Points required to extend our season

Looking at the last 10 seasons in the Championship, finishing 6th to secure a play off place as varied from 80 points last season to as low as 68 points 5 seasons ago. With the average over the 10 seasons coming out at 73.6 points. I reckon it will be high again this season and to get 6th spot will be around 78 points. Can the Rams find 16 points in the next 9 games, in the previous 9 games we only mustered 9 points.

Cardiff (h) WIN, why because no team in the championship have won 7 games on bounce and Warnock does'nt have Ralls or Bryson fit and we are due some luck and a win.

Sunderland (h) WIN, they have gone and there for the taking.

Preston (a) LOST, home form too good for us.

Bolton (h) WIN, Their away form is pants

Wolves (a) LOST, Best side in the Division and will be too good for us.

Burton (h) WIN, The Brewers have been leaking goals all season.

Middlesboro (h) DRAW, Pullis as now got them performing and will be well drilled in not to lose against teams around the top of the table.

Aston Villa (a) LOST, Only lost 1 game at home all season, so i can't see us being good enough to steal anything from this match.

Barnsley (h) WIN, We will be too strong for the Tykes in this last fixture, even if there is anything or something to play for(for both teams).

That give us a total of 16 points, perhaps i am being optimistic by predicting only one draw in the next 9 games, having had 6 in our previous 9.

76 points should do it, this would leave the chasing pack having to win 6 of their final 9 games to pass us.

So that's 13 more points from 9?

But the 9 include a couple of away games I'm not confident of so I'd say it boils down to 13 in 7.

Nearly 2 points a game in those matches - we've not hit those heights for some while so now's the time.

I've some bad news for you... it's 14 from 9, not 13 from 9.

I think 75 points will be enough, which would be a pretty average run in for us so I’d hope for more!

Middlesbrough will probably finish above us with the form they’re on.

Sheffield United still have to play 5 teams in the top 10.

Bristol City haven’t got a bad run in but 6 wins out of 9 would be required for 76 points. Anything less than that and our goal difference is as good as an extra point (currently!).

Preston probably have the best run in, a minimum of a draw against them and I’d be confident.

Millwall would need 7 wins in 9 against Bristol City, Sheffield United, Fulham, Middlesbrough and Villa! I’m pretty confident they can be ruled out!

3rd - Fulham

4th - Villa

5th - Middlesbrough

6th - Derby

I daren’t predict any further than that...

We have 4 easy games Burton, Bolton, Sunderland and Barnsley. We should get 12 points from them and 3/4 from the other more difficult fixtures. That will be enough for 6 th. if we aren’t good enough to get those points we obviously won’t be good enough for the play offs anyway. I fully expect us to get 6th

So assuming for a moment we get nowt from wolves and villa away,  it's 14 from 7.

A real challenge is that.

Yes it's possible of course but some significant improvement over our last couple of months is needed.

Why assume will we get nothing from wolves and villa away?

Considering how we've played against the likes of Wednesday, Norwich, Reading etc.. are the 4 fixtures against the 4 near the bottom certain wins?!

I think come this weekend there will only be GD keeping us in the PO, I'm hopeful after we've got Cardiff out the way we can start to pick up some points.

Just an assumption. Seems likelier than other possible outcomes but by no means certain.

Others assume burton Barnsley Sunderland Bolton are easier and we can bank 3 points from each of them. Seems plausible but losing points quite possible.

One fact only is that we need to get more points than we have from the last 9 games.

One other boring factoid looking at the table now.

Just based on points differences we seem to be more likely to finish 9th than catch the team in 4th

If you're going to assume defeats at Wolves & Villa then others will assume wins v Sunderland, Bolton, Burton & Barnsley.

Let's then assume 2 draws and a defeat from Cardiff, Preston & Boro and we've hit the 76 points.

It's all to play for.

The difference then is that we've achieved 2 defeats in our last 9,  but not 4 wins. And one of those defeats was not against a top 6 in form side.

So others are assuming a considerable turnaround in our form and I'm assuming that we continue broadly as we have been.

Which is more likely?  We shall see.

The games against Burton, Sunderland, Bolton and Barnsley really need to be wins. I will not be suprised if we draw at least 2 of them games, because after all we are the draw specialists this season. The other 5 games I will be happy with 8 points. I think we need 15 to 18 more points to make playoffs comfortably.

If we can’t get enough points with the run in we have then we simply won’t deserve to be in the play offs.

The worry would then be that whoever we get in the play offs will be a decent team, I’m not sure I would fancy us against Fulham, Villa, Boro or even Sheffield United if they get in there,  over two legs..

Although I would take Fulham in the semi final and Boro at Wembley right now..!

I do not really believe in such things - but I had a mini premonition last night - in it.....

we finish 6th and lost to wolves in the play-off semis

The only reason I put it up here is because Wolves not getting auto promotion is definately not in my conscious thoughts

Small point but the Burton game is away, not home.
