My parents moved up from Abingdon Street to 125 Dairyhouse Road in 1955 when I was 8, cost £3000 I think. Quite posh, big houses. Moved away in 1961 when 75% of neighbours became Asian. Moved up again to Valley Road, Chaddesden where they stayed until 1990 when my Dad moved to his homeland of Alvaston. My Dad was a quarter Gujurati as well, which makes me a quadroon. Must be why I like curry…..

I've just been looking at Dairyhouse Rd on Google Streetview. I couldn't find any strangely painted houses but I think I spotted the house I remembered as being painted. The bricks look as if something has been put on them to strip the paint. Coincidentally, that house is called "The Quadrant". I suppose all this talk of quadrants and quadroons should not be unexpected because this was the Asian quarter of Derby.

I think the house was painted after 1961 when you left the street so you might not remember it.

Dairyhouse Rd looks strange with so many cars parked where there had once been small gardens. In 1998 you could buy a house there for £17,000 but now house prices in the street are well over £200,000. That's a very big jump in a short time.

I don't think these places are really cutting it as a buzzing nightlife for those looking to let loose a bit.

I mean, they're places I'd go for a beer and a bite if I was meeting a mate.  But I'm not sure they cut it for what many of a younger age call a night out, do they?

That's not actually a glowing reference. The best things about Derby

It's alright, it has Rolls Royce, Toyota, it's relatively cheap, it's central, real ale pubs and it's near Nottingham if you want the very things i mentioned?

Derbyshire has the beauty and the hiking that he loves. And beautiful villages. I do love that about Derby, it's location.

A walk down Disco Lane, Talk of the midlands on Mill street, Tiffany's on Babington lane, Clouds on London road, Bailys on Collier street, Discos at the Black Prince on Duckworth Square, The Blue Note on Sadler gate, Just a few we'd visit back in the day, My Grandson does the sound and lighting at the Hairy Dog on Becket Street but this isn't Disco music it's of a different sound 🤷‍♂️

There's not to many in Derby today that the younger ones out there can be let loose 👍👎

I was in the Blessington Carriage last BH weekend ( not my choice and yes it’s still there) and it was rammed full of students as it always . Chatting to a few they like Derby as it’s friendly and chilled , has plenty of small bars and places like the Flowerpot and Hairy dog for bands etc. For a “big night out they go to Sheffield as it’s a similar vibe just more places to go. When I said Nottingham they said unless a band was on at Rock City they don’t go as find it intimidating , full of nob heads looking for  a fight . I worked in and around Notts for 20 odd years selling building materials and it has some nice surrounding areas but places like the Meadow’s , Hyson Green etc are far more of a S hole than any part of Derby . I take it you haven’t been to Derby for a while , if you stay away from the Derbion there is plenty to see and do  lots of investment going on. The old Ranbys being redeveloped , The Guildhall and indoor market place up graded. Museum of making , Electric Daisy Garden that has a bar at the bottom of Sadler Gate . A lot of good buildings still stand you just have to look up to see them above the shop fronts .
Young peoples night life not my thing anymore but a lot of the old bars and clubs like the Blue note are still there  .

Come across sometime and have a beer be happy to show you around.  , don’t stay in Notts too long or you might start growing that 6th finger 😉

Notts definitely has some horrible parts that make any part of Derby look like Kensington.

I worked in Hyson Green for 2 weeks.

On day 1 I saw a gun. On day 5 my vehicle was damaged. On day 10 I went to get tools and somebody did a magic spell on me.

I think Notts nicer areas are better than Derby nice areas. I think Notts makes more effort to draw people in. It always seems to have something going on. There seems to always be choice in Notts.

Derbyshire though is something else. It's ridiculous where you end up if you drive 10 minutes from Derby City. I love Derbyshire.

