New penalty shootout rule

Uefa has trialled a new penalty shootout system for the first time in a competitive game.

The system - similar to the tie-break in tennis - was used during the European Women's Under-17 semi-final between Germany and Norway on Thursday.

Germany missed their first three penalties but still beat Norway 3-2 to reach the final of the tournament in the Czech Republic.

The sport's European governing body is seeking to make shootouts fairer.

The new system is also being trialled at the men's under-17 tournament in Croatia, which has not yet reached the knockout stage.

What makes the perfect World Cup shootout penalty?

How does it work?

As the current system stands, teams take turns in a shootout, with the choice of who goes first decided by a coin toss.

For example, team A goes first, then team B, then team A again.

The new system is called 'ABBA' and sees team A followed by team B - before team B goes again. Team A would then get two successive penalties, and so on until there is a winner.

A coin will still be tossed to decide who goes first.

Why is a change needed?

The idea is to stop the team going second having to always, potentially, play catch-up. The sport's rule-making body, Ifab, approved the trial after looking at the research that says the team taking the first penalty have an unfair advantage as they win 60% of shootouts.

"The hypothesis is that the player taking the second kick in the pair is under greater mental pressure," said Uefa.

They still have to take 5 kicks each whatever the system.....

If it ain't broke.....

What puzzles me they want to play around with this, but are frightened to mic refs up like in other sports..... they'll get the respect then off players..... instead of messing with daft ideas like this.

Not convinced by the change. The game is for the fans and they love the drama and the pressure. Pressure is what the players get millions for, like any other well-paid profession.

If you're looking for a change in rules, what about replacing ridiculous throw-ins (rules about behind the head etc seem to be ignored) with drop-kicks?

Kicking the ball seems to be quite key in football so why have a set piece where you use your hands?

I like this new ABBA approach, does it mean the winner takes it all?

Scrap shoot outs and 2 x 15min extra time.  Just play until someone scores, regardless how long/short it takes, after 90 mins, if tied.

Or who has the least bookings wins.

Crazy idea...did you not go to Derby vs Burton? We would still be there now.

This. Keep it simple.

Changing it for 60%?!

And still a team will win the toss and go first.

Penalty shoot outs don't need to be fair. They're a last resort if teams can't be separated by actually playing football. No changes should ever be made to incentivise playing for penalties. The fetishisation of penalty shoot outs says an awful lot about where the modern game is heading. Fewer and fewer people have the attention span required to sit through an entire game and football is increasingly consumed in short clips via mobile phones and social media. In this climate it makes perfect sense that 5 minutes of high drama is exalted over the preceding 120 minutes. The Corinthians will be spinning in their graves.

In womens football if the game is a draw, then the match could be decided by lining up the five best penalty takers and just deciding who has got the best legs.

alternatively extra time could be played in stilettoes.

it wouldn't really translate to the men's game.

Let the team that scores first in actual play go first, simple really

I like this idea, but what if it's 0-0?

You might as well just flip a coin and dispense with the shoot out to be honest.

Having said that, if you win the toss don't you get to either go first, or decide which end your shooting in. This new idea takes away the very slight (10%) advantage of going first, but not the probablybfar greater advantage of shooting towards you're own fans. So it means if you win the toss, you know there's not much advantage to going first now, so I will choose to gonsecond and shoot towards my own fans. Somits still not completely fair.
