  1. Over decades better supported teams tend to get their day or two in the sun, mainly because some outside investor, some manager and some players perceive them to have more chance of progress than, say, Accrington.  That's a long way from being an established PL club though.  Getting toward the top half of the Championship is where our sights need to be, and take it from there.

This isn't a Derby County I want to watch. I will of course as we all do but I want to see progressive fast fluid accurate passing by good footballers.

I looked at our passing stats for this season and quite honestly they are appalling.

I'm forever in the debt of David Clowse for saving the club but it looks like he has cocked up with Warne to me. He's looking like a one trick pony.

I agree with this.  Could forgive Clowes anything as our rescuer but was upset at Warne replacing LR.  I did expect to be proved wrong until we reached the Championship when Warne would be found out.  But looking at us and Hull this season is making me feel justified and completely miserable.

  3. I guess that we are likely to remain in sight of the Play-offs for the season and that will potentially keep PW in a job.  But nearly everyone in and outside the club expected us to be in sight of top place all season, and frankly that has already gone IMO.  It is just so disappointing when Warne has had more time and far more resources than most League 1 managers.  Even when it comes to free agents it is possible for him to 'turn heads' as our manager that he could never turn at Rovrum.  He has all the advantages and is giving none of the product.  I was unashamedly a LM fan.  At least this time last year we knew what he was trying to do.

  4. They were better than us in every aspect of the game. They embarrassed us in the first half, second half was better but way below what we expect.  (with thanks to Mr Warne, spelling error corrected)

My thoughts exactly.  But I'm not getting paid a pile to make it any different . . . (corrected the spelling for free).

I don't think we looked dangerous at all. The fact that we had 4 shots on target in the entire game hardly speaks to a menacing attack. I thought Wigan actually contained us quite easily. They were dogged, won their headers in the box and defend the space relatively well, basically inviting us to cross it which we duly did. We struggled to build up a head of steam, and the tempo was desperately slow, which is the opposite of what you want when you're crossing plenty and you need to move the defence about so they struggle to mark your forward line or defend the space well.

We looked more controlled in the second half, before giving away another goal, but we didn't really offer much in terms of chances. Didn't think NML offered anything up today and was almost invisible apart from a single shot 20 yards out. Smith had a mixed game but was better than Bird who had an absolute stinker.

I agree.  One result isn't the end of the world, but where is the pace?  Where is the danger?  I can't imagine many teams, seeing that, will be exactly in fear of us.  I'm very disappointed and not just with the result.

  6. Taking the word 'minimum' seriously - the Play offs.  My expectations though are the top two as currently only Bolton seem to be strengthening of the top teams.  If Barnsley had kept Duff I might have been less confident.

What this survey doesn't invite is any thought about going up strongly enough to stay up.  That seems to be assumed, but until Sunderland last season very few promoted clubs have done at all well in the Championship recently.  Better to go up a season later than go up in a poor state to stay there.

The interesting test is going to be when stability, integrity and progress come into conflict.

In much the same way as you'd hope safety would be the ultimate goal on a hazardous construction project, you'd hope integrity will triumph when tested by circumstances.

Progress is the easiest measuring stick, there's a table, there's wins, there's points but the stability and integrity are what will make the club strong and healthy in the long term. We've all seen the result of binning off stability and integrity in the pursuit of progress and a few of us remember as well the long period of stability under the (granted, maddening at times) GSE/Nigel years.

Stability, integrity and progress don't come into conflict.  The point is that the progress made by wild and/or dishonest policies turns out not to be progress at all.  Stability and integrity can slow down apparent progress.  The quickest way to build a building is not to waste time on foundations.  But . . .

Who says we can't spend a penny? We'd have to operate within a business plan, but it'd be relaxed if we were in the Championship.

So 3 teams? Sure, they'll be towards the top. What about QPR, Rotherham, Plymouth, Ipswich, Huddersfield, Birmingham. Do you really think we can't compete with that?

No, I wouldn't. We still lose £10 million. We are not guaranteed to go up. We are guaranteed however to have lost £10 million revenue. This is not a good thing.

Don't quite follow this.  First of all we didn't really compete with Plymouth and Ipswich this season over 46 games.  Second, the extra Championship money is not free cash.  It has to be used to strengthen the squad - the Championship is famously full of broke clubs in a way League 1 is not.  Staying in this League gives time to strengthen before promotion - so there are real positives as you'll see next season.

And the disallowed goal v Ipswich and not many have mentioned the offside against McGoldrick today when he was clean through 🤔

I get this track on a bitter day.  But without comparing with every other teams' hard-done-by decisions I can't see where this is headed.  I console myself that 7th looked good at the season's start and I doubt we are equipped for promotion for another year even if we made the play-offs.  This season has shown we'll be back.  Have a great summer!

