Derby v Ipswich

Here's my twopennyworth on the game. It took me four and a half hours to get there due to the nasty accident on the M1. Couple of pints in the Brunswick and we went to the game feeling less than confident.

A decent first half I thought but every loose ball appeared to fall to an opposition player so our luck wasn't in.

Will Hughes ran the show as others said. In fact our whole midfield played pretty well.

Now I can't admit to being all that savvy when it comes to tactics as I don't play football myself and only watch Derby. However, I can't see the difference between how we 'used' to play and how Pearson is trying to play (except for the fact it is now a lot less entertaining and we no longer score those things called 'goals').

What did strike me though is the number of times that Vydra kept trying to jump to reach balls that went just over his head. If only we had a big target man, he would have had those. I think there is a guy on loan at Fulham who might do the job.

Anyway we all know how it ended. Ipswich had one shot which went in and most of us probably knew then that it was over.  I logged into my online William Hill account, withdrew my winnings for a 1-0 Ipswich win and got home at 1.00am. Playing Ipswich at home really is free money. That was also the smallest crowd I've seen for a league game for some time so maybe the crowd are starting to vote with their feet.

Oh and one more thing. Ipswich were truly terrible and McCarthy said they had "mugged" us. After the Carlos Edwards late late winner a couple of years back, he said 'Derby have been "burgled". It really is about time someone arrested that man.

He put several passes out of play in the second half. To suggest he is a good passer is incorrect. he is a solid, honest stopper.

I didn't say he was a necessarily a good passer. Just that I couldn't remember him giving the ball away on too many occasions. Certainly less than Shackell from what I've seen of him this season.

Pearce had a 64.5% pass accuracy last night, only Bent and Carson had a worse percentage.

I'm very surprised by that. Would clearances and defensive headers going to the opposition count as inaccurate passes?

One thing that strikes me about Derby.

Two Ipswich players got booked in fairly quick succession last night. I like to see 11 v 11, but in my mind, we should be putting further pressure on them. Make them make that mistake that earns a player an early bath.

We never do that. Maybe that's part of the lack of spine, or a lack of guile. Maybe we're just too nice?

First Half.

Decent pop from Vydra early on that their keeper had to get down to his right for. Regulation save really.

Effort from Bryson from outside the box straight at the keeper.

Shot from Wilson from 25 yards which was bread and butter stop waist height to his left.

Keeper tested once.

Second Half.

Blackman shot at the final whistle. Should have made sure of that one, but managed to hit the keeper/defender.

Keeper tested once.

All the shots wide, and blocked, and crosses that bobbled around a bit in the box are irrelevant. We haven't got 1 goal all season through bad luck, we're not doing the business. Not enough presence in there yesterday.

They tested Carson once and he failed. He'd be dropped for Mitchell on Saturday for me.

Have to say, Varney worked his socks off up front 2nd half, won numerous headers and closed down and harried well. Where as our front line lost nearly every header going.

Unless my eyes deceived me, Wilson even failed to win a header when there was no opposition defender within 15 yards of him...

Agree about the finishing. Both second halves against Grimsby and Carlisle especially we had lots of shots at goal but barely got one on target or really had the keepers earning their money. If we are struggling to score when having lots of shots at goal then when we aren't having lots of shots then it's even more likely we'll be firing blanks. Needs sorting as we all know.
