Wildsmith 5.5 Had Jack to do but had a rush of blood when he left his box & failed to get the ball almost conceding from the striker’s lob.

Hourihane 7 Busy and some nicely executed passes.

Chester 6.5 Neat & effective on his return.

Forsyth 6 15 minute leg stretch

Cashin 7.5 Pumped the diagonal to NML after 23 seconds for the cross that led to the peno. Solid and none got by.

Collins 5.5 Calmly hit the peno. Lots of energy & some good linking play. Could’ve had a second but denied by the gk.

Bird 🦅 6 Late sub to see the game out.

McGoldrick 8 Grace & danger whenever he is on the ball. Earned the goal by pressing in the latter stages.

Mendez-Laing 7 Great cross on a stretch to win the pen. Some good delivery but often to space.

Dobbin 6 Late entry to freshen it up.

Smith 4.5 Too many mis-placed passes.

Roberts 7.5 Always looked to pick a pass & play forward.

Davies 6 Late sub for legs

Sibley 5 Didn’t have enough impact.

Barkhuizen 6 Late legs.

Knight 6,5 No protection from a bland referee and got frustrated.

2 goals, 3 points & a clean sheet. A bobbly pitch and a small ground made it a hazard that was safely negotiated. Horrible to watch; it’s not an exaggeration to say you’ll see better football walking your dog in the park but it was a must win given the way the other results eventuated. Another must win Monday v Milton Keynes.

Wildsmith 6 (got away with one in the first half and kicking a shade off his usual standard)
Hourihane 6.5 (looked livelier, worked hard; delivery quality still hit-and-miss)
Chester 7.5 (very solid and his experience showed every single time he whipped the ball off the FGR winger, which was 100% of the time!)
Forsyth 6
Cashin 7 (much better than recent weeks: more solid and better distribution)
Collins 6.5 (always puts a shift in and this was a decent enough performance)
Bird 6
McGoldrick 7 (some audacious flicks and worked hard-and-smart to get his goal; still not convinced that his technical gifts exhibition results frequently enough in a purpose/outcome but when it comes off his skill on the ball is a joy to behold)
Mendez-Laing 6.5 (looked more dangerous than in recent weeks but still lacking end product, albeit assisted FGR defender for the penalty)
Dobbin 6
Smith 6 (not as good as vs. Ipswich but did his job)
Roberts 7 (yet another strong performance from him)
Davies 6
Sibley 6 (relatively quiet but did fine)
Barkhuizen 6
Knight 7 (put in a good shift; needs to work on his goal threat - perhaps could have scored from a header)

Ref 8

Ref on the whole was OK but surely Cooper had to see red for blatantly pulling down Collins (denial of a goal-scoring opportunity). These unwritten customs whereby you can't send someone off because you've already given a penalty (for something else!) and/or it's early in the game...

...or maybe, judging by the second goal, the ref did us a favour by keeping Cooper on the pitch!
