Why is he taking any notice of the fans and their views??

Would Brian clough have given a monkeys about what we tbought?....he told us how to think!

Gr is the manager, paid to manage, not sit reading these forums and getting all sensitive.

These questions get peppered at him in interviews! This February ‘curse’ is tedious.

The "improvements" were so marginal year on year that they probably weren't even that and just random noise from season to season as to our league position with no actual discernable pattern.

I would think a business growing too quickly is an acceptable problem for a chairman that they would be happy to be presented with you make it out as some kind of issue.

We definitely improved year on year under NC and the squad he left behind was far better than the one he inherited . But it was slowly slowly catchee monkey. Too slowly.

The thing about change is that is inevitable. It’s how you adapt to that change that is the key. Under Billy, we never adapted well enough, under Clough (who I was, and still am a big fan) the change was so small no adaptation was required. Under Rowett, we can all see the change. It appears the players have adapted, but maybe a core of the fans have not.

If we don’t go up this year - the ability of the fans to adapt to a new style next season will be key. If we do go up - the ability of Rowett and the team to adapt will be.

The problem is - fans don’t want change - they just want things to get better. ???

Of course everyone would want to finish as high up as possible but I don't get the desperation and outrage for it to be 'this season' every year.

It's "the weakest championship" every year. And it's always "stronger next season"

The best you're going to see up there will be midtable, a dozen wins and scoring as many as you concede.

Yeah, I actually want to get there but the whole aaaaarrrrrgh we need promotion otherwise we have failed as a club and my life can't go on if we have to play Ipswich next season!!! thing baffles me a bit.

I just want Derby to win and play well. I don't really care who we are playing. That keeps me happy. It also leads to the PL if done often enough.

But the idea that anything outside the PL is sort of a chore. There's great games in this division. Big rivalries, unpredictable seasons, great away days, winning runs. Everything that can be enjoyed in the PL you can get here. Why don't people just enjoy this? Enjoy battling at the top of the league. It's not going to be that much fun up there once the novelty of more mentions on TV wears off.

The attitude towards Championship football is odd. Enjoy it.

There's another thread somewhere about how great Rowett is. How good the team is. I said then that wait to see if we falter and it'll be interesting if he goes from Messiah to clueless clown in the space of 90 minutes. If he gets the full McClaren meltdown. I had hoped not but I think he will.

It seems to me there are some now waiting for things to go wrong so they can throw a wobbler.

Never been a big Rowett fan. But I think it's madness that anyone can even begin to consider this season a failure if we don't get promoted.

It wasn't a failure under McClaren.

These are exciting seasons to be part of. Promotion races!! Play off battles!

But no. No, that's failure.

Success is now being a minor irritation to the big Manchester and London clubs. It's winning 1 game in 3. That, that is the only place in football that matters. It's the only fun you can have. And we need to get there this season or nobody will ever get promoted again.

I get the stress and excitement and disappointment involved. Just not so much the social media meltdown. I guess that's just how people are when behind a keyboard. Not just football I suppose

As for the matchday atmosphere. Most clubs have the same arrogant attitude towards the football league. Most sets of fans see past the league they're in as they're hypnotized by Souness mahogany skin, Redknapp's designer suit and a giant iPad. Gary and Alan sat on a sofa telling you stuff that you're too zombified to realise you already knew. Transfer deadline day making the £40m capture of Pierre Dong Long an event by constantly referring to a goal he scored against Lille. There's so much ********. Wait until We're there and as soon as the novelty wears off seasons like this won't seem quite as horrific.

Enjoy it.

Interesting stuff Alpha and I agree in many ways. My issue is that not living local my kids only 'see' the Premier League...they want to be like all.tje other kids and support a Chelsea, a City... at least with a promotion  I could take them to see 'their' side Derby play against them...saying we're 'not in that league' is a tough argument to win. It's becoming a 'would I rather' they just didnt get into football at all or support a team other than Derby!! Dilemma

Spot on Alpha. But isn't he a French porn star? I too would like us to get promoted but agree that's not the be all and end all.

Not a popular view on here maybe, but I'd like us to just tackle each and every game as the most important. It has frustrated me when we have seemed to sacrifice cup games by playing a weaker squad because 'the leagues more important'. I liked Mac and enjoyed the style of football he wanted the team to play (not always successfully obviously) but he chose this tactic too in the replay last year. I don't get it as our best chance of a 'top title' is the league or FA Cup.

Now I have to disagree with this bit. We don't get Jim b****y White telling us how "massive" every weekend is in the championship.

I quite like that

All depends on how and what an individual views as success.

turn up week after week year after year and see your team compete for what could be viewed as the ultimate prize in football to play in the English premier league, and to be in the running all season long and fall at the final hurdle but along the way you have a certain degree of excitement,

or

We arrive in the English premier league full of excitement and expectations draw the opening game and then get stuffed in the next 39 games, spend a miserable season watching us score a handful of goals and pick up a few points here and there but at least we get to see some of the best players in the world.

because we have such an old squad we need to make massive changes, so that involves spending all of the cash injection that we receive through promotion and playing in the perceived best league in the world and we borrow against parachute payments that will follow as it’s clear Mel isn’t going to fork out £100 million of his hard earned cash on a whim.

we then end up back in this league with a high wage bill and in need of a manager to reduce it and trim down the squad.

i think we all want the dream but we have to settle for reality.

Success is short lived and dreams are often broken, enjoy it for what it is.

we had our time in the sunshine in the 70s when football was a more even playing field, now it’s all about how much you spend, not how good the manager is, money buys success !

As usual, far more coherently put than my original post but captures much of the essence!

Supporting a team is about what you give to it, not what you get. I'll give my time, money and love to derby county regardless, and its great when the team wins lots and is successful in return but i don't have a condition on it, i don't expect equal and opposite reaction from the club/team. Clubs know this, that's how they get away with exploiting fans, that's why its a nice thing that under Mel its at least recognised.

But aside from going off on one there, hope for best this season and every season.

Depends what you consider failure as, ultimately SM failed by not delivering promotion however it could be argued served up entertaining football which resulted in fans enjoying the football.

GR stated he didn’t want over the hill PL players and talked about building an ethos more akin to what Derby fans are used to.  What he iwas delivering is boring effective football that resulted in us being in the top 2, take away the effective bit and you end up with fans not enjoying the football, in addition to a team that no longer has the type of player to provide that excitement, or our best prospect the youth set up has provided for years.

So for me it would be classed as failure, I’d happily take the type of football associated to SM, Burley, Smith and the likes without being in the PL, however I doubt I’ll be excited pre season with a team full of failed ex PL players playing GRs brand of football.