My main issue with Derby isn't what it has/hasn't got. It's what the council do or don't do. The way they waste money and potential. They make zero effort to attract families and tourists. Maybe Notts benefits from having a huge central square. All I see Derby do is a few stalls and a Xmas tree near that awful waterfall and yet another abandoned wreck (Assembly Rooms). Yet Notts council are broke? Worse off? But still they find ways to bring people and events in.

Maybe as @Reggie Greenwoodkind of said, I guess young people are changing the way they socialise. A night out used to be too loud music, meeting people, trendy over priced bars and clubs that charge you entry fee after a 25 minute wait in the cold.

Last time I went out in Derby, we were looking for something like a club and somehow ended up in Popworld.... You know when you do the trying not to look like you're a terrorist behaviour at airport security? I was very conscious of trying not to look like a predator hanging around a bunch on 18 year old girls. Oh God. I feel awkward just thinking about it

I know what you mean Alph, Try going down Munday Play Centre on Markenton Park  in the summer as a Senior Citizen 😬, Last year the looks of "WTF are you doing here" 😁🙄 well I took all the photos I needed and left 😉

Places are open in our City until stupid o'clock...4am I'm on my 4th wet dream by then 😂, As Reggie has intimated...us mature 😉 types like a quiet drink, A chat or bite to eat then get home to a nice drink of Horlicks or hot Chocolate 😁

I worked in St Anns for some property developers from Derby. They would often live in the places they'd be doing up.

Remember we turned up and said to her "Why have you bought one here?! It's a bit of a change Borrowash, Draycott and Thulston"

She said they've never had any trouble. Not seen anything. It's pretty quiet actually. They expected the worst but it's been pleasant so far.

Well actually, she said, there was one thing on the first night. A man burst through the front door, ran through the living room, out the back door and over the fence at the back. Then seconds later some police officers did the same. All while they were sat eating on the deck chairs.

But that was 12 months ago. Nothing since.

See, even in the roughest parts there's a community spirit where nobody locks their doors

My mate lived in St Annes on Bath Street just off St Annes Wells Rd, He was burgled when he was on the lash one night, He wasn't insured...he was gutted, The week after some one broke in again and put all the stuff back...yes there is a community spirit 😁

🤣 Remember in Derby we had that gang in Allenton and Sinfin with their postcode wars?

I'm adding gang warfare to something else Notts does better. More gangs, more weapons, more choice.

Yes I remember it well, 14 year old lad blasted with a shotgun, He went to Chellaston school, I lived a 5 minute walk from the park where it happened, A few months later another murder on Donnington road at a party at the back of where I lived.

This was a time of the BCT/YBCT and the A1 gangs...all done because of the internet and disrespect 🙄

Just to add...it was Sunnyhill not Sinfin...Browning Circle

Hairy Dog? 🤷‍♂️

Electric Daisy Garden? 🤷‍♂️

Popworld?  🤷‍♂️

All nigh on my doorstep (20min walk into town), and I've never heard of them! 😲

It seems I just can't keep pace with all these Derby City improvements!   🤣

... Anyway... Have they finished the flyover at Markeaton Island yet?  👀

Sunnyhill, of course. I should know I used to live 5 mins from Browning Circle.

I'm guessing these gangs are gone?

Hair Dog is the old Flamingo & Firkin pub on Beckett St. They put bands on and is generally an alternative vibe

Electric Daisy Garden is a lovely plot that they have established at the bottom of Sadler Gate on the site of the (now demolished) Princes Supermarket. It's a hippy-ish green endeavour - an actual city garden with lots of plants/fruit/veg being grown and food trucks / bar

Popworld is a terrible chain night club in the old Friary on Friargate (used to be It's A Scream)

See also Dubrek - a community venue/rehearsal room/bar/recording studio on Bridge Street in one of the old Uni  bars. Absolutely thriving

And of course the Bustler Market is now well established in the old Chocolate Factory on John Street

At Xmas they had a brilliant Nordic Ski Lodge set up on the Market Place too

So much amazing new stuff going on in Derby if people only bother to engage
