The Squad:

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Cardiff City), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Southampton), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Toronto FC), Rickie Lambert (Southampton), Jay Rodriguez (Southampton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Biggest talking points: Luke Shaw and Jermain Defoe's inclusion. Barkley, Sterling and Rodriguez also picked.

Thoughts on the squad? I'm a bit p*ssed off that Cleverley's been included again especially over Tom Huddlestone, who's had an extremely good season at Hull so far this year or Gareth Barry who's also been playing very well at Everton.

Also, pick your own squad here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup/10497297/World-Cup-2014-England-Squad-Selector-pick-your-23-then-compare-to-our-choices.html

Agree, seems like Cleverly gets picked just for playing for United... been very poor this season. Sidwell would have been a decent addition in there too, he's been a shining light in a very poor Fulham side.

Also, interesting to see that four keepers have been picked, thought only 3 were normally selected?

Kind of surprised Defoe has been picked... getting on now and will be playing in a relatively uncompetitive league compared to the prem. Considering this is the provisional world cup squad, I'd have preferred to see someone like Vokes in the squad.... i.e. an up and coming talent.

That's a decent team, just really wish Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey were English.

No idea how Cleverley has wrangled his way in, been a lot better performers than him, just at less glamorous clubs, Huddlestone for one.

Also, Smalling...

Not sure what Defoe is doing there either.

Why is it a bold choice like Shaw always has to be balanced out by players clearly only be picked for the stature of their club?