  10. I don't get very encouraged by all this nerdy positional placement of our attendances and stadium size.  Just look at Bradford City.  Their attendances are regularly twice those of any other League 2 club and never get out of it.  Or Sunderland who sort of 'deserve' European football far more than we ever will (and from a small city) but never get near it.

Frustrated upset and angry today leaving the ground, hate losing but hate it even more when the opposition are such bad winners. Ipswich fans and players were complete Bamfords today!! Their arrogance rivals Forest. But all in all while it felt bad at the time, again we fell the wrong side of fine margins today. It was never a 2-0 game.

Ipswich are going up. Wouldn’t be surprised if they won the league. The best side to come to Derby this season. They don’t play the best football but they’re the complete team. They have goal threat, a bit of flair when they need it. Defensively they are excellent and concede very few chances, and at the Dark Arts of time wasting and cheating they are world class. Hope they do go up automatically as if we get them in the playoffs we don’t have enough to beat them. Would probably also say the same about Wednesday.

Regarding Derby, we got beaten up and outplayed in the first 25 minutes when Ipswich had their strongest spell of the game. That being said it was still a counter attack that did us, and an excellent one at that though Smith should’ve cut it out before it got to Chaplin. However we weathered the Storm and finished first half strongly in the last 15-20 mins, it was in this period McGoldrick missed an absolute sitter from a worldie Mendez cross, had to score. We carried that on into the second half and then the disallowed goal, watched it back no way should it have been disallowed, that goal is given and it’s a different game. Then the second goal sucker punch was probably the most disappointing moment of the day. Another counter, good save from Wildsmith but the reaction from the Derby players to the save was horrendous!! He had time to run back, turn with the ball, set himself and shoot, it was as if he was taking a penalty!! Really disappointing.

We deserved to lose, we were beaten by a better team one with far more resources than we have right now, but again we were the wrong side of fine margins and were not that far away. That performance from 25 mins on gets 6 points against Forest Green and MK Dons. Then the table looks different again.

As for where it went wrong today, some are blaming Warne. He at least tried something different, if he stuck with the last 2 games he’d have also been criticised. Right call to drop Hourihane and bring in Rooney. Did moving to wing backs stifle Mendez? Possibly. Understand putting Smith in midfield against Morsy and Luongo but thought Harvey White was the standout player at Peterborough and should’ve kept his place. Max Bird on the other hand carried on his poor performance from Peterborough and had a total stinker of a game. I’m a Max Bird fan but he’s struggled since he came back. Though I thought he spoke brilliantly after the game.

A few players are still off it. Cash and Foz are definitely out of form right now and struggling, Knight was better today but still needs more care with his end product. Mendez in and out but put in some excellent crosses. Shout out however to Collo who I thought was excellent today without much support at times.

Still think we can turn this around. We were beaten by a better team but the performance wasn’t awful, it wasn’t far off from where we needed it to be apart from first half hour. Peterborough and Wycombe were at home to relegation candidates today, couldn’t win. We have a great chance to get 6 points next weekend. Pompey are now the team I’m most concerned about, that game on the 29th looks humongous!!

I like this.  Thanks.  But you may be missing the game plan that Ipswich used.  It was surely to start on the front foot, silence or rile the crowd and then largely use counterattacks against a slower team.  The time-wasting was a deliberate ploy, not because - as some other teams - they were unwilling to go toe to toe with us.  When you say the first goal was 'still a counter attack' it is as if you think it was a below par goal.  In my opinion for league 1 it was brilliant in its pace.  By not noticing the skills of one of the top teams we beat ourselves up unnecessarily.

  12. I was and remain negative about Warne's appointment because of his style of play and its lack of sustainability for the Championship.  That said, I dislike far more the madcap posts on here on a day like today.  We are basically running out of steam because of the restrictions in our situation.  Old boys and young kids are not going to get us promoted while the top of this league is as strong as it currently is.  But that won't be what we have in a season or two's time.  The lack of patience is disastrous for the Club's morale and it needs to change.

Definitely need to get something today as Posh seem to have the easiest run in with only really Ipswich of any note. Don’t fancy Wycombe to get top six so I think it’s two from Rams, Trotters and Posh.

I think we need at least two draws this week and next to stay confident. Two defeats are only two points less but really get in everybody's heads, players and fans.

We might have won 0-4 but for the sending off. Horrible pitch. So not that bad. But personnel changes needed in Jan - some of these players are not at their best trying to play the way he wants. Especially in midfield

Why might we have won 4-0?  We weren't that much better than them and they already looked like scoring.  But I think the post you're replying to was more about the manager's apparent post-game mindset which appeared more disheartened than most of the fans.  He needs to lead the club out of setbacks, not seem like the one most affected by them (even if he is).
