it seems that Rooney was dividing the players, our scouting and recruitment was a mess and the finances speak for themselves. That second season everyone’s heads went and it just got worse and worse.

Yeah I’m surprised how little the issues with midfield are discussed tbh. It wasn’t balanced last season and it’s not this season. Hourihane being made captain was a bit of a concern because it near on makes him an ever present which wasnt the best idea last season. Then Smith and Bird, like both of them as footballers (I do like all three tbf), but Bird hasn’t lit up League 1 at all and Smith is very passive. It’s just too much of a muchness and there is no balance, no aggression and you just don’t believe they will win any battles in the middle of the pitch, which means there’s no control of the game…in a stadium with 25,000-30,000 home fans in.

He did nothing of the sort.
It was a mistake of his to decide to go on a long, unstructured & rambling rant where he shared openly every thought in his head at that moment in time.
However, the point he kept coming back to is that it's his responsibility.

I get there is a lot of frustration about and fully understand it was a bit of a daft comment last night but…this is all a bit of an over reaction. Radio Derby have helped and they’ve fuelled the fire of those online.
I thought the main point Warne was getting across that there is players who need to stop turning up to games believing they are better and will automatically win games. Don’t believe the hype. I don’t have an issue with this, to be honest it was something that was needed to be said last year.
with the ‘head turned’ comment, what he’s trying to say isn’t about the players effort but it’s about the backwards and sideways passing and players being safe on the ball. It’s not a conscious effort that a player wants a move, it’s that a player is being safe on the ball as they don’t want to be seen as making mistakes, which then has a detriment to the team and Warne as the manager. Yes it’s not the best way of putting it, but I’m done with making excuses for players too. We all like pretty footballers but it’s nothing if you aren’t using that skill to go out and win games of football.

    Agreed.
Just as there is a difference between saying “a few of our players may have had their heads turned” than saying “Max Bird has had his head turned” or “our best young players have had their head turned” which seems to have become the narrative.

He did include himself in the blame game. Repeatedly. I don't think he was overly harsh on the players, not given the level of performance. Warne held his hand up over the tactics and communication, but ultimately there's only SO much he can do short of pulling on a pair of shorts and subbing himself on.
I'm not defending anyone particularly, I think there's plenty of culpability to go around for last night's performance. We've lost two home games, that's fair enough, and against two of the better sides in the division. Despite their problems, they are still good sides and will be further up the table than down it come the end of the season. However, the manner of those defeats is concerning, particularly last night's. Saturday, it looked like we were a couple of players short, and a few personal errors cost us. Last night, I don't really even know where to begin to explain that. We looked out of it, across the board. The players, the tactics, the communication, the morale, the fitness, everything was off.
Big Trav said the mood "has" been low. I take that to mean before last night's game. I doubt that's just off the back of a home defeat to Wigan, so there's an obvious concern there around exactly why the mood's not great. Must be the first time in a while that's happened - in the relegation season we were galvanized and determined. Last season, we were defiant.
Just hope we can turn it around on Saturday and give Burton six of the best.

I really wanted it to work out with Cocu. Obviously, I want it to work out with every Derby manager but I really thought we were onto something with Cocu, it just felt like we had got ourselves someone a bit special. So sad when that didn't happen, and equally sad to see that Vitesse, who he is now managing, have only achieved the 30% win rate that he got at Derby.
If ifs and buts were apples and nuts eh!
